EVO 2K13 Player's Choice: Donate money to breast cancer and get your favorite game in

Yeah, Smash is out, there's no way it's going to happen now, especially since they shortened the deadline. The voice actor thing reeled Skullgirls a ton of money, but Smash really only has the fans to support and not the company itself so although the Smash community is larger, but getting voice actors from the game as a prize worked a lot better.

I think it still has a chance!

The people who overreacted are definitely the vocal minority, do not let them represent the players who actually attend tournaments regularly.

Yeah I dont mean Smash fans as the general base, that includes me as well. Im talking about the people who thinks that making fun of a game = killing your dog

Ugh, Ravi, why do you have to apologize? If they cant take the slightest joke thats their fault, not yours ...

The whole thing got out of control, so I felt it was the right thing to do.

...Also, Mike was super-pissed at me, even though he knew I meant it as a joke.

Also, whats this Im reading about some people saying they want their money back if their game of choice doesnt make it? Scum.

Seriously? That's not cool, if true.

It's for charity, and it's been stated from the very beginning that the money is gone once donated.

So now that Skullgirls is ahead, what happened with that guy who was having an emotional breakdown when Melee was leading? Has he received delivery of his 72 virgins yet?

Always funny to see how hyper sensitive Smash fans are, call it a non-fighting game and its like you called somebody the n word or something.

Well now that's just missing the point entirely. :|

Lol, this. How's Brandx doing?

Also speaking of party games, I wanna see the NintendoLand Luigi's Mansion game at Evo. That would be the most hype tournament ever.

I'm not sure you're serious or not, but it's always seemed weird to me that any Smash game was ever taken as some super deep serious fighter.

How is it weird? You have the options to turn some items on/off or all of them off since the very first game. The very first game happens to have lots of hitstun, allowing for variable and free juggle combos with memorable stages like Hyrule Castle and Dreamland. There's effective ways to keep players off the stages in both the first two games, there's actual strategy involved in all of it. I could go on about what else, but it all boils down to the game giving you a breadth of options. It's simple on the surface, deep if you dig into it. That's how Melee has survived for so long, the game keeps on giving players new things each year.

How is it, in any sense of the word, weird? When people say that, I find that weird.

People take Mario Kart seriously and yet nobody finds that weird.

There have been a lot of great party games that have come out recently that I hope make it into UFGT's Mystery Game Tournament or something. Catherine, Nintendoland games, Trials EVO with bailout finish option on, SFxTK, etc. I think it could be awesome.

No, that is really weird, considering how bad of a competitive game Mario Kart is, where the most optimal position to be is always #2. Few games punish you for being in the lead as much as Mario Kart does.

You can find super serious play of nearly fucking anything. I'm honestly not surprised by what I hear anymore.

Pokemon

Fucking Devil May Cry apparently has some sort of competitions ffs

Smash is a fighting game because of Captain Falcon's knee.

Just wanted to share my apology for that tweet last night:

To all #SSBM fans: I never intended that tweet to be received the way it was, and I apologize if I offended your community.

It was meant as a joke and in good fun, but I wasn't aware of all the history there as it clearly touched a nerve.

I thought a little salt would liven things up, and, well... it did that, just not in the way I expected. And I sincerely apologize.

We're going to be doing everything we can to keep our lead, but everyone at Lab Zero is just incredibly happy and humbled.

This "rivalry" wouldn't exist if our fans hadn't pulled through for us, and even if we "lose" we will still be in their debt.

So, again - I sincerely apologize for my statement and how it made you feel, and I hope there isn't any lasting bad blood here.

As I've said before, I'm a big fan of Smash Bros. and Nintendo, and so is the team. I got carried away and I hope you can forgive.

So I hope that clears everything up.

I'm not apart of the smash community myself, but I am a huge Melee fan and play it all the time as it is my favorite fighting game. I could tell it was a joke myself, but I understand why someone might get upset since it seems a lot of people are really passionate about these games getting into EVO and may not see it as a joke when people are so 'serious' about it.

That's just how it is when there are things at stake, but if it wasn't for all that and the badblood smash bros gets in the fighting game community, I don't think it would have mattered. It certainly doesn't matter to me.

