I don't know why the Sherlock style text message thing went away after the first couple of episodes. I really like it
different directors, maybe?

I just watched episode4, and it was featured pretty heavily though.

About to start episode5.

as Jtwo says, it's likely a different directors thing. I really liked the way they handled that too; but at least they aren't afraid to show an actual iPhone text message and UI. Or a wikipedia page! It's just embarrassing when shows (looking at you, Dexter) handle that aspect so poorly.

I actually dropped my phone in a glass of beer exactly like that and its functioning perfect to this day.

finished ep 13

how long a wait will it be for S2?

not sure what to expect from the next 13 eps since shit can only get darker on so many sides

Spoiler questions about ep 13
Is Claire pregnant? I thought she was having hot flashes? If she is pregnant that could be a way for her to win her court battle... Dat Remy backstabbing. Billionaire goes and buys shares of the company that Frank wanted to help him fight... Who dies next Zoe or Rachel?

I'm curious, what do people think of all the namedropping and media cameos?

Even though in context it makes sense, it still feels weird when it happens... like, everything else about this world is real except for the fact that the Democrats control the house and the President is some generic white dude instead of Obama.

At least this show is better than Political Animals. Not that hard to beat that though. :p

It fits the world they are trying to portray

I don't think this show is pro any political affiliation which makes it good because I hate politics

Fictional Stephanopoulos did more hard hitting journalism than Reality Stephanopoulos

Piers Morgan hasn't been on so I'm fine with it

Damn. lol

I think it just made my ears perk up when characters would say "Larry and Sergey" or "Arianna (Huffington)" as if people just drop those names like nothing. But maybe that's just how people talk when you're in those circles. lol

Is there an emmy for show with the most dense population of true world super hotties?

This is how their customers want to consume content. At their own pace.

IMO, this is the future of television.

100% agree. This is how I like to watch a show. Knowing that as much of the show that exists is available to me means I don't have to hurry to watch it, nor wait to watch it. It's TV on my schedule, and that's absolutely perfect. I imagine most people with a life would feel the same way.

Episode 6 done. Wow.

Frank Underwood is such a fantastic character and it helps that Kevin Spacey is playing him so well too.

Sympathetic bald guy character spoiler:
this guy needs to quit doing coke because its breaking my heart.

episode 4 -
that brief little look at the camera spacey did when he's manipulating the speaker is so good.

Is there an emmy for show with the most dense population of true world super hotties?

everyone is so beautiful and perfectly dressed. it's amazing.

Damn. lol

I would believe that circle would drop names just like that, I've been around people who talk like that in New York.

It is just the nature of the world they are living in... When you are in DC or any major area of influence. I think it is spot on that those people really do speak like that dropping names left and right, you don't have to know the person but just knowing the name keeps the conversation on that level. It should not be so shocking if they are trying to give a real world feel to this show.

We live in an age of Reality TV Shows, a drama trying to be more real is not so hard to grasp even when they drop some real world names.

That is why Frank talking to the camera is not so out of it to me... it is like we are watching his own reality show.

forgot to ask

episode 13
Does Claire know about Frank killing Peter Russo? when she was crying something about the kids...

everyone is so beautiful and perfectly dressed. it's amazing.

I live in Bridgeport, CT if I take the train west towards NYC the closer I get to NYC the nicer the fashion statements people try to make, by the time I am 30 miles from the City you only see perfection in hairstyle and clothing. While in Bridgeport everyone looks like they just got out of bed and have not showered

DC is just a 3 hour train ride and I've seen the same kind of stuff in DC.

Just finished all episodes. Spacey is definitely getting nominated for an emmy

Back to the Emmy question can this Show win any awards since it is not on a Network?

My Small review of Season 1:

It might not be the best show out there but it is in the top 5 shows out there and definitely the best Web only delivered show ever yet.

Just marathoned through the whole thing. The show starts out great, it's absolutely amazing for the first four episodes or so. Then it starts to slow up and get more "traditional" in terms of storyline/execution etc. Less 4th wall cutaways as well. Ep 11 and 12 were well done, but they didn't match up to the first 4 episodes IMHO.

