Companies can have stipulations when it comes to this sort of thing. Erin Fitzgerald(Parasoul's VA) was talking about this during the drive on Salty Cupcakes. I'm pretty sure Nintendo would end a smash VA that tried this.

Personally, I give a fuck less about who deserves it based on the history of a community, circumstances regarding the game, etc. and all the shit outside of the donation drive itself. Whoever donates most for a good cause deserves it, end of story. No game is entitled to more outside of that one criterion, the only one that matters.

As a person who knows Skullgirls vs. Smash is a somewhat "David vs. Goliath" scenario, while I also think Smash would actually be "more entertaining" than Skullgirls (depending who will actually play at EVO), I want Skullgirls to win for the following reasons:
I like Smash. I've openly said that plenty of times on SRK, while people were like, "SMASH ISN'T A REAL FIGHTER!" and shit. Do I believe that? Yes. Because I always said: "You Jebaileys need to stop acting like y'all never fucked with Smash before. It IS a fighting game, but it's NOT traditional." Hell, I have all three Smash games, and to be honest? I don't fucking like the Wii U, but if SSB4 is godlike? I'll buy it. Straight up.
However, I'm looking at this from a "community perspective" and fools can't get mad, because Skullgirls' community is (surprisingly) huge and Hollywood. Personally, I have a bad feeling about Smash coming back to EVO, just for the stupid shit they've done, but that's just me making excuses on their history, because I just want more girls to be at EVO.
tl;dr
Let's go, Based Broads! (Smash is okay, but I don't want to fuck with the community, because the lack of girls)
- The Based Broads crew are legitimate cool people.
- Smash has/had plenty of other huge tournaments, while Skullgirls could have its very first shot (could be last) at EVO; Mike Z's dream.
- I personally can't get "hype" for Smash, because I always hated "competitive Smash." (If you want to see me "casual" as fuck, play me in Smash or Mario Kart)
- If Skullgirls win, that means there's more women (Voice Actresses, Cosplayers, fangirls, and their friends) for KingofSarus to hit on. I rather smell perfumes than smelly ass Gamecube controllers.

Instead of getting to know the people and know how they act you instead choose to do the typical "OMG, I'm not part of their circle and anything they do to enjoy themselves is annoying to me" approach. Perhaps, but a lot of charities do what they have to do to motivate people to donate, and people wouldn't be throwing money without some level of understanding for where it goes, in most cases knowing it goes to charity enables people to spend the money or else they'd just let the politics work themselves out.
