System Shock 2 Confirmed for GOG Release! Out Now! (Via RPS)

easily in the top 10 of the greatest games ever made

if you like bioshock or dead space 1, get this. there is no way around it.

for whatever reason I missed both SS 1 and SS 2. Should I just go for 2 do you think?

I often times have trouble replaying older 3d games, I can't get immersed due to the the graphics (no problem playing SNES games because those are different format/sidescroller, etc).

It doesn't make sense and never will. Steam fanboyism is illogical.

It is pretty logical actually. I believe in ten years there is a very good chance steam will still be around and I'll be able to click to play my games.

GoG? Maybe. But no DRM so I can just keep my own copies right? Well that is what I use steam for.

Hence my preference. All clear?

It's very simple, I want purchases on as few websites as possible because it's a lot simpler. I only have PC games on Steam, Battle.net and Origin, and even that's more than I'd like.

Yeah, 2 was a masterpiece, 1 was pretty rough a decade ago.

strange, but isn't that also related with anyone re-releasing the game digitally too?

Night Dive mentions it's currently working on its own game so I imagine the studio simply said it'd take a particularly small cut if one at all, leaving more than the lion's share for Meadowbrook; this release seems more of a fan-driven venture than a business one. On a related note, I suspect the issue of revenue division is where Meadowbrook and EA butted heads when Dead Space allegedly began life as System Shock 3.

I just hope this inspires the fan tweaks, HDmakes, etc, beyond fixes to resume.

They really should fix the multiplayer too though, I don’t see it mentioned in the interview I skimmed…

Weird that they don't release the first one too though. Didn't that already have fan tweaks that make it play more like SS2?

Lol @ Steam loyalty. Managing shortcuts in folders is hard, as is using the same username/email/password on a few sites. Lol.

Ditch Origin and Battle.net, replace with GOG.

It took them years and I'm sure a fair amount of money to get the rights to simply re-release the games digitally. If a publisher comes in and wants the rights for a new AAA game, it'll be very expensive and probably not worth the cost.

Seriously. GOG is so much better for gamers than either Origin or Battle.net
I don't want to derail the thread with some retailer debate, but I practically never play old games, SS2 is a special occasion, and if all I have to do is wait six months for it to come to Steam, I'm fine with that. If I'd have thought Mass Effect 3 would have come to Steam, I wouldn't have used Origin. Being better services is great, but ultimately the only thing that really matters is what software they have, and given the tiny amount of old games I play, GoG doesn't provide a service I really want.

My Steam question was never some sort of attack on GoG, I'm sure they're doing great work, I'm just not their demographic.

Yeah, I'm sure you honestly expected an interview that includes gog staff to talk about Steam, without having it in the title.

It was pretty clunky when it was released. I don't believe it is worth playing today unless you are massively keen.

Problem is you will enjoy 2 more...

Have you played the first System Shock?

I guess it is too bad though, that it's just too hard to get into these days due to its interface.

My system is shocked.

I wonder what they mean "ported/updated by"? Hoping that means just getting it running, I do not want a modded game. I can do that myself.

There are some user-made mods out there which do phenomenal work on the game’s stability, but none of them were quite perfect, so we took the game to our expert techninjas to analyse and swat the remaining bugs. It was some work to get it done, but as this is a game that we’ve wanted to release for four-plus years, it was also definitely a labour of love.

Yes that was the game I was talking about. Played through them both at release.

Bioshock really, really hurt :| I don't think it is fair to compare them really. It is like saying Forza is better than Ultima 7.

I wasn't asking about the article. In the thread the other day, with the rumour this was happening, it also suggested it was coming to Steam, and now one half of the rumour is clearly true, I thought it was very possible the other half was true, and that people in the thread might know that.

To be fair to StuBurns, my query was never an attack, as I personally feel like both Steam and GOG.com complement each other perfectly, and was genuinely curious why the wait on one if a game you want is on the other.

No need to bring down the System Shock 2 lovefest, unless it's to lord the superiority of SS2 over Bioshock, in which case carry on.

Ok, I'll be that guy. I, somehow, never played either of the System Shock games. Would I be doing this game justice by playing it through on co-op the first time?

If I remember correctly System Shock 2 sold really poorly didn't it? I'm seeing numbers of around 59k over about 8 months. It's probably why we never seen a proper sequel despite the games greatness.

Great. Now I'll have a chance to play this.

It is pretty logical actually. I believe in ten years there is a very good chance steam will still be around and I'll be able to click to play my games.

Your own copies on Steam? lawl.

It will sell more as a rerelease.

I'm not usually a PC gamer, but the SS games are among my favourite games of all time. It says a lot that these games make Bioshock (a very good game in its own right) look like a disappointment, as they truly do.

Fuck no. You are alone and that is the way it should be. The atmosphere is incredible, don't be tempted to spoil it for yourself.

Don't be like that, you know exactly what I mean. Steam is a library of all my games that I trust will be around for the long haul. It'll do a far better job then I ever will at keeping them available and it gives me a lot of peace of mind.

I'd love it that I could somehow access my GOG library from within Steam automatically, instead of having to add non-steam shortcuts, so that I also have the DRM free option and extra bonuses I doubt it will happen though and I am also happy with the current service of GOG.

Fun anecdote: I remember when trying to reacquire SS2 back in the day after losing it the first time, I scoured shops that sold PC games far and wide and, having come up empty handed, I decided to throw caution to the wind and ordered a copy through that old company Chips&bits that used to advertise in the back of game magazines. I was certain my money was as good as stolen, but two weeks later I was happily surprised with a sealed box of System Shock 2.

Skip forward three years later, and I loan the game to a coworker, only to never hear from them again. Fuck!

Holy crap.

I can't believe that in the last week we have basically gone from System Shock 2 being lost forver in a legal mess of doom, to being released tomorrow. Day 1, plain and simple. GOG are going to make a killing on this one with the pent up demand on the site for this.

I think the most exciting thing about this is that presumably, we'll be getting a version of SS2 that runs on modern systems without any tinkering. That's reason enough to buy this even if you already own it.
