Oh, Wii U! I don't like that! As a fan, I do not like that! I would like to see it sell well, but, you know, I can understand the lack of interest. I hope it will recover towards the end of 2013 as desireable games are going to arrive.

It's hard to have confidence they'll get it right, but I do believe that they soft launched intentionally; you simply don't hold so much back, you don't leave marketing and a co-ordinated retail push almost completely alone.
I think a huge part of their problem is that they assumed 5 million units would sell unassisted. That's a woeful misjudgement born of a horrible misreading of the market (I‘m sure I'll be saying the same for the others if the minimum price of admission ends up being $399 without a game; it's a different market and the 360/PS3 have been adopted over time, anyone expecting PS2-like demand is going to be disappointed) but it's less damaging than launching in a blaze of saturated glory yet still struggling to gain traction.
I don't believe Iwata for a second when he claims that no price cut is planned. I think a cut + Nintendo hits + casual centric marketing late 2013 has ALWAYS been on the cards. There's simply no other reason for the lack of it besides arrogantly assuming 5m 'core' gamers were gonna buy it by default. If we don't see that towards the end of the year, I think Nintendo will have proven itself clueless to an unprecedented extent.
These Wii U numbers sure don't inspire hope. I'll wait until holidays before making a final opinion on the matter, but I have a feeling we're in for a rough ride.

Nearly every kid was using an iPhone or iPod touch to play games/listen to music. I don't understand the parents that give these 7-12 year olds such expensive toys. Apple devices aren't really durable either so I'd be too scared to give a kid one cause they'd break it in a month. Just anecdotal evidence, but whatever.

Because they're cheaper. .99 cents vs 30 - 40 dollars a game? Why wouldn't a parent prefer this route?

The problem is they do that, and then they have nothing to release for the next 2-3 years. They've done that before.
A lot of people forget that every console has no games around launch. It always looks good in the months leading up to launch, and then you find out most of the 3rd party games are delayed and half of the first party games are delayed as well. The first 6-12 months for even the most successful consoles are slow.
PS3 was atrocious. The worst I can remember, especially in contrast to the hype leading up to release about the first year launch lineup. I can remember in ?March? Calling All Cars was being talked about in every PS3 thread, people just dying for it to release. That was how bad it was.

Don't have a PS3 yet, but no bc on the next Xbox would push me over to the PS4. So yes that is problem.
Not as big as a problem taking away my ownership of games I buy. Their plans to fight the boggie man of used games does not fit well with how I have been buying and playing games my whole life. It makes things very inconvenient for me and takes away a lot of the perks of console gaming.
I'm not really sure how I'll get my gaming fix in the future if the rumours are true.

True, if WiiU is 57K, and assuming MS is including WiiU in the current generation talk, then Wii+PS3 is ~300K. I think PS3 probably outsold the Wii, so an educated, but conservative guess is PS3 > 150K and 57K < Wii < 150K.
A more aggressive guess is PS3 around 200-240K and Wii is around 60-100K.

It is definitely intentional, not a mistake. GAF sales enthusiasts assume that the number one priority of these companies is strong sales from the start.
Probably more likely is they have just sunk a billion dollars into R&D for the new console, and every day they aren't in the market the Net Present Value of that investment declines. They want revenue and cash flow to balance out the sunk costs no matter what.
I mean consider the alternative. Invest a billion in a new console, wrap up the design, and then put it on a shelf for a year just so you have a better game lineup come launch. Give up all that revenue you could have had even with a weak lineup? Every company, unless they have incredibly eccentric management (or privately held), is going to opt to release as soon as possible to boost the cash flow now.

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Woke up to news that its 57k, not 55k as 'reported' last night. I think a lot of people in this thread who piled on Nintendo without waiting for confirmed numbers owe them an apology.

Man I sure do miss the days of the NPD numbers being available from the get go with out all the detective work. Then again, it is pretty fascinating to what the Neogaf wheels churn away to decipher the real numbers. I am not sure we would get there either if we didn't have MS openly giving their numbers each month. Sure its a gloating situation but ...it definitely is helpful.

Yet, I don't think it is just due to the lack of software. Wii U had an equally lacking initial lineup, yet it sold like hotcakes.
The main problem is the lack of something equivalent to Wii Sports.
Now, I know Nintendo tried her best to say "Look! The focus of this new console is the touch screen!", yet in a world FILLED with tablets this is a very feeble message and has not been received well.
Now... why to not create a LINK (no, not the elf...) between Wii and Wii U by publishing Wii Sports U? Something which could be familiar to Wii owners and could involve the use of both the touch screen and the "classic" Wiimote?
That would have been a great move and I still wonder why they are not yet pursuing it.
You may say "Well, because it could sound too much similar to Wii and be a limit for sales"... yet, just have a look at today's sales of the console. I don't think Wii Sports U could be even more harmful, right?

Well, in this case, they desperately need to push hardware sales. They're obviously not going to release all possible first party titles this year because it's impossible.
Awful Nintendo numbers, no other way around it. It's kind of sad to see the console flunking that bad already, the Nintendo fan in me always likes to hope for Nintendo to end up alright. But the Wii U is just so unappealing right now, even though my most anticipated games are on it.
It'd have to take a miracle for it to get out these next six months with respectable numbers, and despite some amazing things announced in the pipeline there's pretty much nothing they can do about it's state right now. It's not, but if they can build a nice stable community for indie developers they can suck up people who are into indie games. I'm only suggesting it so they would have a platform that differs itself from Orbis and Durango once they come out. Third party support will be the Wii U's weakest point so indie games would be nice.

I still can't believe just how abysmal the Wii U is doing. It's doing worse than the Gamecube. The Gamecube. After so many years of Wii domination it is fucking shocking to see these numbers. It was a given that 3DS would sell gangbusters, because Nintendo pretty much owns the portable gaming market but god damn. I didn't think they would regress back to Gamecube era of irrelevancy with their console division. It really seems like Nintendo is nothing now that the casual user base, who pretty much made the Wii the success that it was, has been ripped from under their feet and funneled into the mobile market.

I partially agree; as I've said, the lack marketing / retail push has clearly been intentional, but where Nintendo has erred is with the assumption five million would sell regardless. So it's bad, very bad, but not the fatal blow cold, hard indifference would be to a console given the usual launch marketing blitz.
