Is it just me or has radio gotten much, much worse...

You have a tape deck? Get one of these, assuming you have a portable music player:

i bought mine at Walgreens for like $5. Works great.

What brand is this? I've been trying to get one of these for the longest but can never decide as I always see bad reviews for most of them on Amazon.
I'd say just save up and buy an after market head unit with an RCA jack or iPod USB cable. Much better sound quality.

LA has some good stations. Although it really depends on your tastes.

Jack FM continually amazes me with the quality of their playlist. They repeat some classic stuff a bit too much but they really do seem to stand by their "playing what we want" tagline.

I hate the radio because its like 6 songs and all the "good" channels play the same songs. I just listen to my iPhone unless I'm riding with a friend who doesn't have a port/adapter for mp3s

I've been out of the US for 7 years, but I remember there was a good classic rock station back in Florida when I lived there. Don't remember the name of it though. In the 90s radio was pretty good too. We had one station that played NIN, Nirvana, Metallica, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, Offspring, Social D, and stuff like that. I remember being in middle school and just recording whatever that station would play onto a cassette tape.

I really can't comment on modern radio but when I was home for Christmas last year, 24/7 Christmas music on 107.7 was pretty awesome! Fuckin love Christmas music.

It's the music if you are listening to a station playing anything new.

106 KMEL in the Bay Area is better today than it has been for the last 15 years or so.

Probably because Hip Hop itself is better today than it has been for the last 15 years or so.

Top 40 hit radio stations is what's bad.
Here we got

3 top pop stations
3 top classic rock
2 top alternative rock
2 top country
2 independent stations

As a mostly trance/electronic listener, the 1 independent station plays some drum and bass mixed with some other stuff after midnight sometimes. Other than that its ALL repeat over and over.

We have 1 independent station around here, and its great. Everything else constantly plays whatever is new and big, even the alt rock station. I heard the new mumford and sons 4 times in one hour, fuck that.

The radio I listen to is Classical and Jazz. Neither station plays commercials, the DJs are nice and don't yell about everything, and I don't hear the same song more than twice a week.

I don't envy you.

I feel like radio died with the 80's, and I wasn't even around then.

Not to be that guy, but 80s radio was AMAZING, at least here in NY.

We had WLIR out on Long Island. You could listen for days and not hear the same song twice. Cool DJs and fun programs...I miss those days :(. Radio today is a pale shadow.

That is like worst station out here.

Though, honestly, I'm just glad I have a USB Jack in my radio.

Music on the radio has always been awful. Sturgeon's Law and all that. I think you just got some revisionist nostalgia in remembering only the good stuff.

Why would you even listen to radio of your own free will? In this age?

Shouldn't this be your reaction every time you turn it on?

new music confuses me, it seems rock music stations play folk guitar music and weird pop synth music or something.

Corporate radio effectively killed rock music radio in Boston. It's rather depressing. Thanks CBS and Clear Channel!

Although Boston.com bought up a bunch of WFNX employees and now they have their own web based radio station, which is all right.

I still listen to WBRU in the car here, because they are a weird hybrid of college station/non-profit but commercial. Even then they have a rather repetitive playlist, but it's partially the listeners fault because I hear the requests when they come in and the 'top request' countdown on friday nights. They do play an hour every night of deeper cuts and a half hour of local band stuff, which is usually awesome.

Everything else sucks. =(

I have a Classic Rock station here who used to play Walton and Johnson in the morning. That talk show was the only reason I turned on a radio. They also play Led Zeppelin all through the night, but really only there hits. I use Spotify now for all my music and download anybody that isn't on Spotify.

Local radio stations really went downhill here. There used to be a time when I could turn on the radio and actually hear new stuff. Now it's the same awful top pop crap played over and over. :\

Nowdays, I have my iPod, and Pandora, and Spotify.

When you work in a factory, the radio is on. And when you work for 50hrs Monday through Friday on the same station, you'll go insane. Jack fm in Washington is good for a few days, but by week 2 of not changing the station, songs will repeat near daily. It's better than the pop stations which will FEELS LIKE I AM JUST TOO CLOSE TO LOVE YOU once an hour. We have kexp though, which no one wants to listen to but me and doesn't always come in well.

