At least Umbreon has some sort of use depending on what meta you're playing. Flareon just... doesn't do anything.

Only in the 'Looking Cool' metagame. Way too limited of a movepool, walled by a bunch of stuff, free switch in to any Fighting type with Guts (or anything with Guts for that matter). I only view things with VGC goggles, but the only reason Umbreon hangs around in Smogon UU is because people like its look. It's like Vire in OU in 4th Generation.

I don't know what they like about him over on Smogon, but I liked using him to stall for a while.

I mean they're both bottom rung, but Umbreon almost has a niche. Almost.

Speaking of metagames, did any evolution of old pokemon in Gen 4 turn out good? With the exception of Magnezone? I'm taking about tangrowth, Porygon Z, Vire etc...

All of the eevee forms are cursed with tiny movepools. Vaporeon and Jolteon have the stats to succeed despite this, but for the most part the rest do not. Even so, I seem to recall a lot of Jolteon movesets that include HP-Ice or HP-Grass.

Weavile turned out pretty OK.

Jolteon thankfully has the stats to back it up and Pure Water typing is so much better than pure Dark typing (with no attack stat) it's not even funny. Espeon is really the only one with anything of note in its movepool.

I always hope they expand the Eevee movepools through Move Tutors, but they never seem interested in doing so.

They're all sort of viable in different ways. Weavile suffers from not having very strong base attacks on its moves, but is a good revenge killer / useful Fake Out Pokemon in VGC. Porygon Z hits like a ton of bricks, but is just under where it needs to be speed wise. Tangrowth is incredibly bulky and actually hits hard. More people should use it. Magmortar has a great movepool, but pure Fire typing / so-so speed holds it back. Vire received his precious more powerful physical Electric move, but he's still a bit underwhelming, since he is lower than a lot of Pokemon.. and can't OHKO a lot of walls that can KO him back.

The good:

Gliscor's still top-tier in almost every context, and he keeps getting new toys. Togekiss doesn't get the same amount of love, but it can hit really hard and has a great variety of moves (and a few annoying options too) so it can hold its own. Roserade is a great annoyance and can set up Toxic Spikes, so that's always welcome. Mamoswine's got a lot of power and some good STAB options so he ends up just fine usually.

The bad:

Porygon-Z is kind of hindered by his typing moreso than anything. If not for the fighting weakness he'd probably be up there with the big boys. Tangrowth is kind of the same, being an awkward defensive... thing. If not for the weaknesses it gets from grass it'd probably be rocking out on top thanks to regenerator. Electivire needs to switch in to an electric attack to gain a motor drive boost, otherwise his lackluster speed is going to massacre him, and even then almost any team is going to have something that can take his hits and OHKO him with Earthquake. Magmortar has a Stealth Rock weakness, Gallade's typing and lack of bulk do him no favors. Weavile's alright but gets hit pretty hard by a lot of top-tier threats. Leafeon is decent in sun, Glaceon is kind of weak but has a niche on hail teams. Honchkrow and Mismagius are alright, but they're outclassed. Yanmega has too many common weaknesses and not enough power to compensate.

The ugly:

Lickilicky and Rhyperior are both terrible. Probopass is eugh. Ambipom doesn't have much of a right to exist.

Lickilicky is actually a pretty nice Pokemon and 'the best' user of Cloud Nine in VGC, for my money. He can be built with enough bulk to survive things like Dragon Gem Draco Meteor from Latios and Rain boosted Surfs, while eating things like four Excadrill Earthquakes without issue, and he is the one true viable user of Explosion.

Nerfing Rain / Sand can benefit a lot of Pokemon, especially if they're depending on Swift Swim / Sand Rush to win. You can also use him for general speed control with Icy Wind and Bulldoze. His attack stat leaves something to be desired, but without any investment Normal Gem boosted STAB Explosion will rip apart any Pokemon that doesn't resist it.

Rhyperior on the other hand is inferior to his pre-evolution now, thanks to Eviolite and not really gaining much state wise.

One more positive point on Tangrowth is Rage Powder, and being the physically bulkiest Pokemon to have it. It makes setting up in doubles much easier when its attracting all the Fake Outs that do nothing and Taunts.

Oh.. Togekiss is my favourite new 4th Generation evolution though. It can run any purpose you want on a team. Spread status, setup with Nasty Plot, run a Scarf, run Specs, be a wall. Follow Me and instant Recovery with one of the best abilities in the game. Bonus points for not being ugly like Togetic.

I had trouble remembering what Lickilicky was capable of, since I rarely see him. Looking over his movepool he has a lot of neat options, and being able to stop weather abusers for a bit is pretty nice. A pity it's so ugly.

You could probably run something defensive on Probopass too, in retrospect. Set up stealth rock and spread paralysis, then volt switch on a fighting switch-in.

Are those balls?

What???????

On off-topic: I've been replaying Sapphire because I wanted a Kyogre (and Latias, and...) and I have remembered how I hate the last part of the game (Victory Road + Pokémon League). Thanks to that I appreciate the new EXP system even more. I hope these games have good pacing as Black/White (no level spikes).

meh I'm the opposite. We're not talking design-wise right?

I love how there's a level spike in RSE. That gen still has the best E4 and Victory Road no questions asked.
5th gen is about in the middle for me. Not too hard, not too easy.

2nd gen was the worst.
The worst level scaling system I've ever seen in an RPG. Worst endgame ever. (During and after the Pokemon League)

Now that I think about it, the problem I have with the Victory Road is that the majority of pokémon you battle before it are water pokémon, meaning that pokémon weak to water enter it underleveled.

I like my Ludicolo and it's the first time I use one, but I was impressed how bad was Lombre's movepool. I had to survive with Bullet Seed for the first five gyms!

I think I'd like an evolution for Torkoal.

So the next piece of XY news should come with news on the summer movie in February, right?

Me too. Love Torkoal.

He always had a bit of a train motif to him (especially in the show, he made a train whistle whenever he shot smoke from his shell), so I'd like to see them expand on that.
