Deadspin: (Notre Dame football player) Manti Te’o’s Dead Girlfriend is a hoax

Not running a news story until you vet your sources before running a news story is a different thing. ESPN with all their power and resources got outscooped by a blog site. That in itself is embarrassing, but nothing new. Look how often Jay Glazer clowns ESPN's "insiders". But it means they've gotten lazy, not that they are actively trying to cover this story up.

ESPN is more than happy to start reporting on stories once they've been broken; they're not stupid and know how to chase after money and ratings.

They just don't want to be known as the place that's breaking these stories. As the nation's biggest sports broadcaster, the last thing ESPN wants is to get a reputation among the major sports leagues as a hard-hitting, muckraking news outlet. ESPN has no reason to try to outscoop Yahoo Sports and Deadspin.

They have their hands in far too many cookie jars to be considered impartial.

How so? I mean, are people actually pissed over this?

He was second in the Heisman vote and I heard one voter on ESPN radio go on record saying they voted for him because of his story about his grandma and girlfriend dieing and using it as motivation to win games, he said if he could take his vote back he would.

The only explanation for that is that Teo was lying to his family the whole time. No way does him being hoaxed explain why he would tell his family that he had met her in Hawaii.

I can understand parents not understanding "online relationships" or whatever and kids lying to parents about their relationships. I don't however understand how you could consider someone your girlfriend without ever meeting them.

I mean hell, we've been sad when Gaffers we've never met died. But none of us considered them our significant others.

OK. That makes sense.

Do people think that that was the motive for his deceit? I guess until he explains it all, it's reasonable for people to assume so (whether it is or isn't true).

EDIT: Maybe he tried to kill two birds with one stone? Continue lying so as not to be embarrassed, and then parlay the hoax into Heisman hopes.

If anything I would just say, "some girl I'm talking to."

the Heisman trophy is very much a popularity contest. This story gave him a ton of air time and publicity, without it its hard to say he would have been voted so high. Ask any college football fan who isn't a domer who the best player in the nation is. If they say Te'o they're full of shit. (Jarvis Jones from Georgia is a better LB without a doubt). I watched 5 or 6 ND games this year (Mich, Mich st, Pitt, Stanford, Alabama at least) and I have no interest in ND. I'm just a college football fan and enjoy the games.

A lot of the confusion as to why this is a big deal comes from people who don't follow college football

You are confusing one commentators opinion (Wilbon in the case of the Sean Taylor thing) with espn's news dept as a whole. Stephen A. has been ripping Teo left and right so how would you explain that? They are commentators paid for their opinions. If they jump to conclusions or say something stupid they have to answer for it themselves (see Rob Parker) and ESPN can distance themselves from it. To be fair Glazer works for Fox Sports, not some podunk blog. Although I agree ESPN is very lazy/complacent in their reporting. That can happen when you are at the top.

ESPN doesn't want to be known as the outlet digging up dirt on people and players from big-name sports institutions because they've got a financial interest in maintaining friendly relationships with them.

ESPN is inevitably going to try to steal NBC's broadcast rights for Notre Dame football, so they don't want to be going out of their way to piss them off.

How is this possible? Don't you mean buy?

I was being completely facetious when I asked why. I already know why. Two words. Notre Dame.

If it had been any other school ESPN would have jumped all over this story at the first sign of trouble and I can say with complete sincerity that if another outlet hadn't dropped the story first ESPN never would have touched it.

There's way, way too much money wrapped up in ND football to define their (almost) dream season with this scandal.

We wont know until he finally talks, but if he had won the Heisman because of this, the story would be a bigger shit storm. I doubt he would have to return it though because technically the Heisman is for achievement on the field and personal stuff should not be considered in the vote.

So....ummmm, Mr. Fake-O auditioned for "The Voice"

But this is not the first sad story Tuiasosopo has reportedly engineered. A source tells Us Weekly that the aspiring singer spun quite a tale for the producers of NBC's The Voice, too -- when he auditioned to be a contestant on the upcoming season.

"He had this insane sob story before [he sang]," an insider reveals to Us. "It would make for great TV."

According to the source, Tuiasosopo told producers he and his cousins started a Christian band together and were on their way to perform at a youth conference in Nevada when they got into a "massive" car accident. He claimed a truck crashed into their vehicle, sending them flip-flopping all over the freeway. He also said doctors thought one of them might have been brain-dead, but miraculously, everyone was fine.

Personal stuff is apart of it. It says it within the Heisman statement. It's just that the majority is what you do on the field.

Manti, VINDICATION!!!!! Any apologies coming from the media hacks and the deadspin hacks who ripped this great young man limb from limb? Hahaha yeah right. Fuck those assholes. Fuck you Screaming A smith, Fuck you Mike Greenberg, Fuck you Deadspin hacks, Fuck you MSNBC,Fuck you Fox News , and Fuck you Anderson Cooper. Haters to the left

So what you're saying is you support your University graduating a blithering idiot?

ESPN doesn't have any money wrapped up in ND football. That's NBC. You know who they do have billions of dollars wrapped up in? The NBA. Did that stop them from shitting all over LeBron James, their leagues biggest star, for years? How about the MLB, who ESPN also has a contract with. Did that stop them from pushing the PED narrative or, again shitting on ARod, at one point the leagues biggest player, for years? How about the NFL? Another billion dollar tv contract. Yet all ESPN wanted to talk about all year was how much of a cluster fuck the Jets and Tebow were, week in and week out. This idea that ESPN is afraid of pushing and creating negative narratives is asinine. ESPN loves that shit. It's why they made Skip and SAS the faces of their network.