I'm a fan of Spacey's little henchman/chief of staff. Reminds me of Ashur from Spartacus. Come to think of it, Spacey reminds me of Batiatus' character. Now I know why I love him and his scheming/master plans so much. Do I have a thing for older men with political power who are trying to climb the ladder to even greater power? georgetakei-ohmy.gif

but can a Netflix show get a nod at those TV awards?

The Emmys? Yes.

Broadband TV shows have been eligible for the Emmys since 2006.

The Golden Globes? I have no idea.

Q The Netflix series "House of Cards" is to start filming this spring. How do you feel about the fact that the show will not be on TV? Since it isn't broadcast on TV, will it be excluded from Emmy nominations?

A The world is changing, and we must change with it.

The first Netflix series, "Lilyhammer," is eligible for the Emmys, according to John Leverence, Emmys senior vice president of awards. The Emmys made broadband programming eligible in 2006. Shows must have a certain duration to avoid being entered as a short, and they must have at least six episodes. "Lilyhammer" is eligible on both counts, and "House of Cards" will be, too.

Now that there are devices that allow us to watch on a TV screen the programs we're streaming to our computer, I have no problems with it. It takes a few more steps, but it's still the same as watching a show on, say, HBO, which, like Netflix, is a premium service you pay for above and beyond broadcast TV or regular cable.

Yup, it's one thing that I've noticed is how real they depict smartphones and computers, none of that Made for TV nonsense and sound effects.

I just finished Episode 6.

Let me tell you why I like episode 6.

The debate. Obviously we have one of the first signs that Underwood's plans aren't flawless and that things won't always work out just like he wants. That failure was so complete it was painful to watch, and the show has done an excellent job of building this character to the point where that collapse was as jarring for us as it was for Frank.

But, the more I thought about it, I also liked where it happened. When we see someone like a big time politician fuck up, it's usually pretty high profile and spectacular. The general public doesn't always notice the other shit. I like that the first real crack we see in Frank's armor was presented to the audience much the way it happens in real life: in a very public setting, cameras on, world ready to mock. Sure, we can see a screw up in some behind the scenes event or meeting, but this had a much bigger impact. I'd imagine that for a politician, screwing up on camera (or in an interview) is much more devastating.

In any case, this show is pretty entertaining and if the buzz is as big as I feel it might be, this could be a very big deal for television moving forward.

I think that's one thing Fincher brings to the production. He's usually pretty careful about it and he doesn't like to glamorize technology in stupid and unrealistic ways. It might be a mandate set down for the other directors to follow, or they just picked up on the tone he set with the first two episodes.

I think Rachel, the extra-turned-regular is even hotter than Zoe. Not to mention Robin Wright who's up there in the 40+ pantheon with Cate Blanchett and Lucy Lawless. It's quite remarkable.

That tone was certainly recognizable. Love what they do with the Fincher's style of lighting too.

damn right. She's good.

Awesome show. I finished it. Couldn't stop watching. I wonder how much Sony paid, seriously a vita, multiple video game playing moments, and a PS3 boot up screen.

I really enjoyed the first season. Things cool off in the middle of the season, but it helps to build things up for the final few episodes of the season. I think the Peachoid episode is probably my favorite episode, but there is so many of great scenes even in the down episodes.

Full series spoilers
Some of the scenes and dialogue are amazing and show pretty much everyone is playing the game in their own way. It seems about the only honest standup guy was Hammersmit and he got fired. I really liked the dinner scene with Tusk, his wife and Frank. When Frank says you will make up your own mind when you are ready, Tusk says there is two minds to convince or something to that effect. Their relationships reminds me exactly like Franks and Claires and how they are all just as ruthless as one another.