I'm not counting Smash Bros. out, so you guys definitely shouldn't, either.

I think it still has a chance!

I'm not too optimistic, but I guess hope is still hope at the end of the day.

Yeah I remember NSMB Wii appearing during that mystery game tournament, I would have destroyed everyone in that.

Mostly because no one there knew what they were doing.

There is only one thing we, as the Melee community can do.

Get help from this man:

If Skullgirls wins I should go to EVO and sign up for the game as "Professor Beef"
EMP|Esports Beef
I'm signing up as NeoGaf | Professor Beef
I'm fairly certain I could sue for libel if this happens. >:(

YOU'RE ALL JERKS
I remember in Evo 09 I shared a hotel room with Mr Beef.

he's never been seen since...

his friends truly do miss him.
If I had the money, I would go again in a heartbeat and eat pho with all ya'll. :(

This is not true, at least not in MKWii. Second place and back is vulnerable to thundercloud, and there are actually multiple levels of first place with different levels of safety. First place wth no separation is dangerous. First place with significant separation is relatively safe, because you are free from the item storm and one blue shell isn't enough to make you lose it. Second place can have difficulty catching up because third and foruth are right behind. First place with ample separation is optimal, as the deck is now stacked in your favor no matter what happens. Also, mushroom counters blue shell.

That said, in full races where separation isn't forthcoming and everyone is about equal you're likely going to get fucked somehow regardless of where you are.

I really don't know what Smash can do to make up the difference in numbers.

Welp. Lol

I still think a last minute snipe is going to determine who wins this.

One thing that does seem clear to me: I'm not going to get into whether Smash is a FG or not, but the Smash community is not part of the traditional Capcom-centric FGC. At the majors I went to, I see very little interaction between the Smash folks and other folks, they pretty much hole off into their own area, and neither side really wants to deal with the others, except for a few folks. At least that's the impression I've received.

That said, I'd make a similar argument for the VF community, but for many obvious reasons VF comm doesn't get the hate Smashers do. Most of your hardcore American VF players don't play other fighters either (a few do, and unlike Smash there is a mutual respect)

Pokemon

You need like a Ph.D in some higher math to understand Pokemon. It's incredibly how deep that game is.

Melee is sort of similar. Simplistic coat on a pretty complex game.

By higher math you mean primary school right? Sure you have to be good on your multiplication tables but come on.

Times change though. As the fgc in general gets bigger it is only natural it will become more accepting.

There is a chance all those smash players might see and migrate to a real game too :P

Yeah I'm riding under the assumption that when its competitive, things are close and one guy isn't just steamrolling everyone else like the AI, especially when there is rubber banding (which I believe is present in MP too?). It's just the game is stacked towards reshuffling the positions in the race often because of how the power ups are distributed.

Rubber banding in MKWii has limits. You can build separation even in Mirror, but to do this you need to actually be time trial good. This precludes all but the highest top speed vehicles from consideration except the Spear(never use this in multi). Characters also provide stat bonuses and auto provides a top speed bonus at the expense of boosting. When I played MKWii I preferred Daisy-Sneakster-Auto but strictly speaking it's inferior to Funky-Flame Runner-Manual.

Anyway, that's actually where second place in multi can fuck you, because getting caught dealing with items leaves you no hope of catching up with a player doing a near ideal run. There isn't any rubber banding in multi outside the specific item probabilities given to the various placings. Like I said before, thundercloud fucks second if it can't be passed on, despite the temporary speed boost.

Haha, but yeah, there was a period of time where MKWii was the only Wii game I played. I probably suck now but at the time I triple starred the entire game and had a 9999 rating online.

He slowed his roll. We got some nice trolling out of all this publicity though. SRK was a complete war zone. I think I had to put on a firesuit just to browse the place and Smashboards was nuts.

Respectable people on both sides acted mature though. Lots of friendly Melee guys came over to dismiss the bullshit being flung on both sides.

The thing is Smash got big enough, early enough that it didn't need the FGC, so it developed its own culture which is separate from the FGC. Add to that being on a Nintendo console and you get a situation where there is very little overlap between the communities.
