Is it just me or has radio gotten much, much worse...

I think its to drive the point that radio stations don't mind stuffing the same 10 songs on the hour, every hour down your throat. No diversity at all.

My ears have never discovered any diversity on FM radio. Even on the request shows people wanna hear songs that were already played 99 times that day. Repetitive playlists seem to cater to the type of people that aren't interested enough in music to invest in an alternative to the radio.

Been using an FM car tuner since 2006, never going back. Just plug my phone in and listen to my tunes from my phone.

No, it's not just you. It's gotten so bad, they need to have benefit concerts for the commercial radio industry. Every radio station I've ever loved has changed formats, dropped all their talent, or just plain went off the air. Washington DC's completely awesome alt-rock station, WHFS. Dead. Became a spanish language station. Their Jazz station(s) WJZE and Jazzy100, gone. One became an oldies station that now plays that Top 40 "Jack-FM" format. Their comedy talk/jazz night time station, that hosted Howard Stern and gave Opie and Anthony(who suck btw and are part of the problem) became a shitty sports talk station no one listens to.

The people who ran radio used to be pioneers, then they became entrepreneurs, then they became media moguls, then they became assholes and jerks, now they're brain eating zombies on an end run.

So, no, it's not just you.

Jack-FM

Bob-FM
Dave-FM

(notice I didn't even mention "urban" contemporary. complete shitshow. Thank God for WPFW, but they only play real hip hop 1-2 hours a day, if that. And it's public radio. smdh.)
WHFS 99.1 ----> ELZOL 99.1 ---> All news 99.1. WHFS 105.7 for short period of time. Quickly turned into all sports. like 106.7 it turned into a "the fan" station. Now WHFS is back again on 97.5. Shitty signal in most areas, a lot of old DJ's, 10 song playlist. The biggest problem is the station is more commercials/promos then anything. Yes, I agree radio sucks but every now and then I get bored of what I'm listening too and hear a new catchy song on the radio.

The rock stations in Florida suck as they mostly play horrendous new music. Actually the best station I've found is an internet stream in Euro Truck Simulator 2 from the netherlands I think. No ads and it plays mostly classic rock songs from the 60s to the last decade (if you can call shit like early Linkin Park classics I guess).

lol can't believe someone actually did it.

FM radio died for me in the 90's when I discovered the internet. The only exposure I get now is when I'm riding in a friend's car. And even in that short amount of time somehow songs get played the fuck out. No sir, I do not want to listen to Mumford and Sons and Maroon 5 again for the 100th time. I've been bitching about radio for so long my friends' eyes probably roll so hard, that said I can't help but feel that the OP is right and that it's gotten worse and worse.

Radio in the UK at least has been awful for a long time. At least local radio has been. The only thing that made me even bother with my old radio station were the hilarious hosts, who sadly left in 2010 giving me no reason to even bother with the radio, considering that most station's seem to be obsessed with playing the same couple of hits over and over again. I'd prefer to listen to my music collection on my PC or phone then even turn on my radio.

Now living in Canada, I can happily say that most mainstream radio stations are still awful.

Yeah I couldn't even imagine British radio. I mean, brits are good with indie, rock, dub, and synth stuff, but omg BritPop is the worst.

If i'm in the car which is the only time I listen to the radio I'm listening to NPR. Unless its Dianne Rehm and then I just turn the damn thing off.

no its always been pretty shitty I haven't listened to the radio in years and if I do its Tejano thats pretty much it

I stopped listening to most german radio stations several years ago. The ones from luxemburg (100,7) and belgium (Classic 21) are actually much better, so if I do listen to radio, I listen to these stations. Although, Deutschlandfunk is still pretty good sometimes.

Anyone else listen to Radio Disney back in the day when they played kid music? There wasnt ever a bad song cuz you were an idiot child. And this was back before they had the manufactured pop stars like Hilary Duff, Miley Cyrus, One Direction, etc.

Maroon 5 "Makes Me Wonder" is my jam though. It's the sound track to the cel-shaded music video of my life. Lots of sliding across the hood of my '73 Charger, chasing badguys down back alleys, chilling with my bros, and dancing for the camera.

Unless its Dianne Rehm and then I just turn the damn thing off.

discrimination. differently abled persons can have radio shows too.

VV cute. I actually liked this video, and there are no good videos these days. The kids even do the swim at the end.

True dat.

I love taylor swift but they only play her most recent singles. What's up with that?