It is amazing how no one is immune to the corruption, even those who claim to be fighting the good fight. Gillian holds to her morals at one point, but then lies and uses her power to get Vasquez son into Stanford although she never met him and he didnt deserve it. She lied and used her power like everyone else. She makes up lies and plays a part in the corruption like the rest, when she was supposedly fighting the good fight.

I dont think much will come from her lawsuit when various things get out. Including Claire looking into having a baby all along and Gillian getting pregnant by a married man. Claire might have recorded the conversation she had at Gillians house, her purse is big enough to hide anything. Juries like expecting mothers, but hate home wreckers and people who commit adultery. While I admit the thought of my children growing up in a world with corporations getting away with anything they want is frightening, having a a person who will compromise almost everything they believes in and openly lie in court is just as scary imo. Maybe it was Gillians plan all along to expose the charity by any means necessary.

I just hope when whatever story come out Doug doesnt have to fall on the sword because of it ala Dick Cheney's staff when he got caught. Im sure he would get presidential criminal protection from charges and he would end up getting a powerful position within one of the lobbyist companies due to his experience and ability to get things done as well as a huge pay raise. I like him in the role he is in now though.

The characters in the show remind me a lot of the characters in Breaking Bad, everyone is involved in something and has done things that could bring them down as easily as the next person. Zoe is using those around her just like Frank taught her, sad Lucas sees it but still lets her do it for a pieces of ass. If the story gets out, she is just as responsible and stands to fall the quickest given she has very little money to put up a fight. Who knows maybe her parents are loaded just like Kara Mara's real life family who have controlling stakes in both the Steelers and the Giants. Releasing a story only for the public to find out, you were involved, will kill it pretty quickly as a smear campaign. If people find out she was involved with a lot of the conspiracies, she doesnt have the funds to protect her short career and no one would trust or hire her in the future.

Im sure Frank mapped things out when he was first back stabbed. Im curious if the president and Tusk are setting him as punishment for his actions and after they save him they will own him completely. At least he will be safe from almost any story once he takes the VP seat, well outside of killing Russo.

I know everyone has different tastes and opinions but i cannot fathom how any could not like this show, it is utterly amazing. I didn't want to shotgun this whole season so quickly but dammit i am already through 5 episodes and to me it just keeps getting better and better.

Would this show be interesting to someone who knows next to nothing about US politics and isn't very interested in it either? That is to say, does the show function as a compelling drama independently of its subject matter?

Show isn't really about "politics", it's more about the scheming behind it (I guess that's politics). It's like modern day Rome senate, scheming, back stabbing, etc. It's well paced and it's starts right from episode one, so you can pretty much judge if you are into it right from the start.

House of Cards is Richard III x Macbeth, transplanted to modern day society. Politics is just part of the setting, it is not why the show is compelling.

If you've watched Game of Thrones it's basically the same type of intrigue that takes place to control the kingdom, but from the perspective of one person. If you enjoyed that its definitely worth watching this.

Everything spoilers
I was rooting for Russo most of the time - his story is so tragic. I felt the worst for his girlfriend who was there for him no matter what. Glad to see she may be working with the journalists in the future to uncover the truth about Keppeniak or however you spell it. The journalists' arc in the final two episodes was the most exciting part of the whole season for me. I was a bit disappointed in the episodes where Frank wasn't in Washington (Peachoid / military school), but otherwise the episodes were superb. The episode where Russo goes to the hotel room with the prostitute who he got pulled over with earlier in the season is the heartbreaking moment right there. What the hell was he thinking? (nope)

Watched 11 episodes so far, really like it. First half was better IMO, but it has been picking up again, I hope the last two are as good as the start.

Well, except how he played Killzone as if he was playing Pac Man or something. lol

I'd recommend people watch the 1995 Richard III (with Ian McKellen) if they want an idea of where this show is coming from without going through the original House of Cards. You can see where the whole "talking into the camera" is derived from... and hey, it's Gandalf being a mother fucker.

Someone being wooed by Google is going to know who Page and Brin are. Someone running a popular news site is going to know about Huffington Post. So it was perfectly logical in the context of the scene.
