Android Gaming Thread New OP

Hello Android users,

This was the most robust Android-related thread I could find, so forgive me if this query seems out of place...

My company works out of Japan, and is asking for information on the best Android phone model for gaming. I'd be using it to test/play a variety of games and it would probably come in handy for overseas business as well, so decent roaming support would be ideal.

- Is there a definitive go-to phone for mobile gamers on Android these days?
- Do some have more advanced roaming/overseas features than others?
- I will be "managing" this device, so bronus points for it being cool and responsive.

I'm still a feature phone user myself, so I have absolutely no idea about these things. I'll be doing some searching around, but I trust GAF as a source of gaming knowledge so if anyone can point me in the right direction, it'd be much appreciated.

Thanks!

You could get a Samsung S3, arguably the most popular high end phone.

I would pay $10 in a heartbeat for 7 Little Words if it had an 'unlock all' option. The current IAP pricing is too high considering the uneven difficulty in the puzzle packs.

nexus 4, its cheap, powerful, and running on vanilla android meaning you get latest updates as and when for checking your apps/games against

Thanks, guys. I'll read some reviews.
Any advantage in having vanilla Android as opposed to the latest 'Jelly Bean' version?
Any differences in using abroad/roaming foreign networks between these phones?

I literally have no idea, and will probably end up picking one of these two if the price fits.

A lot of people prefer the stock Android UI over the vendor-specific ones on other devices. And vanilla tends to be a bit more stable.

Nexus 4 lacks LTE support whereas the S3 has it, but other than that I'm not sure how they each handle roaming.

After looking up what LTE is I've found it may be quite crucial to my needs, so thanks for pointing that out =)

There may be different models available in Japan, so I'll have a fiddle at some stores. Seems to be a toss-up between the popular S3, the cool-kids' Nexus 4 and the super-roamy HTC.

My company is literally saying "get the best" so I could just go and get the most expensive one, but that ain't how we roll on here.

Don't forget the Note 2. It's a bigger and faster S3 with a stylus. Also that HTC Butterfly is meant to be good and I believe the one sold in Japan is not gimped with limited memory as it has an SD card slot I think unlike the US version which is stuck at 16GB with no ability to expand.

Slowly but surely I am, indeed, getting used to Temple Run 2. I can feel the old fire returning as every good and fruitful goal in my life crashes against the rocks of the Temple and disperses into sea foam :-(

Damn you, Imagni. Damn your eyes!

At first I thought it was way to hard to see what was going on in it but, the more I play it the more I'm starting to see how awesome it is.

Rockstar needs to get their shit together. I have a Galaxy Note 2 and Vice City is not on my play store because my device is not supported. The thing is, I know a few people who have the same phone and can download the game fine. It doesnt seem like it depends on the carrier since I saw two people on the same network having this issue. What gives??

Anyways, just downloaded temple run 2. Looks a lot better but I think I prefer the first one.

I've bought Pen and Paper, amazing game. Yesterday I finally managed to beat Mom with my second party.

Now DungeonDiary is sucking my attention... such a great game, it is funny to program the character and see how it works out. I wish there were more games like this.

My character:

Valy's equipment: Bamboo sword+4/Leather shield+3/Parka+3/Check skirt+2/Over knee socks+1/MIWAKO's Sneakers+2/YUUTA's Cotton panties+1/Paper ribbon+1/KYOUKO's Ney roll+3

I have a question, how can you beat the Earth Lake? So many water you cannot pass...

Guys, is Final Fantasy Dimensions good? And I mean good, not "it's an okay game for a tablet" because it's not exactly cheap and I could buy a GBA game instead.

Do the different equipment types make any difference, or just the +ratings?

Different equipment have different stats... for instance in weapons Ladle<Fruit knife<Bamboo sword (the one I have now).

It seems it always costs the same to upgrade your equipment, so at the end it's cheaper to have good equipment. Also some things like the glasses have "random" stats, I think...

If you go with a GBA game and are set on a ff game you should totally buy ff: Tactics advanced.

If you already have it, buy it again.

I haven't heard bad things, though you should be warned it was originally a game developed for smaller-resolution phones so the graphics aren't going to be exactly cutting-edge.

Not to pull things off topic, but this is literally the first time I've ever heard someone speak positively about FFTA.

Funny, because I recently found FFTA for $200 MXN which is cheaper than FF Dimensions. Now, FFT on PS1 is one of my absolute favorite games ever, and the one on DS was pretty great too.

The problem is that the gba version is worse than the ds version in basically every way possible.

