Square-Enix Q3/13: ¥5.7b/$61M loss amid console market, praises social/mobile/browser

Wait...

YoY profits are up 5b but they still had a 5.7b loss?

Those are their quarterly results. But it didn't make up for the loss they posted for the first six months of the financial year, so after nine months they're still running at a loss.

Edit: Actually I'm mistaken, or rather VG247 is reporting this in a very misleading way.

FF XIV 2.0 is probably eating tons of cash, it'll be hilarious if it bombs again.

I don't wanna be mean but if even The Old Republic bombed, which has a huge ass franchise behind it, do we really think FF XIV 2.0 is going to succeed? I certainly wish no developer a flop since it results in layoffs most of the time but I just cannot see this game succeed. UNLESS, they keep their expectations low. Maybe they are still hoping that the XI guys move on to XIV.

I can't see it doing well after what happened with the original, the fact that its sub based, and how hard it is for MMOs to survive in today's age.

Mismanaged into oblivion. Will SE survive the next console generation?

They'll probably going to go mobile and handheld exclusive if they can't handle the cost of making more costly games.

It's sort of funny.

They are complaining about the console game market getting increasingly difficult.
And we are complaining about games getting more dumbed down / easier.

Start finishing your games rather then adding more to the never ending queue you dipshits and you'll start getting profits.

God the management for Square is fucking bad.

Gulp,
So high end console games are eating money,
Mobile/Social games are generating money but not enough to cover high end console games,
and the middle ground handheld ground remains idle outside Japan.

This makes me wonder....Has any of the Eidos/Western IPs make them money? Sales for them always seem rather lukewarm. Maybe except for Just Cause 2 and Deus Ex. But even those were across a larger period of time and many Steam sales later.

Maybe they should make the next mainline Final Fantasy for the 3DS.

Actually, I do think they're not doing enough on handhelds - particularly in the form of short-dev-time projects - at the moment. Maybe not an FF, but it strikes me that Guardian of Light - or a followup using a similar engine - would work great on the two handhelds, and shouldn't be too pricey to develop.

Can anyone chart the amount of RPGs sold each year in Japan by company ? I would love to see how S-E's competitors are "struggling" as well.

I don't have a chart but I'm pretty sure SE would be in the top 3 along with Nintendo (Pokemon) and Capcom (if you count Monster Hunter as an RPG). Regardless of peoples' opinions in terms of quality of SE's RPGs, most of them sell better than any other (Japanese) RPG.

FFXI is still doing relatively well (in that it prints money for them). I'm sure they're mostly just trying to convince that crowd to come over to FXIV and bring in a few new people in the process with the updated engine. They don't need a lot of people to turn a profit, they just need the people they get to remain loyal.

And people said that the Eidos aquisition somehow made them good?
The very Eidos that was on the verge on closing to boot!

Having a stellar legacy will do that for you.
They're the people that made countless spinoff and can be successful selling remakes of their decade old games, aside from Nintendo they're the only one who could pull that off.

So they had 10.5b loss in the first 6 months? That's awful.

Actually, double-checking I think it's just VG247 wording things terribly. Because their financial result for the same nine month period in 2011 (period ending Dec 31st 2011) was 5 billion yen in profit.

It will. Sub-based MMOs are a dying breed. It'll be F2P after a few months, I'd wager.

Would it be the first double bomb in gaming history?

I wish the answer were "make better console games in the Japan studios".. But somehow I doubt that's what any analyst would say....

What are the chances of Wada stepping down or being forced to?

Well, it is VG247 :p

Square-Enix cites, “the increasingly difficult condition of the world-wide console game market” as a key issue in its financial report

First a wada stepping down would be welcomed...

Secondly of course it's difficult their console scenario: japan side of the softco lacks quality output (see toryiama ff13 lol) and FFXIV require lots of programmers due to poor development...when you have also other 2 team lost in transation (see FFXII team and Nomura Versus team) for Y-E-A-R-S it's really difficult.

How difficult is it to just give the gamers what they want? Versus, FFXV, FFX HD, KH HD, etc.

Is that really what most people want? None of those games appeal to me.

I want stuff like FFVI, FFIX, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore, SMRPG, Live a Live, Bahamut Lagoon...back when you'd plug in a squaresoft game and get a fun adventure

I want to protect them.

FF XIV 2.0 is probably eating tons of cash, it'll be hilarious if it bombs again.

It will. But that may be the wake up call Square needs to start producing the quality games people want once again.
Lightning Returns will bomb too. Can´t say i won´t enjoy it.

Everytime I see a story like this I think it's another nail in Wada's coffin...and that makes me happy.

I still remember Wada saying that Sony need to sort out the PS3 or SE will stop supporting them ha ha - how's that working out for you now?

S-E was my favorite company. In this gen, I almost hate it. Im actually happy to see it in a bad situation. Maybe they will return to what it was that made me love them... But I doubt it will happen :(

Maybe make some decent games again? Bam! I just saved your company, give me money.

Shitty as the next Tomb Raider looks, it'll probably be a big hit thus destroying every chance we had of ever getting a good TR again.

make a upport of Sleeping Dogs on next gen consoles that looks more like the PC version and include all the dlc.

I'd buy that.
