VGleaks: Orbis Unveiled! [Updated]

Explain then why does Crysis 2 look better than Crysis 3 though? (on Consoles of course)

IIRC PC crowd was mad that C2 used so many narrow corridors to make it work on consoles and Crytek promised to make C3 more open again. Obviously hurts performance and thus graphics took a hit on consoles.

On the topic of controllers, I hope, that they keep the player's performance in mind too, and they have data proving the DS4 being better than the DS3 on some games.

Like on FPS, you could have a DS4 and DS3 player, and see if there is any difference in performance.

I like the controller

um, where does the disc go? I see a slot at the bottom, but it doesn't look anywhere deep enough to house a disc.

anyway, terrible mock up. don't particularly like the style or look of the console. the controller looks interesting though, but I would prefer one more shaped like the 360 controller, especially if it's not a break apart controller.

so, to all tech experts, how 'big' would be orbis/durango compared to actual consoles. Like WiiU? bigger? should sony have a power brick outside to make the console look more stylish (and probably cheaper too)?

My guess is that they will consume less power than PS3 and 360 did initially, but definitely a lot more than Wii U. Not more than 150 W I think. So the case will likely be a bit larger than the current Slim 360's and PS3's.
Personally I like internal power supplies better, so I hope they'll go for that, even if it makes the case a little bigger.

thanks!. I'd also like internal power supply better. I hope they make systems that look more like set top boxes or dvds than consoles.

I suggested that before and then someone pointed me to the BDXL specs which are only for recordable discs. ROM spec only seems to go up to the existing 50GB.

I don't know if there is any movement in the bluray partnership to expand the spec - considering 4k you'd think 100GB ROM would make sense (even allowing for h.265 size savings)

They won't. There is no practical way to stamp 100GB discs so they can't be mass produced with data on them, only blanks for home use. It would require all new investment in production hardware for 100GB, and it would never be commonplace enough to drive down costs like Blu-ray and DVD when they were introduced. Essentially 100GB BDXL-ROMs would be almost proprietary to Sony as they would be the only company to invest in making them at DADC given the expense and poor scope for profit.

You'd be surprised at how much companies like Sony care about that kind of stuff. Sure, feature set is important, but the experience is also key. I'd be surprised if the launch console is not designed to look premium class technology.

Th ps3 slim redesign forwent that to appear cheaper perhaps because it had a 'overpriced' and 'too expensive' stigma. Or maybe the company as as whole cared less about aesthetics than before.

Fortunately, whatever the reason, sony's latest designs, such as the Experia Z, and the tablets and bluray players. show them to be back on form.

would someone PLEASE remove the silly 'unveiled' and also the 'updated' words from the thread title? It is misleadingly disappointing.

What Sony 1st party are doing on a handheld:

E3 is going to be spectacular.

Too Bad Nintendo didn't come to grips with the GPGPU in the Wii U before the big boys joined the party because Sony already got a head start from working with the Cell & now the Vita so they are going to hit the ground running with the PS4. & MS devs should be pretty up to speed on next gen because of the Xbox 360 GPU.

imo they should leave 4K disc formats for future revisions i.e. a separate '4K' PS4 Slim SKU with BDXL or whatever

No point jacking up the price for something so few will use, especially when there's no 4K disc format standard yet.

Yes, sony mobile is in top form and i hope they nail it with Orbis. While i did not think original ps3 was beatiful , it looked like an expensive product (it was quite expensive obviously).

in the long run adding it to begin with will lower the price & make it useful to everyone & not just the people who has the upgraded hardware which would make BDXL something that the PS4 can't take full advantage of.

Reading both Orbis and Durante's leaked specs threads, seems like people have concluded that Durante is a more efficient architecture... Now why would that be?

Taking leaks as facts (just pretend that what we now so far is final):

* both use the same CPU
* Both use the same GPU technology
* Orbis seems to have a slighly faster GPU
* Orbis seems to have RAM almost 2.5 times as fast
* Durango has an esram module to help mitigate the slow RAM ( Is it impossible for this esram to make the whole system's ram faster or even on par with orbis?)
* Durango has double the RAM
* Orbis has a GPU like set of CUs to assist in special computation to release the burden on the CPU
* Durango has a Data Move Engine (is it a processor?)

From what I get both will be similar, now durango is more efficient because?

A) It costs less to manufacture (Those 32 MB don't sound cheap though) and will release at a lower price point.
B) it's easier to get the most out of the hardware ( but will programmers have to tweak code to take advantage of the 32 MB esram?)
C) The amount of RAM makes it a better system for games

I'm liking both systems so far, definetly getting both (I already have a Wii U)

Perhaps it's because people claim that devs say it's a wash. So people fill in the gaps. We'll know soon enough.

I wonder what [if any] android stuff will make it onto ps4? They say Sony has put a lot of effort into the android dev space.. Google now would be kinda cool. Or Google voice.

Maybe google TV too (Isn't it included in some Sony TVs?)

I am for a bigger physical bluray disk format, 1/4 to 1 inch bigger diameter should provide a nice bit of extra storage without making the disk or case too unwieldy. Casual ripping would be hard with no pc's have a bluray drive big enough to fit a new disk size, would also give an advantage over 720 having a bluray drive.

No thanks. And I think Sony would say no thanks to that too.

Regarding the PS4 controller, I only have three requests: make it bigger, change the analog stick placement, and change the d-pad style. They need to make controllers for us bigger folks. =p

Wow...PS3 Crysis 3....

Hopefully PS4 and it's more PC-like architecture will improve these games for developers like Crytek who know nothing optimizing their engine for consoles basically.

lol Is there a story or video behind this?

No, I don't see Vita outperforming these consoles in any meaningful way.

Going digital, you'd think Sony would want to limit developers to 50GB. Preferably much lower.

We don't know that it costs less to manufacture, have you taking into consideration agregated costs of kinect 2.0 hardware?, and how is Durango more efficient as a hardware based only in the manufacturing cost?
B) it's easier to get the most out of the hardware ( but will programmers have to tweak code to take advantage of the 32 MB esram?)

How do you know it will be easier to get most out of Durango's hardware?

C) The amount of RAM makes it a better system for games

lol no? DDR3 vs DDR5, have you be paying attention to this thread?

He was only asking because he doesn't know. Some people have (rightly or wrongly) been calling Durango more efficient and he only wants to know where that is coming from.

That design above is horrible. Controller is bad and the console is ugly as sin and entirely impractical because it has to be stood up right.

Some basic principals i think sony will strive for.

Slot loading disc drive
Minimalist design
Unusual quirk like how the PS3's are rounded
Very little on console branding Small PS4 or Sony logo
Mature looking. (in comparison to the 360 and 360 Slim the PS3's look fairly refined.
Matt finish
Hidden ports. Unlike the PS3 which has USB ports on display.

I agree with you and I know my tech stuff, believe me. Nonetheless concensus is Durante is more efficient and I can't find why or from what perspective

A) It costs less to manufacture (Those 32 MB don't sound cheap though) and will release at a lower price point.

Level of customization seems to be higher in Durango. Not to mention more specific parts (DME, eSRAM, etc.) make it more complex and expensive to produce.

B) it's easier to get the most out of the hardware ( but will programmers have to tweak code to take advantage of the 32 MB esram?)

It was stated numerous times that quality gap between Microsoft's tools and Sony's tools no longer exists thanks to the effort of ICE Team. And if you read Durango leaks you should have noticed that Durango seems much more complicated to work with.

C) The amount of RAM makes it a better system for games

Not this shit again...
