GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

On 4.1u, want to be able to transfer my games to my wii u. For some reason every time I try to update the firmware using the settings menu, it immediately pops up with error 32007

Tried doing the safe updates to 4.2 and it downloads the 15 pieces, but then it won't actually install it.

Am I screwed?

nvm, put wii in my router DMZ and it worked.

Having some troubles ever since Ive done DIOS MIOS install. I kinda just want to remove it since I can play before off my discs and now I cant. Majority of the time it just turns the wii off when I try to load a GC game. Now I cant load a GC game at all (black screen or turns wii off). Any suggestions?

edit: think it might of been my hdd...put in fat32 drive and now it works

edit2: well still having issues with other drive in there now
Yeah, it has to be FAT32 for Gamecube stuff and it wil interfere with playing discs normally most of the time. To go back to normal, use Dop-Mii to reinstall the official MIOS.

Interesting... Thanks for letting us know the solution as I think a few other people have had that problem and I never thought of this.

I'm running USB loader GX through the Wii option on my Wii U.

What's the deal with the component video output? It's 576i upscaled to whatever the Wii U is set to (720p in my case).

Anything I can do to avoid this? I've tried USB loader GX video patches but they have no effect.

My Wii is in storage far away and I'm probably going to give it away. I still have my games though.

Was thinking about picking up a used Wii U and modding it.

If I mod the Wii U (North America), will I be able to play Wii imports on it? I was recently given a PAL copy of Project Zero 2: Wii Edition (Fatal Frame 2). If I'll be able to play that, it will probably motivate me enough to go through with this.

I have a Japanese Wii U and managed to install the Homebrew Channel in Wii mode using the SSBB stage editor trick (and Japan doesn't do game rentals, so I had to find a used copy, which are usually quite expensive over here). Anyway, I installed Gecko so I can play my European Wii games on my Japanese Wii U. I don't have the games on me at the moment, but my parents will visit me soon, and I'll have them bring them for me.

Gecko should be able to play these European games right? Any quirks I need to pay attention to while trying to load Euro games on a Japanese console, video signal wise or otherwise? My Japanese copy of Brawl loaded perfectly through Gecko, so at least the app works for that.

Quick question:
Any way to make Configurable USB Loader to recognize games across SD and USB; at the same time? Or only one or the other?

The only options I see on the wiki are for: Ask, SD, USB. Any for both?

I have a couple of questions, since I'm still running a stock Wii. I have a version 4.3E menu, and I'm not really sure what my options are if I want to install the Homebrew Channel. I think the last game I played that came with an update was Skyward Sword. Anyway, questions!

1. What are my options for installing the Homebrew Channel with what I think is the latest firmware installed? Which one requires the fewest changes to my Wii? Would probably be happy if I don't have to mess with the boot parts. Boot sector errors are bad.

2. Can I remove it easily if I want to get rid of it?

3. Wii to Wii U transfer. I don't have a Wii U yet, but I plan on getting one. I've seen that it just ignores all the homebrew stuff, is that true? I don't want to lose my saves and downloaded games to this.

Still trying to decide if I want to do this. It seems pretty straightforward, but I figured it'd be best to ask if it really is that simple.

1) LetterBomb is easy as hell to setup and use. It only works on the Wii, since they "patched" that exploit for the WiiU, but it's really, really easy.

2) homebrew channel, itself, is just a channel. You are encouraged to install BootMii but it's technically optional to the process. Anything beyond that like IOS modifications to run USB loaders can be easily removed, as well.

3) The transfer ignored the homebrew, I know this from experience. You're safe.

One thing you forgot to mention is that, normally, when doing a Wii to Wii-U transfer, all your stuff on the Wii is deleted, but you can make a backup with Bootmii and then restore all the saves and data on the original Wii. Haven't done it myself, but a lot of people have with success.

I left it out because it even states that as part of the process before the transfer. Also because having your games on 2 systems, while (IMO) morally fine, is a legal grey area I'd rather not tough on if I can help it.

Been reading that GAF homebrew tutorial, too. So just checking if i got it right. BootMii can be used to make a backup of my Wii as is right now. And since it's a launch Wii, I'll likely get to do the boot2 option making it nearly impossible for me to brick my Wii if I mess anything up as long as I do a full backup first.

The Letterbomb is probably the easiest way to do it, and if I understand it right, it will install the Homebrew Channel. Or at least allow me to.

The Homebrew Channel is where the magic happens. Install that and use the Homebrew Browser to find the apps. And if that doesn't work, ask Google for them.

And, well... that's it, really. Isn't it? Sounds a lot easier than I thought it would be.

How big an SD card would you recommend? There's a 1GB one already in the Wii, but it's full of VC and WiiWare games as well as some save files. Got another 1GB one from a camera that's not in use at the moment, and of course the 2GB one in my 3DS. Which has some games on it, too. Should I make more room in the Wii System Memory? It's nearly full, could toss out some WiiWare games to free space.

