PlayStation 4: Web reaction to Sony's 'invisible' console

Well it gets problematic when the non gaming media jumps on the hype train for this conference. They expected something big. Some redefining things.

What they got are just some "questionable" features and games in "better graphics". They don't see why anyone with a PS3 or other consoles should spend more than 400$ for such an "update".
That new network was enough for me to switch. Plus that vita stuff was pretty sweet.

I don't know why everyone is so up in arms over the physical console not being revealed. They revealed all the specs, and showed games running on the hardware, the only thing they didn't show is what the plastic box will look like.

Anyone remotely familiar with the industry's history isn't surprised. A few of the out of touch media outlets are using this for sensationalism.

The majority of the gaming press response seems positive and even Ars came away impressed. That to me speaks volumes.

Yeah.. I forced myself to stay awake until the tangible information to be presented. It never was, and it left me with a funny feeling. I don't think it was Sony's best decision yet..

Tangible information? Were the Spec and games just not enough for you?

There's no way in hell they would reveal a price this early out with Microsofts machine still under wraps, and for the box itself....it's a box and its probably black, maybe white.

And you even got to see the controller, which most complain about when new consoles are on the horizon.

The media wanted an Apple-style event, with final hardware, pricing, and launch date.
In that case Microsoft had better wait until the last possible second to unveil the Durango so they can deliver to the media exactly that and not waste their time otherwise.

And if that means waiting until E3 instead of April... well, Microsoft should wait until E3.

But... but.... 8GB GDDR5! Who needs a box, a price, or a release date?

You're missing a major point. This feature brings the socialability of playing in the same room without them being in the same room. Remember in the old days, you'd have a friend call you up, and he/she is all "I just got this super awesome game called Super Mario Bros! You should come try it!" And then you'd go over there and try it out, then probably convince your parents to buy it for you. Rinse. Repeat. This is how games got hyped in the old days!

This is an evolution of that idea; that idea adapted for a social, connected world. For people who have friends who lives miles, states, even countries away.

Granted, maybe this isn't a big deal, but it looks like a potential..*ahem*...gamechanger for social, for a company that, frankly, has had a lot of trouble this gen developing a good social community.

The cloud stuff interested me a lot, even though I hate cloud-based BC -_-;.

I think you're confused. This doesn't encourage social relationships, it hinders them. Instead of having a human interaction with someone else you're now linked vicariously through controlling their console with your controller in addition to whatever normal voice/text communication would happen. A feature that would increase sociability would be if Sony created a feature where a game could force you to have someone physically bring over a dual shock controller that was linked to another system to finish some sequence on your system (lol). The more connected we are technology wise, the less social we tend to be.

New York Times:
New features cannot hide the fact that PlayStation 4 is still a console, a way of playing games on compact discs that was cool when cellphones were not smart.

Oh dear...

It's February and the night is young. They focused on games and specs and the rest will follow. We know there is a console and I am guessing they are finalizing the look for a reveal later. They still have E3 to go, folks. How could anyone not be impressed by the specs, features and two hours of games that they have in the pipeline? They more than delivered for such an early reveal.

Wired:
Talk is the cheapest thing there is. And that's basically what Sony did today: It espoused a philosophy, said the names of a lot of popular games, but didn't give us any real, concrete information in an age where it's more important than ever.

I'm assuming this is Chris Kohler. He's been pretty adamant/staunch, seemingly since the last big Nintendo Direct, in calling out for more information.

I'm not sure what information he was expecting though. They were not going to reveal everything today.

I actually thought that quite a few concrete things were shown/discussed.

But... but.... 8GB GDDR5! Who needs a box, a price, or a release date?

Heh. Announcing the PS4, and not showing the PS4, is a marketing fuckup on par with 599 and giant enemy crabs.

Can you imagine Apple coming out and saying, "Hey, we have a new iPad coming out, here's all the shit it can do!", and not actually showing the device? Pretty stupid, right?

The problem is everyone else in the eletronic world gives it up on the first date. You think samsung will do the SG4 presser and not show the device? Or say avaible 8 months from now? Sony clearly messed up here and does not understand how the world works now. When you announce you better well have more details than this and be closer to launch or you get destroyed by the press.

