Meteorite crash in Russia

Those lumps of meteroite that must be scattered around are worth a fair amount of money. Would'nt surprise me if a sudden influx of meteorite hunters descended on Russia soon.

I bet the Russian version of Meteorite men are much much cooler than the US ones (living in sin and decadence)

looks like a huge explosion or something haflway through, what happened there? It almost looked like the columbia shuttle disaster rather than a meteor's regular burn into the atmosphere

I probably is just a regular burn up in the atmosphere, if you watch videos of the Californian meteor from last year it looks remarkably similar. The burn time and any possible explosion of a meteor in atmosphere depends entirely on it's composition. Unfortunately I don't have the training to analyze the various videos in order to find out what it was made of. :(

Have you ever seen a Delorean move through time?

The shuttle was full of fuel (liquid [ /solid ?] hydrogen and oxygen).
[edit:] And the debris was falling so fast, it acted much the same.

So this is the way the world ends.

Edit: I like how nobody in any videos gave 2 shits.
What do you expect drivers to do, scream like little girls? I'd say they curse much more than they usually do, all videos are full of "What the fuck is this?" and "holy shit" Russian equivalents.

Disappointed.

The thread tittle is misleading.

I thought there was footage of a huge impact explosion with lots of Russian women running half naked due to the early hours it happened.

Note direction of meteor trail in satellite vid shows FOR SURE this was unrelated to #2012DA14, which would have a north/south trail.

Someone's a little obsessed.

Too bad it happened in Russia. If it was a US city, the media would sensationalize the hell out of it for days, and it might lead to some better funding for projects like space based telescopes to find more objects (and get some good data too).

Yep, I can see it now on CNN:

Are You Prepared for a Meteor Strike?

if it was in the US we wouldn't have as many videos of people who drive around every where they go with a video camera (which seems like a regular thing in Russia?)

Any speculation going on about the mass of the meteor? I know that meteors in a meteor shower are usually no larger than a grain of sand. It's just that the amount of energy that comes from it hitting the atmosphere is so great that it becomes visible for hundreds of miles.

Just saw this... unbelievable. Any reliable info how big the meteor was?

edit: Also, stupid question - but do meteors start rolling as they hit the ground or does it stay at the spot?

10 tons it's been reported

Yeah, that.

What's up with Russian's dash cam, looks like every one and their mom has one there?

Insurance is cheaper if you have one. Google 'Russian Drivers' and watch the video results to see why. Put it this way, a giant meteor is nothing compared to shit he already saw that morning.

I didn't even notice raised voices. Pedestrians not even caring to look.

The vast amount of energy contained in a meteor that weighs so much traveling at 10s of thousands of miles per hour causes the larger body to quite literally explode on impact.

yo, are they sure asteroid 2012 DA14 is gonna miss earth?

Yes. 50 years ago we shot a rocket from Earth to the moon and landed a small module on the surface of the moon. Just last year we shot a rocket from Earth to Mars and used a rocket-powered sky crane to lower a semi-autonomous probe the size of a small car onto it's surface. Both of those missions required calculations that are many times more complicated than the one used on 2012 DA14.

But did they use the latest data on global warming?
