I probably is just a regular burn up in the atmosphere, if you watch videos of the Californian meteor from last year it looks remarkably similar. The burn time and any possible explosion of a meteor in atmosphere depends entirely on it's composition. Unfortunately I don't have the training to analyze the various videos in order to find out what it was made of.

well it basically did explode in the sky... thus the shockwave that caused all the damage.

Any speculation going on about the mass of the meteor? I know that meteors in a meteor shower are usually no larger than a grain of sand. It's just that the amount of energy that comes from it hitting the atmosphere is so great that it becomes visible for hundreds of miles.

The vast amount of energy contained in a meteor that weighs so much traveling at 10s of thousands of miles per hour causes the larger body to quite literally explode on impact.
