The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford was underwhelming when I saw it. I'll try to rewatch it soon, to see if my perception has changed.

I didn't much like it either. The final 30 minutes were the interesting part, seeing the characters' lives and public perception AFTER the event(similar to the last hour being the interesting part of Zodiac).

I loved it, a great tale of obsession.

They were interesting because they built on the first part of idolization of Jesse, from Robert Ford.

I've had the copy I borrowed from my friend months ago just sitting there staring at me.....but everytime I consider watching it it's already late and the movie is about 3 hours I think. Did watch O Brother Where Art Thou for the first time last night, so I'm feeling inspired for some more R Deeks cinematography......

Definitely the best part about the movie for me. It was beautiful. But Casey Affleck was also outstanding.

Definitely agreed. Reminded me of There Will Be Blood's ending.

and Gone Baby Gone is also the only other movie I've seen him in, and loved him in that too!

going by who in here has rated it on letterboxd, I'll be the one regular huge in defense of A History of Violence. Fantastic. It definitely goes straight from the title, covers concepts of "history" and "violence" but the genius lies in how Cronenberg attacks these ideas. He's one of the few directors to nail the ties between violence, sex, the sacred, and creation. So of course he nails everything here. I already want to watch this again.

Also Divius, liking the Marx Bros is an essential life skill, you need to straighten up and fly right.
I liked the Marx Bro's and the movie for sure, I just didn't love them. I can see the appeal. I'm still young, I'm sure I'll run into another movie of theirs one day. Maybe they'll grow on me.

I don't care what anyone says; AVP is a solid b-movie.

Nice shot composition, tons of slime, decent character development, great location, etc. It's probably better than most fanboy fantasies about the subject.

Expendables' list is alright but missing the best movie of the century Love Exposure.

I like you.

Was asked my top ten for 2000s for an online critics survey. It was funny to see how my tastes changed in the last three years. City of God dropped out, while In the Mood For Love entered (having seen it after the decade ended), as did The New World and then a few other changes, but #1 still remained strong.

1.) Children of Men
2.) The Assassination of Jesse James By the Coward Robert Ford
3.) No Country for Old Men
4.) The Fountain
5.) The New World
6.) In the Mood For Love
7.) Zodiac
8.) A Serious Man
9.) Lost in Translation
10.) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Love your list for #4, hate it for #1.

AvP doesn't make any egregious mistakes, but I've tried to watch it a few times and always zone out right around the sacrificial chamber section. I can't actually remember anything that happens beyond that point except for a Predator doing a leaping spin attack. The movie is slick enough in terms of production, but it reminds me of the Underworld films; it's like a hyper-sterile view of something that should theoretically be cool, but its slickness makes everything kind of dull and clinical.

I'm probably the odd man out, because I vastly prefer AvP: Requiem. It isn't technically as sound and its place in the series' lore is pretty awkward, but it's so goddamn mean spirited that it's at least memorable.

Your list looks like one someone who watches only English language films would make, though they always try and get that one non-English language film in there (seems to typically be an Asian film, though more along the lines of Oldboy in the action/thriller/revenge type thing and not so much drama). Not to accuse you of being one of those people, as I know you do watch films from all countries, but it just seems unlikely to me that a ballot spanning a decade would be so ethnocentric.

Certainly open to watching anything. I've seen a good chunk of foreign films from that decade, but always welcome for more suggestions. If its any consolation, if the list was expanded, I'd pop in 4 Months, 3 Weeks And 2 Days, Cache, Y Tu Mamá También and Talk to Her most likely.

Talk to Her would definitely be in mine. Love that movie.

Let me get a list together.

Maybe it's due to the overall low quality of foreign cinema and english films are just so much better than the rest of the world..;p to talk seriously for a second, I think it's something that is done unconsciously when it comes to lists, sometimes it's hard to make a diverse list without making a conscious decision to do so (and then you come off as some pretentious film buff), I mean I've watched a decent amount of foreign films from the last decade, but if you asked me to make a list right this second it would probably come off as just as ethnocentric because it's easier for me to recall english language films than foreign ones (where I frequently forget the titles to).

The Golem (Wegener)

Letterboxd said:
Everyone in this movie—sans the rabbis and the Golem itself—looks like flower children from a Bosch painting, like the Garden of Earthly Delights or the Temptation of St. Anthony. Is it just me or is that twisted fairy-tale vernacular just what Wegener wanted?
This feels less like a focused masterpiece and more like a sampler of German cinema to come, given this came out in 1920 right before the onset of German Expressionism. It actually deals with some interesting archetypal and socio-political themes relevant to anti-Semitism and Jewish relations in Europe, though not in great detail. The central conflicts are fun enough and drive the whole thing forward, though not always with ease. I'd dare say that, if I ever had to introduce someone to Weimar silent cinema, this might be a better choice than Nosferatu because of the diversity in messages. It's not a horror story like everyone says it is, nor does it fully belong to German Expressionism; what's here is more like a moralizing fairy tale. I like that approach quite a bit. ***/**

Am I crazy for having some desire for doing AMC's big Die Hard marathon tomorrow? While I'm hardly Die Hard 2's biggest fan, I would sure love to see the first three on a big screen, even if I'm not so interested in the new one and the only thing I ever wanted to know about Live Free or Die Hard was that Len Wiseman made it.

Cinemark is doing a Die Hard marathon tomorrow too. I don't have any inclination to marathon the movies, and have to work besides. I do wish I had next two Saturdays open so I could go to the Best Picture Oscar marathon sessions, though...

I could go to one of those, but the only nominee I haven't seen is Amour, and the only way to see it is by getting a ticket to the marathon. I'm sure Amour is a fine film, but I'm not spending $30 for that honor.

Taken 2 - not as bad as people said. story was dumb but the action was great.

Prometheus - pretty CGI but really weak story and all the characters are assholes.

Dredd - it was alright. i liked the main girl. she's cute and had some good scenes. the action was a bit too slow for me. overrated.

My dad loves that movie, because it re-enforced all his over-protective habits about us. He gets nervous when he just go out of town to say, Beaumont to Houston. So we got this girl who just...IMMEDIATELY gets kidnapped once he relents to all the bitching and guilt tripping, I mean right off the damn plane! <om is distraught, that'll teach you to not listen to dad! Father just kicks everybody's ass unrelentingly.

All I was thinking at the end was, this girl is not going out ever again.

Also, too perky for what she went through.
