Meteorite crash in Russia

2.5 mins for the sonic boom to get to the camera o.0

Man so much light and so much noise from a meteor that is tiny enough to fall apart and evaporate before it even makes it to the ground.

Imagine if that 45m one would hit the earth... that doesn't even sound all that big. Or something larger.
Kinectic energy is scary.

The video from the ru site.

That is fucking TERRIFYING.
I was horrified watching thinking a huge explosion or crash would follow.

There should be loads of footage from this in the coming days, tons of russians have a camera in their car + cellphones

MOSCOW — Russian officials say a meteorite has fallen in the Chelyabinsk region some 1,500 kilometers (930 miles) east of Moscow.

A spokesman for the Russian Interior Ministry, Vadim Kolesnikov, said the Friday morning fall caused a blast that broke windows.

There were no immediate confirmed reports of injuries, but Russian news agencies cited unnamed sources as saying several people were injured at a school in a thinly populated part of the region, which is on the eastern edge of the Ural Mountains.
Not as exciting a write up though.

another article:

(Reuters) - A powerful blast rocked the Russian region of the Urals early on Friday with bright objects, identified as possible meteorites, falling from the sky, emergency officials said.

"It was definitely not a plane," an emergency official told Reuters, without elaborating. "We are gathering the bits of information and have no data on the casualties so far."

No one was hurt in a meteor shower, an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. Local residents said they witnessed burning objects in the sky of the Chelyabinsk and Sverdlovsk regions.

A Reuters witness in Chelyabinsk reported hearing a huge blast early in the morning and feeling a shockwave in a 19-storey building in the town center.

The sounds of car alarms and breaking windows could be heard in the area, the witness said, and mobile phones were working intermittently.

"Preliminary indications are that it was a meteorite rain," an emergency official told RIA-Novosti. "We have information about a blast at 10,000-meter (32,800-foot) altitude. It is being verified."

The trace from a falling object could be seen in Yekaterinburg, some 200 kilometers (125 miles) southeast of Chelyabinsk, another Reuters witness said.

This means if it is related to the bigger one, they were not able to spot the smaller ones. Who knows how many others might be coming, or where they might land.

Anything small enough to not be detected when this close isn't going to be big enough to do any real damage.

edit: since the sound took about 2.5 mins to get to the camera in that one video it was 51km away. That is a pretty big smoke plume then to look that big from so far.

Sorry but why isn't this on all the news sites? Isn't this pretty newsworthy?

Its early in Europe/the UK. There was panic reported near the event and the news outlets are gettting the story together now. It will make the next 24/48 hrs news cycle. Perfect primer for the [near-miss] meteor [tomorrow]. Maybe we can take a step toward planetary defense, as one people.

We do get hit by a lot of asteroids. Below a certain size, they'll almost certainly disintegrate in the atmosphere, sometimes in a really impressive fashion. The only thing notable about this would be how many people saw it.

Thanks for posting all the videos, crazy stuff!!

That first video with it passing over the road, I would have freaked out... looked like end of the world stuff...

According to unconfirmed reports, the meteorite was intercepted by an air defense unit at the Urzhumka settlement near Chelyabinsk. A missile salvo reportedly blew the meteorite to pieces at an altitude of 20 kilometers.

What's everyone so worked up about? So there's an asteroid, big deal. It'll burn up in our atmosphere and what's ever left will be no bigger than a Chihuahua's head.

My lower body clothing would be DONE. DAT SOUND

damn. an air defence unit lead by Putin shot the thing down before it hit earth? amazing.

I'm surprised he didn't just wait at the impact point and punch it back into space.

how did they know the meteor was coming, or is it that the air defense unit just happened to be their?
Has this even been done before (intercepting meteors)?

You're asking dangerous questions, comrade.
