Possibly, but more than that, I think. I don't totally understand it, so I don't really want to get into it.
It was a real bitch letting go of the teraflop numbers once more solid "real-world" numbers came in. But I was gently reminded that they aren't indicative enough to do so.
If you want evidence that is irrefutable, then I suggest waiting for actual games to be shown.
I can appreciate that, I guess what I want to know is, what is this 'secret sauce' certain sources have spoken of, and on what merit did they conclude its potency?
Also, on what basis did they form the opinion of Durango > Orbis earlier on?
At least he's not blatantThen I remember Proelite started to post about not using TFlops to measure next gen performance. A week before new specs were leaked.
The proof is ultimately in the games...
But that doesn't necessarily prove technical superiority of a given platform.
I think next-gen, more than ever before, will separate the wheat from the chaff.
How good a game looks is largely going to be a function of resources, budget, artists, development time, etc., moreso than hardware (so long as the hardware is sufficiently powerful).
Devs next gen will have an amazing canvass to work on, and that's all this technical mumbo jumbo amounts to -- a canvas.
Pushing raw polys, high framerates, and increased resolution only gets you so far.
I dont think people are arguing that Durango > Orbis. They are arguing that Durango = Orbis and not Orbis > Durango as the current specs might allow one to believe. At least that is what I think they were arguing.
Noise, most likely.
So it'll look like this?Next Xbox will use the same Metro UI as the current 360 dash (and Windows 8, Windows mobile etc). It's now the universal Microsoft UI for everything.
Unless you can explain in detail every alleged spec that's listed in the OP your outlook is as good as mine. Which is not all that good to be honest. We can't just pick the specs we understand and judge those systems based on that. Too soon to judge imo.For the record, I'm not of the opinion that Durango is "weak".
Just that the specs we have to go by indicate that there's a significant difference in bandwidth and GPU performance between Durango and Orbis based upon what we know.
This isn't a far fetched view, Eurogamer (at first glance) concurs.
I'm skeptical that accelerator units will provide that much of a difference (as both systems will have them)...but this is all subject to change with more information. But based on what we know, the performance divide is larger than last gen even if using similar components. Again, subject to change, but that's my outlook of things so far.
I believe Karak and Proelite said Durango slightly > Orbis earlier. Though they may have changed their opinion now. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, as details and posts have got messy the last few days, so I could be wrong.
So it'll look like this?
I wonder if the secret sauce is
the OBAN . An Interposer, much like a memory controller similar to a blitter ..
or the HW dsp's ...
According to Digital Foundry Orbis has a much better GPU. Should be interesting to see how things pan out for multiplatform projects.
Since you said no to kinect, something to do with the framebuffer, then?
This.
I guess at some point (months ago), Durango > Orbis (lherre said something like this).
Only if you want it.

I'd like to expect the next xbox can do 1920X1080 with 4X AA , direct X 11 level shaders running 30 frames per second with 500,000-1,000,000 polys a frame but perhaps that's too much ?
Okay, so what does all of this mean for the games in question.
On the original xbox most games ran at 640X480 with 2x AA and barely direct x 8 level graphics shaders (basic bump mapping, pixel shading and lighting) with polygon throughput per scene (frame) around 20-30,000 running at 30 frames per second.
Xbox 720 could pull off 1280X720 with 2 x AA with roughly direct x 9 level graphical shaders running 30 frames per second and tossing around somewhere north of 100,000 polys a frame.

Haven't you heard it? Better GPU is not a better GPU (unless it's in Durant LOL). You people using these tflops, giga watz etc doesn't mean anything. It's secret jizz that makes the difference, and secret jizz in Durant is better then the one in that Japanese Orbit thing. Logic sucks, Durant wins
Please make 1080p mandatory for those next generation consoles. They are more than capable of pushing good IQ with 1080p.
There's not anything secret about the audio DSP, though I've been told basically an entire CPU in the devkit was dedicated to emulating it.

Heh. Ray Tracing.
Are you 11?

I'm pretty confident we'll see a similar situation to this Gen, but far closer.
Each console will have its development advantages and disadvantages compared to the other.
I reckon the multiplats will be far closer to parity than current ones are.
Tech dudes! Can someone shed some light on this:
1. The clock speed of the CPU. I see people shouting "the architecture is different!" but what exactly do you mean? I'd like someone to flesh this out.
2. 8GB DDR3 vs 4GB DDR5. The latter is obviously faster, but in a real world scenario, which is better? More ram, or faster ram?

so theres more than memory management?
Does not help that they are either employed by Microsoft or their sources are instead. Perhaps the conjecture from GAF sources should be coupled with more concrete backing from now on or something? I mean, the whole secret sauce thing is so vague and amiss at this point..
I do find it funny that Steve and Thuway, two people who were largely disregarded long ago, seemed to be so accurate with information, and so early on too.
The thing about RAM is, more isn't necessarily better, you only need enough. If Orbis has at least 4GB I think it'll be fine.
As a baseline I rarely see PC games today with high-res textures and other enhancements go over 3GB, most are under 2.5GB.
While Sony exclusives will be in their own bubble with similar results, don't be surprised to see some new PC games go over the 4GB.
I hope so. People shouldn't feel bad about buying the console they prefer whenever a multiplat game comes out that they want. Still mad I don't get to play Bayonetta the way it was meant to be played.
Same could be said about memory speed though...The thing about RAM is, more isn't necessarily better, you only need enough. If Orbis has at least 4GB I think it'll be fine.
The Audio DSP in Durango has such an amazing potential , its spelt out in this MS patent!
http://www.google.com/patents/US201...a=X&ei=7B_-UJyuD6HSmAX2yIDgAw&ved=0CDMQ6AEwAA
And the same will go for DSP for Video ...
BUT I still believe OBAN is the real secret sauch, even more so than the DSP..
My personal hope, is that maybe a barrier will be broken and we get some cross platform play.
Fuck that would be awesome. Maybe if these consoles are as similar as they appear, that could be possible?
so once again we compare closed system (console) and PC?