Oh, well.
I'll probably buy it anyway because it's cheap.

To not derail the topic: Has anyone found a way to play Kemco RPGs on tablets? I bought one some months ago, but it required me to turn cellular data on to verify my purchase... gladly I got a refund quickly. Also, are they good?

Where are you finding the better equipment? I can't seem to find anything besides the basic Ladle/Plastic Sheet/Cardboard Box/etc. I'm kind of in a rut where I can either tear through an easier mission and get a crappy reward, or I go for a higher reward mission and get crushed.

The only missions I do are the Kill X monster if the floor is not very high (and the enemy is weak), or the escort missions. The other ones are not really worth it. If you don't see this kind of missions yet, sell the treasure boxes and they will appear eventually.

After that, the equipment I have is mostly from "The monster's nest". I have rules regarding to objects, right now it is "Pick up equipment from floor B5 or higher", "^Pick up boxes from floor B5 or higher" and "Pick up crystals from floor B5 or higher". I believe lower number floors have worse equipment, but I'm not sure.

Sell treasure boxes until you have the healing spell and you'll manage. Do escort missions if you feel you can't do others (always go for low number floors at first)

When you pay debt your stats improve, and more rules / dungeons appear. I do not remember if the game says so, but just in case...

I have a question, how can you beat the Earth Lake? So many water you cannot pass...

You need equipment that grants the Swim skill. Basically it's any underwear item that's a swimsuit.

When I'm grinding for items, I usually do a Free quest and set my item pickups to just the last 5 or 10 floors of my trip. I also ignore any herbs/mushrooms once I'm strong enough. And yeah, I think The Monster's Nest is the first place where you start getting better items.

I used to think that the escort missions would deliver rare items, but I don't think the named items are any different from regular ones. They have the same random chance and stats, but with the name on them.

I haven't found any super-strong items for shirt and pants/skirt yet. The long/short swords and iron/cross shield totally outclass any weapons you find that point, whereas previous weapons were small upgrades.

I've made it to the Ancient City and I still get my ass kicked every time. I have about $21M of debt left.

Gonna start an OT for the game shortly!

Ahhhh, I think that's my problem. I have that rule set to pick up everything, so my inventory fills up with mushrooms and crap. I didn't realize you could specify certain item types.

Ahhhh, I think that's my problem. I have that rule set to pick up everything, so my inventory fills up with mushrooms and crap. I didn't realize you could specify certain item types.

I've "beaten" the game by paying off all my debts. This is the strategy I use to keep inventory space available (assuming you've learned these rules):

1) Use the identify mushroom and grass skills
2) Set the threshold for using hp, mp and sp items very high (90%+) so you'll immediately use those items
3) Set rules to throw away all mushrooms and grasses (you will need a separate rule for each item)
4) Set the rule to identify items every 2-3 floor
5) Set a rule for each inferior equipment and throw it away
6) Send powerup crystals to your stash (2mp each)

By consuming all the healing items you should never run out of resources until the boss level. Optionally you can send treasure chests to your stash too, but I figured I needed the mp for the last level.

I say "beaten" because the game unlocks certain things after you've repaid your debts. I'll let you guys find out what it is. :)

I think overall I'd recommend Farming Simulator if you're looking for that kind of thing, surprisingly solid design. Apparently it's a port of the 3DS game except cheaper (even with all the IAP unlocks it won't cost the crazy 30-40€ price of the 3DS game). Also there's no premium currency BS in the game, just regular coins that you earn by selling your crops.

It's #3 in the paid apps charts here in Germany (compared to the #2 spot of the PC version in the PC retail charts).

Yeah.. I'm pretty sure Royal Revolt! is one of the best Android games I've ever played.

I posted about it earlier, but after putting hours into it, it's definitely addicting, has great graphics, extremely polished, runs perfectly smooth on my Galaxy Nexus, and is a lot of fun.

It's basically a dumbed down DoTA/Tower defense game. You can upgrade your hero and your troops and select two default abilities for your hero to have access to before you play a level. These abilities are also upgradable. There are daily challenges in which you can earn more gold and it's fun/challenging trying to 3 star every level by completing it fast enough.

Thanks for your input!

My last worry would be about bloatware, as I'm going to feel less inclined to experiment and really get inside the device if it's filled with pointless fluff. Do any of the above mentioned phones (or manufacturers in general) suffer from this?

I have a pretty decent list now, so gonna go down the shops and see how they feel.
Appreciate the advice from everyone =)

Man, if I was actually good at game designing, I'd totally make a rollercoaster tycoon rip-off-esque kairosoft game.

