The Giant Bomb Quick Look Thread 2

I hope Brad gives Walking Mars a go - if he has not already. A Quick Look would be nice too. Maybe a Vinny lead Quick Look with Brad, as it seems more his type of game.

Nice to see Brad pushing to get iOS QLs on the site - at leasy that's how it looks from the outside.

Waking Mars

Also on Steam. Not all that great, I liked Aquaria better.

Man, watching that QL reminds me how much I want Kingdom Rush 2...

Tower defence is still the worst genre.

"There's an anti-tower defence sentiment in this office."
Another reason to love Giantbomb.

Of course, Vinny's point about how TD has changed and evolved with hybridisation of genres is true. Something like Kingdom Rush represents the very worst of the genre for me. Completely braindead, basically non-existent AI, few options, watching the game play itself at points and balancing that's aimed at making you spend real money on top of the money you paid to get the game.

Something like Orcs Must Die is totally fine in comparison. Of course, that's barely tower defence anymore, but you know. :p

If they're going to be doing quick looks of old games at least pick good ones, or ones worth watching a quick look of. This is neither.

Don't worry though guys, we're getting another iOS quick look tomorrow!

Tower defense games are dumb. I remember playing Pixel Junk Monsters years back and thought it was stupid. My friends loved it, but they also loved Duke Nukem Forever. With all the TD games on iPhone I thought I'd give it a go again. Nope. Still trash. It might work as a mechanic in a game where it is just one of several, but as the sole point? No thanks.

I wonder who's "idea" it was to start doing iOS quicklooks. I did enjoy Tested's App of the Day, but we'll see how this pans out...Looks like Hundreds is the next iOS game up for a quicklook. I personally was less than impressed by that one (it wasn't bad, it was just 'ok', but every site under the sun talked about it like Hundreds was the greatest iOS game yet).

I really liked the hour or so I played on my Mac. Really atmospheric. The iOS version was updated with the voice over, right? It really added a lot.

coming along quite nicely, along with a Steam version of the first one (if/when it gets greenlit)

I had no idea a second one was in the works. Still haven't completed the first one 100% yet, probably my most played iOS game though.

edit: game looks rough on the iPhone, such a pleasure on the iPad.

What is the neogaf app?
I have the secondapp link still on my iDevice but wish it would go directly to neogaf instead of telling me to use the mobile site.

If you just make a homescreen shortcut out of m.neogaf.com it should automatically give you the nice app icon.

Wait, so Kingdom Rush must've added all this microtransaction stuff somewhat recently? Because it wasn't on my iPad version till I updated the game just now.

Most don't agree with you. Kingdom Rush is mega popular.

The only ios game I'd like them to make a QL of is The Room. Maybe Middle Manager of Justice.

Aside from that, I can't think of too many entertaining ones tbh.

I am going against GAF opinion here, but there is some good stuff on there, to be fair. If they were happy to do slightly older games, I still enjoy stuff like...

Beat Sneak Bandit (Rhythm / Stealth Game - you have to move to the beat)

Continuity 2 (Puzzle Game - slidie and rearrange tiles to traverse levels)

Unify (Block Dropping Game - you play two sides at once)

Colorbind (Puzzle / Maze Game - arrange and overlap strands of paper to solve stuff)

...I have not got a new iOS game in about 6 months though, so I am out of the loop on newer stuff, so have no opinions of newer "interesting" stuff. However, when they get around to doing QL of newer stuff, then I will most certainly be watching :)

Warcraft 3 TD maps with mazing are the real TD experience and Orcs Must Die! is basically that in third person. Fuck TD games without mazing.

I wonder if he bought enough dongles to do a Space Team TNT. I guess that would result in many dropped iPhones by being tethered so close to the capture equipment. So now I definitely want to see it.

There's some cool iOS stuff out there for sure, I'm totally all for them Quick Looking stuff that catches their interest. That said, I'm finding this Kingdom Rush Quick Look incredibly boring. Tower Defense doesn't really make good watching, I guess.

I used to buy/download iOS games pretty often but have found I've stopped because I realised I was typically grabbing them and then not really playing them at all in favour of playing things on my consoles/handhelds (like I normally do :P ).

Also, you know, there'll be more games on iOS, so it'll get more by default just down to sheer mass.

Sure, most of them are garbage, but 1% of a fuckload is still a sizeable amount.

In my experience, the "OH MAN THERE IS A HUGE WORLD OF AMAZING iOS GAMES OUT THERE" reverie starts to wear off after a while and you end up just playing the same word games forever. Not because the other games are bad, but because when you pull your phone out for a minute or two, you don't load up something that requires remembering where you were.

I'm not a tower defence fan so I'm not interested in Kingdom Rush specifically, but I think the general idea of iOS quick looks is a good one. There are enough exclusive games on the platform to justify some video exposure from the site.