You belong with me is still a great song. It's like we got ADD and only know what songs came out within the last month

Shes a terrible host. She plays softball with everybody and its basically 5-10 minutes of her guest promoting themselves/their agenda.

Pretty sure its just us. We are getting old. I remember my parents saying the same stuff when I was in the backseat wiggling around and dancing while constrained by my seat belt.

We are just yelling at clouds and noone cares but us.

I honestly don't even hate mainstream top 40 pop, but I am surprised at how homogeneous everything seems to be.

I went without a radio in my car for over 8 years and just recently got a new one. Seems like almost half the time I tune into an FM station, they're playing something that already seemed played out a decade ago. And the other half is just a small handful of the same new tracks on rotation.

I can't believe radio still exists. In my life it's pretty much white noise that fades in and out as I go about my day.

I'm struggling to find the reason why music channels still exist. It makes sense that MTV stopped doing it because it's a dying format, but there are still dozens of channels still running playing Gagnam style 10 times an hour or something.

I think the majority of radio today is trash...

That said, there's an occasional "bright spot" every now an than. The Lumineers-Hey Ho, Of Monsters and Men, Mumford and Sons-I will Wait

I really like some more "traditional" music is starting to be interwoven a bit with all of this auto tune katy perry nonsense.

Also, this Muse song played yesterday on my main stream radio station and my jaw fell to the floor by just how "to good" it was for radio: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ek0SgwWmF9w

Not just the US, every country has that issue. The only radio I still listen to is non-music shows and even then I barely do that.

Instead I McGuyvered my Nexus 7 in my car and use Spotify now.

God bless the BBC. Still listen to 6 Music and Radio 4 almost every day.

2 as well. 6 Music for exciting and interesting music, 2 for perfectly-pitched comforting MOR stuff (but it's terribly guilty of the repetition suggested earlier)... and Ken Bruce and Popmaster.

And, while I don't listen to it all that much, I'm very glad 3 exists, too.

It's just 1 that's... well, Not For Me.

I don't even listen to radio anymore. It's the same songs over and over. Not even quality, just whoever is represented by the bigger agency that bought airtime. At any given time, my local radio plays Rihanna songs from the past 5 years over and over. I can't stand her or her music.

"You either shut up or get cut out
They don't wanna hear about it
It's only inches on the reel-to-reel
And the radio is in the hands of such a lot of fools
Tryin' to anaesthetise the way that you feel

Radio is a sound salvation
Radio is cleaning up the nation
They say you better listen to the voice of reason
But they don't give you any choice
'Cause they think that it's treason
So you had better do as you are told
You better listen to the radio"

I have XM satellite and I never listen to it really. For some reason I hate the quality of the sound when songs come on. It sounds distorted than listening to the radio or my ipod. I actually like my local radio stations. Want old rock? Tune it to 96.9 The Eagle. Want new rock? Tune X102.9. Want country? 99.9 Gator Country.

I sometimes listen to Zane's show, but 1 definitely isn't for me anymore. The Live Lounge is a shadow of its former self. 6 and 4 get most of my attention, but I do actually put 2 on a few times a week. Dermot O'Leary is surprisingly tolerable in a radio setting, and he usually gets good guests in.

Corporate radio effectively killed rock music radio in Boston. It's rather depressing. Thanks CBS and Clear Channel!

Although Boston.com bought up a bunch of WFNX employees and now they have their own web based radio station, which is all right.

I still listen to WBRU in the car here, because they are a weird hybrid of college station/non-profit but commercial. Even then they have a rather repetitive playlist, but it's partially the listeners fault because I hear the requests when they come in and the 'top request' countdown on friday nights. They do play an hour every night of deeper cuts and a half hour of local band stuff, which is usually awesome.

Everything else sucks. =(
you should be listening to MBR and ZBC. Breakfast of Champions on Mbr is still pretty good.

Since my wife is a pop music aficionado I don't mind so much. It's a weird thing when your musical tastes start to intermingle with your significant other. When it gets to be too obnoxious I do flip it over to the college jazz station.

I have noticed though that more "indie" type bands are getting mainstream radio play. Lumineers, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros , Fun... etc. These guys beat the hell out of the boy band phenomenon of the early 2000's.

Been listing to the pod or pandora quite a bit lately, One of the most frustrating things about the radio are the adds. Why so many horrible adds? Not to mention the same tired playlist.

I've stopped listening to most radio stations in the UK for the same reason. I'm sick of the tunes that are always playing. Some old dudes crying about their payphones etc.

I stick to classic FM. Less annoying.
