VGLeaks Durango specs: x64 8-core CPU @1.6GHz, 8GB DDR3 + 32MB ESRAM, 50GB 6x BD...

We gotta see the games before we can be sure. On paper Orbis looks better, but there's still a lot we don't know about the 720.

Same thing was said about PS3, then 360 came out and almost every single third party game, with few exceptions, runs and looks better on 360.

I expect the exact same thing to happen with Durango.

Next Xbox will use the same Metro UI as the current 360 dash (and Windows 8, Windows mobile etc). It's now the universal Microsoft UI for everything.

So you're shit out of luck.

If you've used Windows Phone 7 or 8 or Windows 8/RT, the home screens are all user customizable.

That by itself will be an improvement over the current version for Xbox 360 users.

I think we need to pause for a moment and appreciate the fact that these next gen machines will see the death of graphical issues that haunted consoles for a long time such as screen-tearing, jaggies, lack of AF, below 30 frame rate, etc. They certainly won't be missed.

AF aside, keep dreaming.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. The same predictions were made at the tail end of last generation.

Rumour that Sony are dropping the DualShock for a Vita style, touch enabled controller.

Oh ok. Thanks guys. I think I did see that. I think its one of the ones with the awesome(laughable) black and white drawins with the keyboard on one:)

I didn't realize it was a true patent...
Well I don't know what to think about that.

I got ripped apart for saying at least one shit dev will release a sub 720p res game.
Me and I-Lo:)
I know it sounds crazy but I just think it will happen. Might not be one of the big boys but I just feel it in my bones.

Surely you can see why this is a completely different scenario altogether? PS3 was very alien tech, cell, multiple SPEs and split ram with GDDR3 and XDR etc. It took complex tools and porting. This will be completely different, with unified ram and close to PC specs.

I hope for the sake of all future PS4 owners, it does not. I pray to the cosmos for equality in terms of visual performance on both consoles.

I'm thrilled about the added RAM myself. More textures, different looking NPCs, etc...

That stuff wouldn't happen even if we got the full 8-year upgrade we might've expected a while ago. Which we're not.

From what we know at this time, why? If Orbis is using more off the shelf raw power hardware and Durango is the one using more unqiue hardware, it should work in Sony's favor.

There will never be equality, because the hardware is different. What you got in PS360 is pretty much as close as you can get. The difference in performance in mulitplatform games, with a exception of a percentage point of games (I can probably count them in both hands) is negligible the past generation.

I know gflops often don't mean much in practice, but isn't 13x8 GFLOPS rather good for a modern CPU? Looking here, a lot of top range CPUs can't crack 100 total.

Im guessing those are measured flops verse theoretical flops in this situation. I can't seem to figure out the point of that thread.

Off topic, but I think that was actually an old patent that someone found which may or may not be what will end up happening. The only thing we "know for sure" (it's a rumor so I guess we don't know shit really) is that there will be some kind of touch screen stuff going on.

That.

Karak, can you confirm any RPG's or Japanese related titles?

No not at all.
Though I wish Dragons Dogma 2 was hitting the next gens.
I guess that's not a Japanese RPG really. But whatever it is...it would be cool. Dragons Dogma faced a steep uphill battle against the current gen's tech it seems.

I'll field this. No-one can confirm anything because nobody has revealed anything officially, and even then many games that get announced during a console change never make it. Until it's got a 9.4 from IGN, it's not coming out.

Then, would it be prudent to expect that the margin of difference be lowered substantially compared to current generation? So much so that no one console would gain buyer's preference because of it?

Yeah. This E3 is going to be so massive. There are so many potential gamechangers here from actual games to controls to apps etc.. No one knows what the next big thing in the industry is going to be. It is exciting but worrying at the same time to see what the new trend is going to be.

The fact that these systems are supposed to be revealed "within weeks, not months" is making hype levels reach critical mass. The next-gen is at last about to be upon us, and I fucking love when the flood gates start to open here around old Gaf.

Good times a comin'.

Just realized the missing block that Arthur was referring to. That stuff is pretty important to when it comes to graphics. It doesn't add raw horsepower, but I did rather have that than an extra half teraflop, potentially more.

I wish James wasn't.

He's too good of a poster to resort to that.

I wouldn't call it kool aid. I don't think they are trying to compete in the tech arms race with Sony. They apparently spent less of their budget on GPU, 12CUs vs 18. And made some performance sacrifices to the memory system to have the quantity required for heavy non-game functions. I don't think it's a PS2 and Xbox difference in aggregate performance. However in practical terms, I doubt the two will be as closely matched as the PS3/X360 generation. From what we "know", that is stuff DF confirmed through multiple independent sources, PS4 easily seems stronger. I think the burden of proof lies with those people that claim the large difference in GPU logic is overcome by the move DMAs. Seems like space age technology. Maybe MS did have an inside deal with AMD and its GPU tech is a few years ahead, but I doubt it.

The secret sauce is real?

this will definitely happen. people shit on you for that? hell i would want it to happen to see how good a 576p game could look with awesome hardware.

The closer the people are to actual projects, the quieter they are. For example, I would speculate that GopherD himself may have substantial insider information. However, I do not know if he is a developer and just subtly alluded to it just now. Unlike Thuway, Proelite and Karak, GopherD seldom comments about specifications and his few posts are not only quite pertinent yet carefully vague but also carry weight as evidenced when other members who quote his posts as a part of continuing speculations. I doubt we shall hear anything official from people who are coding for either platform for a very long time.

ooh I never thought that Gopher might potentially be one :D interesting.

You know, if this Durango method to gauge more power via secret sauce pays off...

It could then lend itself to PC hardware in the future. Imagine getting even more bang for your buck on PC hardware at a cheaper price...

I don't see Esram and move engines ever making it to PC hardware.
