Fire Emblem Awakening Review Thread | 9s, 9s (almost) everywhere

I thought Super Paper Mario and Paper Mario: Sticker Star were great if not excellent.

It's common to see disliked games called "bad games" by disappointed fans, when what actually represents a bad game is far and away a different thing.

A "bad" Intelligent Systems game is better than what most could pull off.

Anyway, great to see Fire Emblem getting some recognition, though Awakening's leap in quality and production values sure as hell deserve that recognition.

Isn't Awakening like, with no little irony being a portable game, the most lavish Fire Emblem?

If the review scores keep up it's the best reviewed game this year so far. I sadly suspect it will be long forgotten by the time GOTY 2013 rolls around, especially with next-gen looming on the horizon.

9/10?

Those are good odds!

DAMMIT!

Lol too good (and true :'( )

Is Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones a good game to try out this series with?

I mean I already have it on my 3DS as part of the Ambassador program, but I haven't actually tried it out yet.

It's a solid entry, but I'd track down a copy of the game before it, aptly named "Fire Emblem." There's a little more depth to Sacred Stones, but FE is a far better package in terms of story and memorable characters. I'd also recommend sticking to the portable FE's before you tackle a console release.

yup. easiest FE to date, but still damn entertaining

I'm playing it as well on my 3DS (ambassador here too) and I think I'll just pretend to be playing Awakening

Sacred Stones is a far more gentle introduction to the series. Awakening so far for me (only Chapter 5) seems to be going down the same path. In FE7, you had to abuse the Arena to dig up extra EXP, in Sacred Stones and Awakening, all those random spawning battles on the world map means you don't really have to worry about Exp hogs.

Easy restart: L & R plus start. Saves you a few seconds from rebooting the game, so there's another minor minor complaint gone.

I'm really pleasantly surprised at the originality of the music. The one that sticks out in my head is the tune that runs when you're prepping for battle. Doesn't sound like Fire Emblem, but it's really really good.

I was pretty sure that i would be this game... Now I'm DAMN sure and can't wait for monday to come. I'm downloading the game from the eShop.

So I knew that this game was going to be good, but the raving reviews in the OP are driving me nuts. I really should have had my own 3DS by now huh?

Nothing big. Most people probably figured that out by just playing the demo.

It's really no surprise.

If it's no surprise then you should have no problem articulating what exactly is the spoiler that you're referring to, as I asked for.

I've always really enjoyed Sacred Stones. It's a bit of an anomaly in the series, sharing some similarities with Fire Emblem Gaiden on the NES, but definitely an excellent entry. If you already own it, I would say why not? Pretty much all Fire Emblem games are great! (aside from the DS entry)

I'm an embassador too and played it for a bit, it didn't grab me... but I enjoyed the Awakening demo for some reason. Maybe it's the pairing system, it was interesting trying different combinations.

Is Awakening a good game to try if you're not good at SRPGs?

Good to see that it's being received pretty well. Sure, no review would have changed my mind in buying it at this point (unless it turned out to be like Operation Darkness bad), but hey.

The thing is that there are not so few people out there that are allergic to any and all things that could be considered "spoilers".

It's just
Masked Marth isn't actually Marth, but a girl, oh no!

Casual Mode is supposed to be the thing that allows anyone to play through the game just fine, so the game should, yeah.

It offers a Casual mode, which means there is no perma-death on the battle field. So you can play with more peace of mind. So while perma-death is crucial for me (it makes you take an entirely different mind set when you play), people that are not so good at sRPGs should take advantage of Casual mode and give it a try.

The Gametrailers review is great (as always) and really informative about the game. Its one spoiler (which they show/bring up at least a few times in the video review) is something I basically guessed beforehand anyways.

Namely that Marth
is not actually Marth and is actually a girl.
I am guessing the game does want that to be some sort of twist but even based on how the game has been marketed it has been pretty obvious, imo.

Ah, I see.

Yeah, the game itself (at least as far as the demo goes) really does throw out the implications for the player to think about, and then there's the GT review that is absurdly...non subtle. I don't like that myself.

game is p. amazing, right behind Kid icarus Uprising as my favorite 3DS game so far.

It really is the definite Fire Emblem experience

I see what you mean. Said spoiler is very pivotal to the plot and it's not revealed far into the game either, so this is kind of expected unfortunately. I was just watching the video and I personally dislike how they mess around with that.

Fire Emblem: Awakening does an awful lot right, and seeing some of the things it incorporates from the rest of the series is a treat for veterans. Whether Nintendo's positioning of the game as a tentpole release in North America will pay dividends remains to be seen — just because this is more accessible than most for newbies does not make it any less of a tactical game, hardly the best-selling genre in the gaming world. Awakening is nevertheless a genuine treat for anyone seeking a deeply rewarding tactical title on the 3DS, and a fine return of the series to the English-speaking world after the last game missed out.

This is hardly what I'd call a 'tentpole' release...

Did 8-4 translate this game?

Yes they did, but Treehouse did the actual localization as far as I know.

I can confirm now 8-4 actually did do the full localization, under the watchful eye (as always) of the Treehouse (specifically the man, the myth, the legend: Rich Amtower). I can't lie -- we worked -really- hard on it and are super-proud of how it turned out, really hope all you guys and gals enjoy it...

BTW, you might have seen us mention it on Twitter but we did an interview/studio visit with the Awakening developers at Nintendo/Intelligent Systems, including some fan questions, that should go up someplace soon-ish. "Please look forward to it," as they say ;)

Is that an Iwata Asks? Can't wait!

Yeah, I am probably the least sensitive person when it comes to spoilers, but even I was surprised how bluntly they show it.

That's completely different form the "when you don't know about it you won't realize it" moments in other trailers.

Sweet, thanks for the confirmation. Looking forward to the game and the interview.

I like your guy's use of the word dastard. :)

Woo-hoo! Can't wait for it!

Ah, I see. Thanks for clarifying. As obligated, thank you and the rest of 8-4 very much for the work you've done for the game! It's fantastic from what I've seen so far.

I disagree, it absolutely is. It's their big Q1 game. Big marketing push behind it including commercials on TV, new 3DS bundle with the game included, available both retail and digital. And it has Marth/really pushing that fact since everyone knows him from Smash Bros.

They are definitely treating this (a first for Fire Emblem, at least in the west) as a tentpole 3DS release.

Which is really exciting and very out of character for NOA. You would think NOA would be more thrilled about the release of Braing Age.