You're comparing a product that refreshes every year to something that does the same every 6. There's a lot more lead up

They probably don't want companies to think they can get away with hyped PR events where the company just showed clips and talked. No prices and other important info kept. No really surprised felt they came back empty handed, it's not the press' role to look out for Sony "but they need to keep price secretz from MS".

But... but.... 8GB GDDR5! Who needs a box, a price, or a release date?

The press apparently, those ignorant idiots.

I do think the conference - just as a conference, was kind of bad. I mean, it was boring. It went on way too long, and there was too much talking that said very little. Once they got into actually showing us things, it was cool. But felt way too much like a bunch of pre-hype without us knowing what was being hyped.

So I don't know. Personally, I'm blown away by the PS4 specs. So they already have me sold on the system. The conference didn't need to win me over. I'm already getting a PS4. I just thought it was kind of boring. And I'm not sure it was a good move by Sony. But that's just me.

That new network was enough for me to switch. Plus that vita stuff was pretty sweet.

Yeah sure for "us gamers" those features make sense, but someone without an affinity for games in general?

But I must admit, I was disappointed with this event. Didn't like those exclusive games...

How can you give final pricing for something potentially 8+ months before release?

Are the media fucking stupid?

That is why you don't announce things 8 months in advance these days. It was sony being stupid they should know how the electronic world works these days. They should of done this in may no freaking february. I told you all this would happen.

False equivalence. Unlike iPad you will not be carrying PS4 around like a mobile device with a screen. There is E3 for a reason. And given the recent addition of 8GB GDDR5, it could indicate that they are still developing the box to ensure proper fitting and cooling.

Also, it's "on par" not "peer".

Why wouldn't it?

Gauging the reactions here, many people were in the shutupandtakemymoney.jpg mood.

It's a bit different since they have to worry more about distributors than Apple does. Plus, developers need time to hype and talk about their games and giving them a few weeks to do so would just be a clusterfuck. This method would also be leaky as hell since distributors would need to get the heads up in advance. There would be leaked pictures and price points and all kinds of shit.

There are just too many moving parts.

A console is just a box. You don't carry the console around with you and interact with it directly on the console hardware. It's not even close to the same thing.

From an outsider's point of view, that incompleteness just means Sony wasn't ready to present.

As a gamer I love finding out what I can when I can. It's sad we can't have a glimpse into the PS4 future as early as possible.

It's kind of like a developer showing a game early and then getting roasted that there is bugs/screen tear/weak looking graphics. It's to be expected this early on things are still in the works. What are Sony to do for the next 8 months, sit and twiddle their thumbs on a completed box? If the PS4 were complete right now it would be launching in a few months, it's not complete, the holiday 2013 date shows this.

This fast food type industry is a pain. A little bit of patience never hurt anyone.

How is that comparable at all?

With an iPad the device is what you actually handle, has a screen that you NEED to look at/touch where as a console is just a box you plug into your TV, the important stuff is the controller – shown, the services – shown and the games – shown.

Some people just cant wrap their head around the fact games consoles need to be marketed differently to the latest iwhatever!

Cellphones aren't consoles. Cellphones get upgraded every year. They are fundamentally different types products. Expected them to be marketed the same way is stupid.

Quite possibly the stupidest post I've read in a while.

Not showing the final design of a console not due out until the end of the year is on par with $599?

Apple unveil their new phones and tablets a month or so before release. How is this the same thing?

And are you forgetting this was a conference in February, and not E3?

This is some some of the finest hyperbole I've seen in a while.

Reactions from their perspective seem fine to me.

What they are asking is, what are you doing different to vow me?

The answer is, not much, based on what was shown.

It's a powerful gaming machine focused on core gamers. In many ways, its more of the same. Which is what the mainstream feedback seems to be.

It's how I see it as well. It's a great machine for gamers no doubt about it but the Mainstream wont be pulled in simply by that. I'm not really an expert on the mainstream tastes tho.

OK. Replace iPad with any consumer product like a new car. It is still complete idiocy on the part of the company.