1 or 2 GB is fine. Don't go over 2GB for homebrew installation, but 2GB is fine.

And yes, it really is THAT easy. The only system to softmod that is easier is the PSP, and that's barely easier.

I botched someone's ability to use the instrument add-ons for Rock Band 3. He's using a real disc but has homebrew on it. It was working fine before I told him to get the latest IOSes. What could the problem be?

And... done! Letterbomb used, Homebrew Channel installed. Installed BootMii as an IOS, didn't want it to load on boot. But the rest was easy. Really easy. Thanks for the advice.

It is a little... unnerving to see the Wii go into MS DOS look-a-like mode, though. I guess small filesize was a priority over fancy graphics. The Homebrew Channel itself almost looks good enough to fake being an official channel, at least until you open it. Which is nice.

So, what's good in Homebrew? I mean there's the obvious savegame backup, region free games, USB loading, and so on, but are there any great not-so-obvious programs to get? Can the Wii version of ScummVM read from disks? Would be funny to see my Wii boot up Full Throttle.

I've not used ScummVM, but Homebrew Browser is a wonderful tool to download and manage updates for emulators and other things.

A week or so ago I was going to grab Paper Mario off Club Nintendo with my coins, but was told I'd have to run an update on my Wii before accessing Nintendo's download store.

Are we at the point where I'd be safe doing so? My firmware was at 4.3 when I modded my Wii.

I'm having issues getting Ocarina codes working on USB CFG. I have the codes in both SD\Codes and SD\usb-loader\codes and when I select the game and go to manage cheats it says "Cheats: No File". Any clue why?

The files it's looking for are .txt files. They are used to select which cheats you want to create a .gct file. If the codes you have are already compiled .gct files, then you just need to turn on Ocarina and start the game for them to be applied. Otherwise, ensure the files are named correctly. Case may or may not be important, but the files must be named exactly in the way specified in the README or they will not be found.

Another one here with no 'DML' setting. I'm okay so far with playing my Gamecube discs but it's an utter pain in the arse swapping discs over and I haven't got my entire collection with me at the moment. Any idea how to get games to play from USB drive? I've followed the guide up until the point where you need to change the settings in CFG USBloader.
I'm not too arsed about import discs because I have a PAL and an NTSC Wii so it's mainly the backup issue.
I will get around to updating those instructions to support the new versions of DML at some point. I just don't have the time to fool around with the Wii at the moment. Try experimenting with the other options to see if anything works as there isn't anything that can really go wrong.

I was curious about something. DML worked, but Devolution was also released and is... "better" in some ways. The only issue I had was that I couldn't launch games without the GC disc in the drive because of Dev actually requiring that you generate a check, which CFG actually failed every time (another loader I used worked just fine with it). I see Dev loads up fine with newer/beta/alpha versions of CFG, but the check still fails. Is this something that should be looked into implementing properly? I found Dev to be a more robust solution than DML.

Is there a tool to transfer my Mario Kart and Brawl saves back to my Wii after I make the Wii U transfer? I assume I can't just copy them to and from an SD card because of the online component in the games.

Also, do I have to be on the latest firmware to do the transfer?

I used BootMii to do a full backup of my NAND before doing the transfer. After completing the transfer, I restored my Wii from this backup. That way I was able to keep my saves on both systems. I'm not sure if there's a tool/app for just backing up individual saves.

Anyone using a USB hard drive that doesn't need an external power supply? I have a. 500GB USB drive, works fine via USB only on my PC but no go on the Wii.

[edit] it does have a power in option, just hoping to find a solution that doesn't require another cord hanging around.

There are.

Also be very careful with Bootmii. We had one person in the thread who selected backup instead of restore. At the very least once a backup is made, make a copy of the nand file it made.

yeah, same with mine.

I have a 320gb in an enclosure that I use with a single usb cable and it works fine. It definitely needs to be a laptop drive, though.

Sorry if this has been answered, just wanting a quick answer...

Can I use Indiana Pwns in Wii mode on my Wii U? And if so, can I run any of my backups or my imported games? And! Can you still instal emulators?

I'm miffed about them taking DKC down from Wii VC and am considering importing Xenoblade (since it's so expensive on Amazon). Thanks!

Okay, I messed up somewhere.

When I tried DIOS MIOS, I couldn't get games to run off my USB Hard drive (I'm thinking I need to reformat it with a different cluster size. I just don't ahve the room on my hard drive at the moment to copy all my games over.

So I tried installing DIOS MIOS Lite to run them off SD Card and DID get them to work (the only problem being that it's a slow SD card so load times are significantly worse than the original).

Well, I never got around to fiddling around with it until I was just trying to play a Wii game from the disc (Fortune Street) and found it would not read the disc. I get a disc read error going through the disc channel as well as trying to load it through GeckoOS.

