Why does flushing a disc in a toilet work?

One time my father-in-law dropped his phone in a lake, so we put it in a gallon Ziploc bag full of rice then flushed it in the toilet.

What were you trying to accomplish? I understand the theory behind a disc in the toilet but what is even going on here.

Actually, I have heard success stories of people fixing their wet cell phones by doing exactly as this man described.

It's more legit than flushing a CD in the toilet.

Wow. You could dunk it in the sink or a bucket if you really felt the need. The toilet adds nothing to this. It's water.

What in the hell? I've never heard this before.

WAT

EDIT: I guess it isn't as gross for most people as it would be for me, since I live in a house with fourteen other people, so I wouldn't dream of touching anything that's been in the toilet. But I guess all that rushing water would be effective at cleaning...?

What have you been smoking?

That is crazy shit.

Sure, sure.

The fuck?

Is this some new bizarre phenomenon that kids do these days or something?

Is this a weird boiling Xbox discs reference?

Where did you get the idea for this?

lol what?? Ive NEVER heard this

Cant tell is this a legit topic? If it is...O.o

The fuck dude?

Wat?

I've used warm water and dish soap on some of my DVDs but toilet...uhh nope!

What, what, WHAT?!?!

What the fuck are they putting in our toilet water these days?

lol wut? Never heard of anybody doing this, wtf...

You people need to get some exposure to the way modern technology works...

Can't believe you haven't heard of this.

I think one of the funniest 'gamer remedies' I have ever attempted was the hair dryer trick on my old fat PS3. Lo and behold, it worked long enough for me to transfer my data to my current slim. Was laughing my ass off while doing it.

I bet the very keyboard that most of you are typing your posts on is less sanitary than any CD would be after flushing it in a (already flushed) toilet.

The proven science behind it is due to very tiny remnants from piss, shit, and vomit combined with the pressurized, funneling water makes any abstractions on the surface of the disk vanish.

If you're insinuating that most of us masturbate and share the load on the keyboard I'd like to think most people have enough decency not to do that. If you're just making the point that hands are dirty I wash my own hands pretty regularly when I'm done eating and such.

Um.

I have boiled discs - had to in order to play PSO, even after returning it and getting a second copy it didn't work until I did that. And toothpaste worked on a couple of really bad used games.

But toilet flushing? That's new...

Seriously I dares you guys to try it. It worked for Sunshine long enough for me to get passed the part that always froze. Now I can play past the tutorial.

The Wii U discs are smoother so I'm not sure. The PS3 50gb blu-rays are too heavy due to the amount of data on them so they won't flush, trust me, I'm a professional.

I still have no idea what is going on in this thread 3 pages later... I know people were boiling OG Xbox discs, but did this problem also occur with 360 discs? I rarely have scratched discs, but if there is a deep scratch, it is there for good, otherwise the local video place will clean them up for like 50 cents a pop.

Also for reassurance, I flushed Mario Party 7 (always froze on the loading screen) now it works. I should have taken a video or some shit.
I'd be real money this guy has never flushed a game, he's just trying to get idiots to do it.

I guarantee I am not. I will find a fucked up disc somewhere, and get a video of it.

I've heard that dropping a disc in boiling water helps too.

I wouldn't try it.

I've done boiling with mixed results. Sometimes it fixed the problem, other times it didn't have any effect. If you're having problems with a disc reading I do recommend it. Boiling never made the issue worse, so I had nothing to lose. Boil some water, put the disc in (read side down), take it out after 6-8 seconds, and gently dry it.

I've also tried the toothpaste method, but that didn't help.