Even if you get a device with all the bloatware in the world, you can put a different ROM on it with no bloat

Anyone have suggestions for games worth buying? I want more and the ones I already bought are either uninstalled or have bad controls. (Like Metal SLug, I love the series but that touch control, blech, almost not worth buying for those.)

So, my team and I created an Android game in less than 48 hours for this year's Global Game Jam. It's up on Google Play, if any of you guys feel like giving it a shot. It's much better on tablets since on phones it's a little hard to see what's going on, but it's definitely playable.

Think of Super Crate Box gameplay with some other interesting mechanics thrown in (limited vision, the background song changes as you get closer to dying, etc...). Plus if you wear headphones you can hear where your enemies are being spawned, so do wear headphones if you want to last longer :P

Sounds good, I will check it out Fireblend.

I don't know what you already have but here's what I play quite a lot of:

Ski Safari - gameplay that is similar to Tiny Wings but easier slopes and much more depth to the gameplay (challenging to get the highest score with extra mechanics). Lots of fun and charm.

Gunman Clive - fun platformer, neogaf beril's (sp?) game. Quite a bit of mega man gameplay design, cool bosses, art style and music. Enjoyable game.

Expendable Rearmed - dreamcast game, arcade dual-stick shooter/run and gun.

Zombie Highway - scrape and shoot off all those zombies on your car

And some decent mentions: Eufloria HD, Robotek, Dungeon Raid, Pew Pew 2, Chu Chu Rocket, Slice, Huebrix, Ikaruga (bit hard to play and quite pricey though). Oh super hexagon...and don't play tiny towers :P

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried out Zombie Highway. Didn't fancy me very much so I got a refund. I'll definitely consider Expendables as my next purchase. Looks very fun. I already own chuchu and already have plans to buy Clive, just not yet.

No worries, shame about Zombie Highway but yeah it's a small and simple enough game to quickly check out within the refund..not much else to it but I've been a fan for a while. A decent shootemup is Xelorians, works with a stylus/pen too.

Btw about Eufloria HD, it's a real time strategy game - 10-20 minutes per level usually..different difficulties too. One of my favourite games (even when it was just on PC)

Zoomed in on a different shot:
the_birds_and_the_trees.jpg

And Robotek is pretty cool as well, it's actually free but pay to get rid of ads +costume, it's a tactical game and has online multiplayer+unlockables, a bit of luck to the gameplay but still needs smart decisions and lot of fun, can be addicting:

Also if you haven't already played it - Dead Trigger, it's not a paid game but a rather good zombie FPS, especially the arcade survival maps.

Thank you GAF for this thread. I didn't read all 98 pages carefully but being new to mobile gaming (just got my first cell phone earlier this month, it's the SGS3) and deciding it'd be nice to have small, free/cheap games for short bus rides and the likes, I decided to take a peek.
- I've bought 180 Ultra, it's exactly the kind of game I want for this platform (Left a 5 star review too :)) Thanks, wondermega.
- I got Stiled, which also seems perfect for my needs. Thanks to whoever recommended it (sorry, I forgot already >_>).
- I also got Gyro, though the permissions required for it made me wary. A brain-dead simple timekiller.

I also got a bunch of those free action/RPG games: Zenonia (lite), Illusia 2, Caligo (lite). I think I'd like these games a lot more on a real console, though. I really didn't care for the virtual d-pad at all. I doubt I'll play them much and will probably uninstall them soon. Why won't these Zelda clones be like the DS one that plays exclusively with the stylus? Seems like it'd be the perfect kind of controls for these games... anyone got recommendations like that for Android?

Also, there was an ad in Gyro for a game called Ninja Royale. Intrigued by the description (action-RPG with mobile-optimized touch controls? yes please), I downloaded it, despite the permissions being shady as hell (seriously, why?). Then, when I run it, the game won't start until I login to some Mobage account (or through Facebook, which I don't use). What the hell? It didn't look like an MMO at all, so why is a login/internet connection required? Bah. Anyone played it and care to enlighten this clueless noob?

Just picked up Rayman jungle run. Just fantastic highly recommended

Everyone recommended this, and I liked Rayman Origins, so I decided to check it out. Then I saw reviews on Google Play saying it has a limit of 5 offline uses...?? WTF is up with that? The whole point of mobile gaming is so I can play by quick bursts in places with no internet or wifi (bus rides etc.) or on the plane. What utter BS, they just lost a customer. :(
