Asahi: PlayStation 4 to be over 40,000 yen

I agree that $399 is where they need to be. Not saying that I expect it, just saying that once you go past a 3 in that most significant digit position you are getting exponentially more difficult to sell on impulse in the U.S.

Americans need to come to face with the fact your currency has halved in value. To demand a cheap console is just entitlement and petulance.

But Americans demand everything be cheap and affordable at the expense of other nations. Entitlement and Petulance is a US tagline these days

we can only hope for this trend of Yen strengthening to continue and to get $399 PS4... that would be awesome price.

Will do incredibly well. With the early announcement, regular controller focus, clear edge on the power over Durango and superb first party I can see Sony doing a real comeback this Christmas.

Sounds good to me. Hopefully the PS4 has some great games to make that great value, sure sounds reasonable as-is.

Speaking strictly about Japan, if they want it to do decently there it needs to be under 40,000 yen, not over it. As far under as they can get it.

399$ would be the sweet spot for me and I think the rest of the US launch market.

At that point, I could basically buy the box, an extra controller, 3-4 launch games, and some PSN stuff right out of the gate on launch day, with no regrets.

I could see MS undercutting that price by $50 or so too, and me biting on that as well.

Somebody please photoshop Kaz's face on this.

399 seems like an OK price, I just hope it just gets a bit lower for the casual consumers' and sales' sake (who don't want to pay much for a console) and that MS follows suit.
Yeah, wishful thinking.

given they're coming off a couple failed hardware launches (and by couple i mean three), they better have learned some serious lessons. i'm not convinced. they might get a leg up off microsoft fumbling the north american market, but they better have been focusing on this machine for the last 3 years for it to make a big splash.

$400 seems to be a good price, really. It would, however, be great if the pack were to include a game (which I doubt) or something more than the expected console+controller... 6 months of Playstation Plus subscription, for example - I'm naturally assuming Playstation Plus will be present on the new console.

I'm expecting $499 price points for ps4 and 720, with gradual price drops for the next 10 years.

Either that, or they'll go for $300-400 without price cuts, releasing new models every 1-2 years like smartphones.

I expect 399 and 499 SKUs. Only problem for me is the impending Australia tax where I'll pay 40% more for something 4 months late. If it's 100-250 volts I will be importing. I highly doubt they will be region locked either.

Being stuck as part of Sony Europe rather than Sony US really does suck. Which is why importing a Japanese PS3 was how I got started. Was like half the price of the local model.

For something I'm going to spend so much time with over the next 5+ years, 499 seems like an easy purchase.

If it's not going to follow the WiiU into trouble, it's got to be $300 or less at launch.

Given iPods start at that price I don't really understand that kind of view. Ditto the costs of buying and running a smart phone. Or cable. Or a tablet.

399 will be no pack in and a small/no harddrive. They'll sell expandable HDDs at a higher price to make up for costs, similar to Vita memory cards. If they haven't learned why the Vita isn't selling high- I don't see why they wouldn't expect the same for PS4.

Even at that price, they might avoid the HDMI cord again to save costs though at this point I don't know how much cost saving that would do.

They purposefully said the Vita wasn't being sold at a loss, but I doubt the PS4 with the rumored specs will do the same. It sounds like there's no screen now, just a trackpad on the controller- which would definitely cut costs.

$399-$499 I'm ok with. I spent $400 on a new graphics card for my PC last year and I don't see a new console as any different purchase wise.

But I always hope for cheaper because it means a larger install base at launch

well, I'll see you guys in 3-4 years when the slim PS4 comes out at ~$300. In the meantime I have a great back log of ps3 games and TV shows to catch up on

What exactly about the conservative specs we have seen makes you think around $400 is unrealistic?

~400-450 USD ballpark for all that top shelf tech (relatively speaking of course) crammed in there sounds about right.

This is the real deal gents, I'm in.

They run 240v too don't they? don't have to worry now. only problem is I know someone in the US but not Japan. I could get it sent out for only the cost of fast international freight. Though a holiday in Japan and some snowboarding sounds mighty temping....

I remember Michael "puppet" Ephraim spinning some bullshit about how we would be a small fish in a big ocean if we went to SCEA instead.... last time I checked there are identical sales of consoles in Europe. He just likes being able to nickle and dime us. Plus we have to put up with all the European localisation issues, Languages (no offence Europe but we don't need our games to be in 5 languages), getting distro rights for dozens of different countries and meeting all their legislative requirements. I'd prefer to be part of Sony Asia, their games are dirt cheap and come out quick smart.

Hopefully they will have a $199 subsidized price with subscription to PS plus or something. A $299 price for the console would have been better after the 599 US Dollars debacle.

No way in hell does a brand new console get released with a price point of around $199, even with some shitty subscription attached.

Non-Americans need to come to the fact that America makes up a 4th/5th of the world's economy. If we don't take to an electronic product, chances are it will have a much harder time than it should.

Depending on the launch lineup, I guess I would buy one at launch for $399. I would do $499 if it had Backwards Compatibility and a pack-in game that I wanted (like the MGS4 80GB model PS3).

That's...a whopper. It's impossible. A Slim 250GB is just under $300. Fuck nickel-and-diming and all that, but this is not happening.

$400 is actually lower than I expected. Still no guarantee I'm getting it at launch, I have no plans to do so. News about additional things necessary God forbid (hard drive, etc.) and launch lineup may push me over the edge, but it has to be phenomenal and though I'm definitely edging towards PS4 over 720, I'm not betting on both happening.

You make a point, but it's changing my friend, soon it will be Asia that will lead consumption. 300 million will never out buy 4 billion. It's believed that will happen in the next ten years. God help the state of the environment when that many people start switching on TVs, Air conditioners and PlayStations.

Doesn't change the fact that Americans should shift their expectations of what something should cost. Particularly considering the stress Nintendo and Sony have felt has been exacerbated by the strong Yen and weak Greenback.

£329 seems great. I'll bite. I'm predicting higher, but if this price turns out to be accurate, Sony are on to a potential winner.

The basic package will probably go for 500€ in Finland just because of the batshit crazy mystery taxes here. Maybe I'll have to end up importing it anyway if EU gets the system half a year later as usual.
