GAF is growing

To me it feels like approval rates have gone up over the last year as the mod team grew to help keep the sanity balance. New policies like "you aren't the boss" and "stop being a little bitch" in addition to the original "don't be a dick" have also expanded borders of integrity for mod hammerstrike freedoms to allow more new/untrained posters in.

It's not even close to that bad.

Reddit has declined faster than any other web community I've ever been a part of.
Yeah, just playing around. I hate to be apart of the talk shit about reddit campaign, but I only lasted a year there. Still some good subreddits though.

As internet dynamics shift it might be reasonable to change the account approval system, but not to be more open, just to use different accountability methods.

It took me two years to get approved ! When I got the email saying that I was, I had completely forgotten about my demand. haha.

I'm glad to be here. It's a terrific community.

I'd like to say that I am a little envious about that, but I feel like the extra year of reading GAF while not posting was for the best in that I felt like I learned what goes and what absolutely shouldn't go when posting.

Feeling the same. Getting to interact with FFGAF after lurking all related threads year after year was such a great sentiment.

Or perhaps was I already along with you guys for all this time? Just under another form, that is.

Nah, I've promised I stopped yet.

I'm hoping the interviews/documentary aren't going to be PR-fests. It'd be nice if those doing them actually cover the bad qualities of GAF too, since they do exist.

Yes, it can be difficult to find anyone willing to talk shit about NeoGAF, since we're so well-loved by the press and industry.

I hope account approval is never removed, took me months to get approved it's like a badge of honor. Hey I'm a Junior Member on GAF, eat that RL friends.

Having moderated F2P publisher forums in the past, the account approval system is a godsend.

Although I'm glad it only took me a week to get in while it took a friend of mine months lol.

Ummmm isnt that a boy...like a kid?

I feel like the newbies have grown far more audacious than when I was a Junior to the point where this forum feels like it has become diluted with the same filth that spawns in other forums with open email. And I have seen concessions in the form of lack of action be made just because some of these members claim to be sources of information that one can not readily get anywhere else first.

One of the reasons could be down to the wait time for account approval being decreased over the years. When I joined, I had to wait six months. That lesson in patience taught me the value of this account and how not jeopardise it.

Do tell me how often we do account approvals right now compared to the past.

do people get banned for teasing info or what because I remember how annoying that shit Lupinko spouted about umvc3 was

Sarcasm aside, like any community GAF isn't perfect. We do tend to perpetuate hate to the point where we generate clusters of angry mobs whom scour the internet spreading death and destruction at times (Aliens anyone?).

But, internally, there's always been problems too - like the fact that as users here we're all pretty much powerless, especially on a forum of this size. If there was a mod doing shady shit and you didn't care then there's not a damn thing we can do. I know I even PM'd you in the past where a mod had straight up admitted to enforcing double standards and showing preference to one user over another and never received a response, so case in point.

There's no way to hold you accountable for anything that happens on GAF, so if you, the owner, don't care about something then we get the ol' dealwithit.jpg and continue to get kicked around until we either stop visiting GAF completely or abandon the thread(s)/forum that said mod/user frequents.

Also, something that is amusing, if there's a mod that's abusive or causing you issues you can't add them to your ignore list - the forum won't physically let you. So, you can't do anything about them and you can't ignore them either. Awesome.

I have not been keeping statistical tab but iirc, I have seen a lot of juniors pop up in the last year or so compared to 08, 09, 10.

Do not take this the wrong way; GAF still stands apart from the rest primarily because of the insider information and developer participation. It was only yesterday that I thought of creating a thread in OT (for this Sat) asking about a biography about you and how it relates to the birth of this site and its evolution into what it is today, a cornucopia of top notch gaming information collated from various sources under a single forum with restricted access for participation. I may be wrong by the hard numbers but I really feel like the ratio of uncaring members to the total number of newcomers in the last year or so has changed for the worse. Either that or I have been spending more time on GAF than I did over a year ago.

It would be nice if there were a way to see the "opinions" behind bans for everyone, if not for mod accountability, then at least to know why X member was banned and to get a better sense of whats acceptable beyond just the tos.

Haven't noticed a huge growth. I actually had my account for 2 years (think I applied and got accepted in 08) before I started posting. Totally forgot I had it.

That doesn't mean approvals are more frequent, it just means that more people are signing up than ever before.

Quoted for truth, last week i went over 300 posts, that was a good feeling seeing that junior drop off.

I was wondering how that worked but I was afraid to ask. I lurk more than I post but I have been more active in the PC thread b/c I love building PC's.

But does that not mean you have to approve more frequently to keep the ratio of acceptance similar to the prior years? Of course, it would be different if there was an absolute numerical limit per month instead of a percentage/ratio.

And do all these new members have a fixed time of say, 6 months, before their accounts get approved with the privilege of being able to participate in the discussion?

How about becoming a regular member who is able to make topics again... Its been over 2 years for me with the Junior Membership. =(

I'm the opposite. I like to read many threads but don't feel the need to post. I generally only post if I actually have something positive to add to the discussion. I've ducked out of alot of threads cause you get some ridiculous comments from people who post for the sake of it.

This is me as well. I just don't see the need to post the same thing that's already been said 10 times earlier in the thread...

so whats the timescale on this graph

I had to wait for almost a year until I got approval and post (junior member previlage). I waited for another 2 years more until I became a member. Hmmm...okay, but I think it need to be speed up a bit (not necessarily be open tho)
