Appreciating the Underappreciated: Tekken Tag Tournament 2 Soundtrack

Game awards have come and gone and I still think the Tekken Tag 2 soundtrack has gone largely unnoticed by the gaming media and the gaming public at large.

I have to first thank Nert for making this post in the the Neogaf Official Game Soundtracks of the Year 2012 thread.

Following this, I also want to post a review of the soundtrack by Don from squareenixmusic. It's really well written and nicely accounts for the variety of tracks. It does, however, lack a review of the tracks that were added later on in the console version.

Following this, I want to (myself) stress how amazingly well done the soundtrack in this game is. It marries different music genres and brings them together in very unique ways. There's a dubstep track with orchestral chorus. There's a blending of piano and guitar with electronic beats. There are tracks with very gripping chanting. And there are tracks where the lyrics intentionally do not make any sense. It's all done extremely well and the soundtrack team deserves all sorts of praise it can get.

Too Long;Didn't Read

Listen to some of this stuff.
Tulip Festival - (Note: Reach past the 0:50 second mark to please your ears).
Abyss of Time - (Note: Same as above - Reach past the 0:50 second mark)
Your Sunset - (EXCELLENT Music)
Tekstep Fountain (So good)
Piano Intro - Massive Mix (Beautiful)
High School Love - (Only on the Wii U)
What You Will See - (Reach 2:00 minute mark for epicness)
Sakura Schoolyard - (somewhat repetitive but amazing nonetheless)
Arena - (also repetitive but cool)

These are just some of the tracks. If you like these, listen to the rest of the soundtrack.

Yes!

I completely agree. That store music, the Your Sunset track I believe, is so good.

Didn't they have club nights leading up to the release of the game where only Tekken Tunes were played? I seem to recall seeing some happy DJ dude really cheesing it up on a livestream of one of the shows...

How could I forget the shopping music? I would just leave it there in the menu when I wasn't playing just to listen. So good.

Second OST of the year as well as second in my top 3 OSTs of the gen.

1. FFXIII
2. TTT2
3. FFXIII-2

As underrated as much as overrated Nier's is.

Favorite track remains Fontana Di Trevi. Dirty vocal dub-step sandwiched with swooning strings. Absolutely enchanting.

Your Sunset's just perfect instrumental hip-hop goodness. I can't stop listening to this shit!

This thread reminds me of another thread I need to do eventually.

It's not even underappreciated if you compare it to the current generation of FG soundtracks. TTT2's OST is the best. Too bad people are too scared to pick it up and rather thrash the game. :/

Fallen Garden is the best main menu song EVER if you set it up in Tekken Tunes, btw. :D

I liked Your Sunset for shopping but overall I didn't like the tracks for the fighting stages and prefer Tekken 6's tracks over Tag's. Overall I was highly disappointed with Tag's soundtrack.

The TTT2 soundtrack is good, I dunno why people are not appreciating it more but I like it a lot.

Favorite tracks are:

Piano intro(of course)
Aim to win(player select)
Tekstep fountain
Condor Canyon
The strongest iron arena
Snow Castle(mundus)
Moonlit Wilderness - D.T.O mix
Its not a tuna(bountiful sea)
Far east mix(Hall of Judgement)
Sadistic X-mas
Abyss of Time
Un Deux Trois
Fiji -Paraiso Mix
School -After School Mix- (Sakura Schoolyard)

I really need to listen to the tracks...most of the time I play this with other music playing but the Polish Carnival music was really my favorite track.

I was playing this with some friends the other day and found the soundtrack hilarious, but maybe it's not my type of music.

I rented TTT2 but I'll be buying it soon, it's a great game. Although yeah, Fallen Garden was indeed my favorite song in the game.

Amazing soundtrack. I agree with so many of the tracks people listed. My Favorites that weren't listed:

Appreciate these guys:

I think it was in Germany? Unfortunately you can't find a complete archive of it online.

EDIT: it also produced this golden moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uO4SKdyO8xI

its underappreciated? thats a shame since its amazing.
I would definitely say so.
Don't think it was even nominated by any gaming media site/magazine for best soundtrack. Also don't think its had enough exposure.

Wow, didn't even know this existed.

I will try this.

The Moonlit Wilderness and Snow Castle remixes weren't as good as the originals :(

I can agree with this. Original Moonlit Wilderness is especially too good.

How could I forget the shopping music? I would just leave it there in the menu when I wasn't playing just to listen. So good.

I spend more time in customization just because of that track, haha.

I concur that TTT2 has a good OST. My favorites are Your Sunset, Tulip Festival (which I had has the main menu music for a while), and whatever the online lobby music is.

While I take issue with the TTT2 mix of Moonlit Wilderness, the soundtrack otherwise blew me away.

The thing that gets me is how "confident" it sounds. The music totally supports the overall aesthetic and mood of the game - the neon-lit arena framework, almost celebratory. In my mind it returns Tekken to the original motif of "rave war". It is a full bore rave war now.

The new console music is also really great, especially the magic show stage which is kinda incredible both visually and aurally.

Yeah it stands by itself. I still think Capcom remixed the TTT theme better however

when a game let's you upload and play your own music instead of the actual game soundtrack, it is unconsciously shooting itself in the foot music-wise. What's the point of spending money on making a soundtrack if a player can simply upload his own stuff? No matter how good the music is, it won't beat personally selected tracks that the player wants from their own music collection.

It's sad that ttt2 did this as I think its soundtrack is nice. Take pride in your work namco! Don't just let people ignore it to listen to rollin' by limp bizkit on repeat!

Awesome soundtrack, and even better, it works excellently in game. I've played the hell out of the Piano Intro, Your Sunset, and What You Will See.

Hrm.. I have to admit, while being a TTT2 fan, I did not care that much for the soundtrack. It's not bad, there are a few nice tunes in there, but I found most of them subpar and the whole thing just lacks a bit of identity. I liked Tekken 5's soundtrack much better for example, though Tekken 3 remains the best for me.

I do have to add that the Logistics remix of Night Falls is pretty damn excellent. It's on the official TTT2 remix cd.

sorry to rain on your parade, but I'm gonna use this thread for my favourite Tekken OST, Tekken 3:
Bryan's Theme
Forest Law's Theme
King's Theme
Nina's Theme

shout outs to jin's theme on the TTT1 arcade too

Tekken 3 soundtrack is amazing as well. The whole series soundtrack is amazing.

It plays during the second half of the credits. It's a great remix of the Tekken 2 credits music.

Speaking of remixes, I once ran into this random dude's twitch stream and heard this pretty awesome remix he made for the Tag 2 remix of Jin's T3 theme.

A remix of a remix. I really like this A LOT.

That could be part of it. But 95% of my tracks are still Tekken music so I don't know.

This soundtrack is so good goddamn

the rest of the genre is clearly not even trying

?! it just keeps giving

clicked around the playlist and found this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezxvnMFiZ-k

WHAT

my inner child just did a Tekken 2 style jump into space

GotY

GotY

a thousand times GotY

And now I'm hearing things I didn't even know existed. The game that keeps on giving.

Good soundtrack, worst soundtrack of all Tekken games.

When I say worst, please understand that I mean, "not as good as the other Tekken games".
