Destructoid: PS4 controller prototype & devkit photo, [Up: New Photo/Info In OP]

Sticks are placed further apart, appear to be concave and the handles look thicker, all of which are very good things. The sticks still look too tall and it would be better I'd they were lower. All in all though, this looks like it could be a fairly tolerable controller.

Sony has no shame. Are they really going to try to sell screens on controllers having seen Nintendo innovate that approach with the WiiU? Ripping off rumble from the N64 controller, motion controls with the Sixaxis, and now SCREENS with this unnamed PS4 controller, I have never been more disappointed. Can they not come up with an innovative idea for once in their companies lives? At least with the Vita they at least tried to innovate with rear touch panel capabilities, but this is just getting ridiculous. Sony I sincerely hope you change your plans while you have the time. Maybe then will I consider dropping money on this travesty.
Uh...screen?

Trust me sir, you're not the only one disgusted by these tactics. Rising above the clear corporate machine is something we as gamers must do. Onward we must push in order to secure a place where we as gamers are no longer taken advantage of. Look, I know some of you fine folk are okay with blatant plagiarism in the industry. Let us reject in this instance though the clear shenanigans and gimmickery this controller represents. I know I won't be there day 1 for PS4's launch. Nor will I be there for day 2 of PS4's launch. Gone are the days where honor was a concept that pervaded the Japanese gaming industry.
So...day 3 then?

LOL I love it when people exaggerate on the internet.

I really hope that's a microphone jack on the bottom. Really love that feature from the Wii U gamepad. I just hope it's not for mics, like MS did.

Much thanks and makes sense. I like how wherever this picture came from they still kept the power going to a Gamecube devkit.

I'll say it again, because it'll be buried on auto-updating scripts:

It's a original pre-production Wii devkit. Original Wii had Gamecube ports.

I'm not 100% fond of it but I can imagine it being useful for web browsing while pausing mid-game, looking up a FAQ in a browser, and so on. Other than that, I'm not sure how it would complement gaming because I can only see myself using my two thumbs to touch the area if necessary (otherwise I would have to take one hand off). It seems more useful on the system side.

My question to that is what can be done on the touchpad that can't be done with a button? I am all about moving the industry forward but what use does a touch pad do? I just don't see the use of it.

I guess no one wants to comment on anything until an unknown source lets it out, then they can come out and confirm it and speak on it.

This or a really rough NDA that effectively kills that person's access to anything related to the company (I think black-balled is the term).

I'm under the impression that most "leaks" as they are now are a part of the company's marketing strategy.

Didnt make the gif btw.

The little things is how I like it. One of my favorite features with the Wii U gamepad is clicking through the menus in Black Ops 2. I find it way more easier and quicker.

You've been complaining since the first page. You don't like it, okay. We understand.

Ohh come on, I only complained once. :)

But ok ok, I get it. I'll give it some time. Hopefully journalists will get some hands on time with it at 20th. I think it was the initial shock of "This doesn't look exactly like the DS3 WTF".

But I think the controller looks swell, it just needs to be cleaned and I'm sure it well as that thing looks like something from Star Trek. It will be fine, trust me.

I have small hands, so that's why I never complain about the controllers.

Except that Game Cube yellow analog stick, wtf were they thinking.

is it an actual display screen? will it be able to light up and display at the very least text?

Looking unlikely at this point.

But I think whereas Nintendo designed a controller that split your attention from the living room screen, Sony is designing a controller that turns your HDTV essentially into a tablet.

Allowing you to easily navigate netflix, web browsers, OS features, etc.

As for typing, that's another story...not quite sure how easy that's going to be.

My big question is just HOW EXACTLY motion control fits into this controller.

Maybe I don't understand concave/convex as well as I thought I did, but I'm not getting why people are saying it's concave now. Looks like a compromise where it's convex but there's a grip now to stop your thumbs from slipping for people who have problems with that. So maybe technically concave, but I wouldn't compare it to the Xbox controller.

Ok... Is that worth the redesign? I am not seeing the practicality of it.

I think it is worth it.

You will see it in action on 2/20, but like I said... interfacing with an HDTV in a similar way to how you interface with a tablet is pretty crucial in breaking certain OS boundaries.

It's not very useful for gaming, though

And your wallet. This thing has to cost a fortune with all those features packed in...

Actually I don't think a touchpad is going to increase the BOM that significantly, nor is an LED light on top of the controller.

Cameras on the console probably don't cost too much either.

If it were a touchSCREEN, sure, that would raise costs substantially

Yeah, but those Move features surely aren't free. And the normal controllers this gen are already expensive...

Really wish they would move one of the analog sticks to follow the design of the Xbox 360 controller or Wii U Pro controller. That looks pretty good though (assuming it's legit), I just hope the battery life doesn't suffer too much from the screen.

i just suddenly realized how genius the placement of those 2 new buttons are. therefor i also just realized how much of a pain in the ass it's been to reach over the sticks to hit start or select. the new placements are MUCH better.

also, just for the record, we had confirmation that start and select aren't actually gone, right? swifty said it on a page back there somewhere.

i think the share stuff will be like, click the touch pad once to take a screenshot, and click and hold to start recording video. it would be cool to be able to use the click in games though...

Why even include Move capabilities in this? It'll suck ass compared to a proper one-handed (2 part) Move.

not only is it not a circle, but a shape that can discern between tilt and angle etc., but it's also going to be used with a dual-camera Eye that is depth sensing. it won't "suck ass" compared to PS3 Move/Eye.

There's no screen, it's a TOUCHPAD, and yeah many here want the asymmetrical analog sticks (xbox) (Wii U Pro ) but it's not happening.

Yes it will. All of those upgrades could have easily been incorporated into a new Move controller. The dual shock cannot be held with one hand well and thus ruins one of the major advantages of the single-handed design: that it is an extension of your arm.

The SIXAXIS and DualShock 3 already had accelerometers and gyroscopes in them, Move just uses better ones and a bright light.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the working theory is that they're screw covers and not buttons.

Triangle, Circle, Cross and Square as digital buttons is a step back in controller design. The face buttons have been pressure sensitive/analog buttons since PS2.
Go play GT5 or MGS2 HD and you can use those buttons with slight pressure to full pressure

The PS2 and PS3 buttons are digital. Each had 8-bit values so they have 0-255 as a range of input. It's not "analog" analog requires a potentiometer. DS2 and 3 used a "digital potentiometer" which isn't a "real" one but it mimics analog.
