I must be reading this wrong. It almost reads like Te'o suspected way back in 2010 that Lennay was a prank character but that can't be right because we all know now that he was too dumb to figure that out until two days ago.

I wonder what this means then?
 
Those Facebook screenshots almost seem like him fishing to see if people believe the hoax. Like he is in on it and wants to see if him and his buddy are getting away with it.

This is so weird either way.

I still don't want to believe that he was actually in on creating her, even though the FB messages are kind of weird. My gut feeling has been since I first read the story that Te'o figured out it was a prank a long time ago but after he told people about her and then saw his grandmother's death as an opportunity to bury Lennay while his family was busy dealing with grandma.

I doubt that he really anticipated all of the media attention but once it blew up he decided to ride it out for all it was worth.

It's getting harder and harder to believe he could be dumb enough to fall for the hoax long-term and yet still be smart enough to tie his own shoes. He's claiming she never showed her face on Skype and always missed one-on-one meetings which is strange, but if these are real they mean he actually had suspicions about her authenticity to start.

I really wish I believed for a second we'd ever get the whole truth about this.
 
I don't know if this is the best, the worst or just the craziest story in Sports in the last few years.

Stuff like that is what makes me think more and more he was just a dumb, poor sucker. Instances of him asking friends and family members if they had heard of her. There is also players from Stanford who said that he was asking them if they had heard of her when ND played Stanford last year.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on Sunday on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. The person said Ottilia Te'o, Manti Te'o's mother, had spoken with Lennay Kekua about converting to Mormonism and that the family had engaged in Bible study with her via text message.

The guys on the NFL Countdown show were saying they'd rather (if they were drafting him) he be in on it the whole time than be so naive to the fact that he was being deceived. Or, you can't fix stupid.
 
so this story is going to die a slow death right? i mean, i don't really expect anything positive to come out his on-camera interview...only more dumb and more questions.

seems most media is content with his answers? even though they are mind-numbingly not possible. "oh, it never crossed his mind to visit his dieing 'love of his life'. makes sense".

was hoping for a better resolutions. guess i'll just go with 'this guy is dumber than a rock' and hope my team doesn't draft him...

Notre Dame spokesman tells South Bend Tribune that school's investigation of Manti Teo's girlfriend hoax was limited to electronic search. Investigators did not interview Teo or his family, examine cell phone records, emails or any other electronic communication to determine the extent of Teo's contact with the person claiming to be Lennay Kekua.
 
I dunno.. the psychology fits him being hoaxed.

The hoaxed are often looking for a reason to get the attention from the hoaxer.. and this guy seemed to eat up the attention of having a girlfriend who was in a car accident and sick, etc.

It looks like nothing but lies because he DID lie.. to exaggerate to his family how important this person was to him, and to exaggerate to the media how important she was.

Dumb and blinded by the attention he was getting.

People who think that isn't possible are odd to me. Yes it's also possible he was in on it from the start.. but.. really? He kept a hoax alive for 3 years?

Or.. he had an online friend who he was kind of suspicious about.. who was trying to get "out" of the relationship with stories of car accidents and comas.. but instead ended up causing the person on the other end Te'o, to buy into it all even more as it gave him the attention he wanted.. to be the grief mongerer he wanted to be.

Not sure what else can happen. No laws were broken, so I doubt we'll get any more in-depth investigation done. Ultimately we are just going to have to come to grips with the fact that we are never going to now all the facts or 100% of what exactly went on.
 
I think the media and the general public just don't care anymore. The story has so many branches and questions that it's difficult to wrangle in. There's an air of dirtiness and I don't blame most news outlets for not getting involved after the first few days.
 
Why does no one in the media seem to care that at the very least, Te'o is a huge pathological liar?

And how the heck has no one interviewed the friend behind it all yet?

This one really sticks out to me as I can't see any reason for the "haha" portion of it. Seems to read as some sort of inside joke between Te'o and Tui unless someone else can see a good reason for laughing right after a "RIP" tag:

Greenberg was just killing him today on Mike and Mike. It is great to see how much the narrative is starting to change. They also had a bunch of quotes from NFL GMs that made it sound like they didnt believe Teo either. If Dez fell to 19th over character issues, I think Teo will drop even more.

"Katie, put yourself in my situation. I, my whole world told me that she died on Sept. 12. Everybody knew that. This girl, who I committed myself to, died on Sept. 12," Te'o said.

"Now I get a phone call on Dec. 6, saying that she's alive and then I'm going be put on national TV two days later. And to ask me about the same question. You know, what would you do?" Te'o said.

Uh, was he even asked about her? He seemed to be volunteering that tidbit about "losing a girlfriend" to cancer out of the blue.