While I understand the argument that you're making you have to remember that there was no new breaking information that lead to Deadspin publishing this article. It wasn't a race to beat the other news organizations that lead to it being published, instead it was an anonymous email (not sure how that works exactly, but OK).

So considering this, what exactly was ESPN waiting for? Based on what's been reported ESPN and SI reporters have been confused about the story since day one. So we're supposed to believe that in the three or four months since the story of Te'o losing both his grandma and girlfriend no one at these news organizations looked closer at this story until the last few days? And ND and Te'o planned all along to come clean but Deadspin just happened to beat them to it?

The Championship game was over a week before this story broke, so when were they planning to ever come forward?

Guys Te'o wasn't in on it..

He found out from Notre dame that it was a hoax all along on Dec. 6th, and being the conservative Mormon Te'o is and his lack of experience with girls, this utterly confused and bewildered him.

Norte dame suggested on how to handle this going forward, and Te'o agrees to continue to act as if she was real until just after the championship game.

This story would've wrecked Notre Dame's flow and mental focus they've been building up leading into the game and it was suggested it would be better if it was kept quiet until then.

Not that it mattered since ND was completely molly whopped, but it could explain why Te'o sucked Samoan grapefruits in the game.

Now all the stuff being told from the family that she visited them and was with him and all the stuff he said that he met her... Leaves my brain straight up retarded..

Right? RIGHT??

.. Or he's gay..

..Or he WAS in on it..

I don't know man I don't know shit

EDIT: And now that bitch is back from the dead

Seriously you're theory could be plausible and at this point I'm positive Te'o is a moron, problem is that games been done with for 2 weeks now.

Eehh 2 weeks can still be seen as somewhat close to after the game, but yeah I get your point

I guess they weighed the options. Embarrassment from getting destroyed on the field or embarrassment from THE most publicized player on the team being involved in some scam.

I think the "Teo is gay" theory has been debunked by him dating this new broad for months.

Unless of course he's the master of shadows. Living a double life. Secretly in love and in a gay relationship with Jack Swarbrick.

They were sitting in their hands because they are no longer an investigative news organization. It's not their priority anymore. They are the MTV of sports. Deadspin, on the other hand, makes their living on breaking news like this and outscooping the big guys. You can call it shitty, lazy journalism, and I would agree, but the idea that ESPN is afraid to report negative stories about notre dame (or anyone for that matter) has little basis in this case.

I want to add this:

Even if she was 100% real, the entire thing is just downright disgusting IMO.

This dude actually went on TV claiming that him getting 2 interceptions in an asinine game somehow honored a victim of leukemia?

Sports media has stooped really low airing any of that.

The entire thing was such a crock of shit.. some 22 year old car-accident + coma + leuikimia victim values "Notre Dame Football" over experiencing being with her loved one at the end of her life?

You have to be fucking kidding me.

Americans who watch sports need to start complaining about the outright INSULTING behavior of the media.. yet Americans ate that shit up.

A girl supposedly had a horribly painful and tragic end to her life.

And yet people were watching some football player talk about HIS pain on National TV as some glorification of his character?

Fuck that shit.. I haven't watched sports regularly for over a decade and I'm honestly sickened by all of it.

If my girlfriend died of cancer, I'd have no ability to even speak to anyone about it on TV. That's a private matter, and my grieving would not be used for some TV story.

I think both Manti and the University have shown a lot of integrity throughout this whole ordeal, first in bringing this out into the open and then in addressing all concerns openly and honestly.

They didn't create any of the story. They just covered it as it unfolded.

I don't see the horror or the outrage. And you haven't watched sports over a decade because of network covering athletes beyond the field with supposed feel good stories?

What did you want the networks to do when they found out about his grandmother and fake gf's death? Again they didn't create shit.

They didn't create any of the story. They just covered it as it unfolded.

They created the segments with the solumn voiceovers.. they listened to this guy, recorded him, and then thought it would be good TV. I didn't accuse them of creating it, but they still obviously participating in the BS glorification of these people.

I don't see the horror or the outrage.

If it was real it was about a 22 year old girl dying a horrible death. That's where it becomes outrageous to me. I'm just a bit disgusted by it. Not angry, just sort of grossed out watching it thinking people actually let themselves get caught up in this exagerated emotion surrounding a game. If people need emotion in their lives they should try going to a children's hospital or something.

And you haven't watched sports over a decade because of network covering athletes beyond the field with supposed feel good stories?

I didn't say that at all. I only mentioned that because I don't recall anyone making such a big deal about the players when I was watching sports. It was about the player's performance on the field/court/etc.. not their personal lives. Way less fake hero worship.

I don't watch it because I fell out of the habit, not because of anything else.

What did you want the networks to do when they found out about his grandmother and fake gf's death? Again they didn't create shit.

My rant was largely about him doing it.. whether he believed she was real or not he's a twisted dude IMO for letting the media cover this as a "story."

But it's stooping pretty low IMO to use the death of a young girl for a football story.

IMO

None of it is the end of the world.. it's just TV and entertaining.

My comments are relative to that. My disgust is relative to the fact nobody was really harmed. It's still disgusting within it's own not-that-important context.

NBC Nightly News has a full segment basically defending Manti Teo. They're talking about how common it is for someone like Teo to be a victim.