I'm aware DIOS MIOS doesn't allow you to play GC games once you install it, but I must've done something. Either that or maybe my launch Wii is finally giving out. Anything I can try to fix this? Maybe get DIOS MIOS off my system and start fresh?

I've been incredibly lazy about putting info into the GWHT, but it should work unless it's the Korean version:

http://wiiubrew.org/wiki/WiiMode

I used SmashStack on mine and have homebrew running, though I've not played with cIOS modifications yet, because it's a bit more involved and I'd rather not potentially nuke my WiiU.

Probably not the best place to post this, but it has something to do with homebrew so I'll give it a shot.

I discovered that my Wii power supply had died on me, so I went out and bought a new one. BootMii shows up, so I think I'm in the clear, but when going to Wii mode all I get is a blank screen. I'm unable to sync wiimotes or do anything. BootMii works fine though, so I figured I should at least back up my data if worse comes to worse.

Any tips before I ship it off to Nintendo/buy a new Wii?

What happens when you go to the homebrew channel? Does that also go to a black screen? If so I'd say the NAND is in a bad state...if it works then it suggests the system menu or an installed channel are at fault (which are fixable).

If the NAND is ruined (given the power supply died maybe a surge caused it and it didn't just fry the PSU) then in theory you won't be able to backup with bootmii. If you do perform the backup try to note where the bad blocks are. I don't know if it possible for NAND blocks to become bad rather than be born bad (Nintendo allow a certain numbers of blocks to be bad out of the factory) but if they can it might be something like the block containing the system menu died.

Its more a case of if you had a backup now would be the time to try and restore.

Hey guys, I just recently took the plunge into this whole homebrew thing and I'm loving it.

I have a quick question about the "snaps" covers in Genplus GX. I did a few by taking shots within the emulator and then open the files. They seemed to be 320x244 PNGs, so I spent hours creating my own cover art in the same format but they're not showing up in the menu.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong? I just saved them out as straight PNGS, do I need to export them as PNG8 or something?

thanks

I highly recomend Devolution over DIOS MIOS, as Devolution doesn't disable disc channel for GCN games when HDD is not detected, the compatibility is higher for what I know too, and by using actual Wii IOS 58, instead MIOS, it can get access to Wii controllers (in the future).

Do you store in the same folder as the original snaps? They need to have the same name as the game. Never tried that though =P

Yeah same name/directory.

I experimented a bit last night and I'm confused as ever.

I found a set online that someone else made and they work fine. I opened one of their files in PhotoShop and made a simple color adjustment and re-saved - still worked fine. They I opened that same original file, pasted my design on top, flattened the image and re-saved - doesn't show up anymore.

I don't get it.

Thanks for the reply Clipper. I know I'd asked if I was safe updating my Wii, but just to be sure...do I have to do anything before or afterwards, or will my Homebrew just work as normal after I do the system update?

I'd like to use some coins on some Club Nintendo titles for my Wii, but am a little paranoid that something will get screwed up.

Also, can homebrew be done on Wii U as well? I'm not familiar with the U, and I guess it enters a seperate Wii mode for bc?

Cool, does it perform better with audio-streaming games? How do I disable Dios Mios tho and have you got a guide for Devolution?
Also, does Devo have the function to play multi disc games through same folder's game.iso and disc2.iso?

It works perfect with audio streaming games, you don't need disable Dios Mios.
Yep, it supports game.iso/disc2.iso you just need press the EJECT button when the game prompt it and it will switch to disc 2, I've tested it only under USB Loader GX though.

Here's a guide http://gbatemp.net/threads/devolution-public-release.330554/
Here's USB Loader GX latest release http://www.mediafire.com/?323p2it1218o4wg
Here's a HBC tool to extract your GC saves https://code.google.com/p/gcmm/downloads/detail?name=gcmm_1.4a.rar&can=2&q=

You always can launch Devo under CFG but I'm not sure how do that.

Wow, that is super awesome! :O Very informative post, thanks!
I wanted to can Dios Mios just so that I could regain the ability to play games from the disc channel, that's all.
Wait, why would I need to extract my GCN saves? Do you mean that I can actually have virtual memory cards?! No more switching my memory cards in fear I'll wipe 'em while saving a JPN game?

I'm still pretty new to Wii homebrew, but I was up and running before with my brother's old laptop hard drive and manage to rip a few of my games (some didn't run properly though). Anyway I upgraded my hard drive and have a nice fat 1TB to play with now. The only problem is I can't get it to mount. I even ordered a Y cable which arrived today but still no dice. Is my hard drive maybe just incompatible with my Wii? :(

Edit: According to the site I bought it from it's an Adata ACH11-1TU3-CBK. Just checked Disk Management too and the single partition on there is active, primary and healthy.

I'm only a couple weeks into the Homebrew world myself. But I can say that GenPlus GX is a fantastic piece of software and the interface is miles above most emulators. Kudos to EkeEke, whoever he/she is.