Are you all talking about 89.3 in the Twin Cities? That is a great station. Minneapolis/St. Paul has a bunch of good radio though. KFAI, Jazz 88, and KMOJ The People's Station are all gold.

Absolutely. Founding member.

I stop listening to radio when they kept playing Adele and "Move like Jagger" every time I drive home from work. My drive home is about 45 minutes and within that timeframe they always play those two songs.

You say Lady Gaga, I say Madonna Ciccone.
You say Justin Bieber, I say Michael Jackson.
You say Taylor Swift, I say Elvis Presley.
You say Black Eyed Peas,I say Queen.
You say Westlife, I say The Beatles.
You say Owl city, I say Guns n' Roses.
You say Linkin Park, I say The Rolling Stone.
You say Beyonce Knowles, I say Nirvana
You say Chris Brown, I say Bob Dylan.
You say Avril Lavigne, I say Van Halen.
You say Pink, I say AC/DC
You say Fashion n'Glamour, i say Rock n'Roll !

I feel like I'm listening to my dad in this thread. Listening to music on FM Radio in this day in age?

It's free. Now go mow the lawn. I don't care if it's past midnight and it's been snowing, and there are wolves outside and...

all this shit

means I am officially old. I don't identify with, any of those people. I've only heard music from maybe 3 of those artists.

Its always been shit, at least where I grew up. I remember on the ride going to school maybe 13 or 14 years ago and the same god damn j-lo song would play every fucking morning. Always at 8:05 am. WHY

Our local classic rock station considered hair metal shit like Poison and Bon Jovi "classic" back in the late 90s. Thank the baby Muhammad for internet radio nowadays

I still listen to quite a bit of radio, come to think of it. I enjoy NPR and my local jazz station. I also have a soft spot for oldies, so I tune into those sorts of stations as well. Somehow it can be more comforting than just listening to my MP3 player.

I'm still waiting for a 90s oldies station... I figure it's bound to happen at some point.

I still have no idea how it works. (But I never really bothered trying to figure it out.)

How do they work?

I still have no idea either :lol Even though I've always been curious, I've been equally lazy.

I can't imagine not listening to music out of an mp3 player/ipod nowadays.

I'd hate driving if I had to listen to the radio.

I don't listen to the radio anymore for music really. I just plug in my iPod and listen to podcasts and my own music.

Though I have have noticed that I am my own radio station kinda. I listen to the same albums over and over. And I don't expose myself to new music.

Sometimes when I turn on the radio it is refreshing to hear stuff that is not on my iPod.

I do tune into news and sports stations on occasion though.

I love it when someone bitch's about the radio only to play his/her personal music player filled with radio songs. I guess bubblegum is better when you get to choose the flavor aye?

I tune to NPR then never turn away from it.
This has basically be my thing for the past many years now. I don't mind listening to the radio, but even our alternative rock plays the same 20 songs, but then a few other older but still super popular songs. I know my GF who listens to a ton of that alternative and alt 90's rock thinks that there is something wrong with me or I am just trying to be a hipster, but she also doesn't listen to as much music as I do, and she is the type of person who cherry picks songs from an artist but never look into anymore music by that artist. I am not saying that makes her a bad person because I get that is the way that most people listen to music, but I enjoy listening to an entire album as an experience and if I like that album, look into their other stuff.

I listen to a bunch of the college stations and they actually play new music, but will also play some of the deeper cuts from really old classic rock for like a 2 hour block during one night a week. You will never hear Stairway to Heaven, Iron Man, or Barracuda anywhere in there. I like this and continue to listen, and even a year ago when I could threw a few bucks their way during their donation drive.

I think its to drive the point that radio stations don't mind stuffing the same 10 songs on the hour, every hour down your throat. No diversity at all.

Naw there are always good stations if you live in a college town

Absolutely. On the whole, radio in the Boston area is shit, but there's always WERS at night. Reggae/Hip-Hop during the week, old school R&B on Saturday nights. It's good, and I'm not going to stop because entrement
!

NPR is the only radio i listen

and when I find myself in a car with SirusXM, I got it on The Joint or Foxhole Radio.
