2013 High-Res PC Screenshot Thread of Let the JPEG Die Already

No amount of resolution, AA, and AF will save Halo 3 if it comes to PC as rumored
People really are delusional about console games... I read in that other thread that Halo 3 on PC would look "fantastic". Hmm.

Those Project Cars, Wings of Prey and Planetside 2 shots almost made me believe I was in the OT photo thread. Wow.

So is Dead Space 3 using Frostbite 2? What is the performance like?

It's not using the frostbite 2 engine and I'm pretty sure a gtx 8800 is capable of maxing the game out depending on the resolution. Granted I'm basing this assumption on the fact that DS2 was a game that even the weakest of GPUs could max out.

And I stand by that comment if good image quality and a higher FOV can make it look anywhere close to how the awesome theater mode shots looked like. Hell, even something like GRID still looks gorgeous today with 4K downsampling, and it's from around that era.

delta is right it ain't the frostbite engine. Its in house and from what I've read before with Dead Space 1 it's the Godfather game engine from like 2005 heavily modified to be what it is today. So wouldn't have issues with running on low-end machines.

Disabling bloom made it a lot better for me. It helped in reducing that weird smudgy look! Be careful tho, you do lose the god of rays effect.

Sickass DS3 shots, I think the game looks good, wonder what people were expecting though :P

ARGH- please stop posting those glorious DOTA 2 shots. It's making me increasingly irritable that I can't do any downsampling of my own on my 680m :(

Stupid mobile GPU restrictions....

You're clearly delusional if you think not. Something as simple as a huge resolution bump improves the IQ of games immensely. It allows the full details of textures to be displayed, as well as rendering models at much larger sizes which removes a ton of the aliasing.

I'm sure he is. Visceral said the PC version was a straight-up console port job. Lots of Nvidia driver forced AA and downsampling too, probably.
I'm fairly certain that Driver forced AA doesn't show in shots. At least not from control panel. Inspector forced AA does show I think.

Serious question for the more prominent posters in this thread- are your pictures taken with settings that leave the game playable ? I ask because in my case , I can crank up a game like crysis 2 , turn on HD textures, direct X 11 mode but I get 20 fps at 1080p and about 30 fps if I go to 720p and just upscale. More recently I decided that half the dx11 effects were kind of ugly anyway (the bricks are just a wasteful use of tesselation) so I turned dx11 mode off but left HD textures on. This literally doubled my framerate - at 1080p it runs 60 quite regularly dropping to 40ish on occasion.

Do some of you guys just have very beefy cards or are you just cranking up the settings for a nice screen shot and then turning it down to play it ? Crysis 2 or even the original games were some of the worst offenders that come to mind for me , unreal engine 3 stuff runs smooth as silk except the outdoor segments of the arkham games, capcoms framework games run 120fps + too so it's mostly just a cryengine thing.

I'm a framerate whore above all things, all my shots are from me playing at 60 fps (when possible). Running an i7 with a 680 fyi.

Good to hear, they seem to have improved their engine quite a bit, and i'd rather have flawless image quality with those visuals than FB2.

Although that being said, DS3 looks like it's one of the most artistically inconsistent games of late. The space bits look stupidly good, but there are some really garish colours in some of these interior screens. Don't know if that's because of SweetFX though.

I make sure mine runs at least 60fps, there is the occasional time though when I fancy cranking every little thing up and seeing what happens and I have a specific desire to take screenshots otherwise its just in normal gameplay. I run 2 7870's.

I found it hard to believe how much power is needed for the jump to 2560x1440 from 1080p.

I really only screen dump games with settings that my rig will run 60fps flat, unless it's a buggy piece of shit like NFS:MW (pre-patch) or it's 30fps locked.

Nothing against people who take dumps (ahaha) at framerates that are unplayable just to have a nice picture, but IMO it kinda doesn't really suit the "spirit" of this thread IMO.

I only did that a little while ago as well. Stop stalking me!

It doesn't suit the spirit of you constant complainers, suits the spirit of this thread perfectly.

I'm a constant complainer? Yikes. Next time someone asks my opinion, I'll be sure to not say a thing unless it's in agreeance with everyone else here.

That might have been a tad unfair on my part, I do apologize. I will however say, I see your name quite often when there's a subtle dig to be taken at how the thread works, PNG being an issue, how Photoshop's resizing is being used and what's against the 'spirit of the thread'.

I think I've mentioned the Photoshop thing once (and probably more in reference to Paint.NET's single option) and any time I've mentioned the JPEG thing it's normally a polite nudge for those when I can actually notice compression. About the only time I get incredibly antsy is when people don't post game names or basic settings that might've been used (such as downsampling, SFX etc.) which I think is perfectly justifiable.

Eh, doesn't matter. I'll just hold back on posting anything other than grabs from now on.

No downsampling here unfortunately, just straight 1920 x 1080 as I was streaming the game while playing. Max settings though. Looks pretty great in general, and I was surprised by the amount of graphical options. Not sure why Visceral Games tried to talk down the quality of the PC release.

And not screenshot or graphical quality related but my god was that crate combination puzzle the worst thing I've played in a long time. Really enjoying the game in general but that puzzle was so out of place and awful that it deserves mentioning everywhere.