There is E3 for a reason. And given the recent addition of 8GB GDDR5, it could indicate that they are still developing the box to ensure proper fitting and cooling.

I fixed the typo seconds after I originally sent it, damn you're fast.

Anyway, it didn't have to be a functioning box. A mockup would have sufficed. Then these news sites would have actually had something to show on their front pages instead of giant question marks and derision.

Some people just cant wrap their head around the fact games consoles need to be marketed differently to the latest iwhatever!

Who is it you think Sony is actually competing with? However, as this is a company who dropped Vita on a market that did not demand it, apparently even they really haven't figured out yet that traditional console gaming is now 100% niche.

The fact that people are fixating on the fact that a plastic shell was not there, and completely ignoring everything else....the specs, the new features, the games , etc is pretty stupid.
They need something to drive E3 or else the press and everyone else will just focus on Durango when E3 hits.
Now Sony has the hardware reveal, pricing, exact date, more on things shown and more that was not.

Anyway, it didn't have to be a functioning box. A mockup would have sufficed. Then these news sites would have actually had something to show on their front pages instead of giant question marks and derision.

A mock up?
Why so those that want to look for things to gripe about can go on a tirade later that Sony lied about what it looked like and faked it?
If they do not have a final model , then they should not show anything.

Is it soo hard for these "journalists" to understand that some of us would prefer to play games on a tv versus our phone?? I mean have things got so far bad that what FEW gamers of us that are left have to defend the fact that consoles still have a place....

The New York Times response... is repungnant

This guy gets it.

The blogs and news sites will act as advertisement relays because people can see what they are buying.

Sony should've spent 5 minutes in Autocad making a black box with usb ports render, so journalists could find another reason for being perpetually butthurt.

they are ignorant idiots to expect a price for a device 8 months from release.

The press does not care about the product cycle. When they are called to a major presser they expect a lot more than what sony delivered. As I said in many other threads the world has changed since 2005-2006. I am getting a PS4 day 1 unless we get a 499.99 bomb. So I want this product to be successful.

If Sony wanted to do something this early it should of been a game play trailer thats it no presser. Inviting the press and all this hype was asking for a backlash from the press.

Completely baffled by the NYT comment.

Did they not watch the entre Gakaii section? Free to try games? Like it and buy it? Over teh shoulder social viewing/streaming? The whole emphasis on the expanded network?

NYT dropped the ball big time.

You are kidding right?

iPads and iPhones come out every year and get shown about a month or even weeks before release...this is not the same at all.

Lets assume Holiday 2013 is mid November, so 9 months before release and E3 is in June (ONLY 4 months away) you guys will have a good 5 months too ogling and awhing (and complaining im sure) at a box. So what is the problem?

From an outsider's point of view, that incompleteness just means Sony wasn't ready to present.

I think common sense should trump that notion but maybe that's me being too optimistic. If people can't discern why this conference was handled this way then well... I don't know.

I thinkbsome of those comments show the divide between media and peoplevwho enjoy playing video games. Most of thevgaming community is impressed from what was announced. I dont need gimmicks or ios type stuff.

they are ignorant idiots to expect a price for a device 8 months from release.

This.
Most people on here with any common sense knew that the price would not be there.
They have to be able to react to Microsoft in some fashion and have room to get the price as low as possible before committing.

They showed games, focused on features and great specs, but that is not enough? Unlike Nintendo, we know what is going to be in this thing and it's going to be great. Give them time to finalize the design and leave something for E3, for crying out loud.

I swear, you just can't please some people. You could bring them a truckload of gold bars and instead of being happy, they would complain about how you loaded it. Don't know about the rest of you, but I am just happy that:

- They announced it this early
- Showed a strong focus on games, specs and developers for two hours
- Described some of the killer features it will have.

It was a purely gamer-centric and developer-friendly conference. They showed more than enough and are understandably leaving some in the reserves for later. As it is quite early and they are not going to blow their entire load with the rest of the year to go.

Have patience, folks. The system sounds like nothing but good for developers and games. If you are not happy with that, then I don't know what to tell you.

not to mention that what the device looks like in that case has a direct impact on the actual usefulness of the device... and the follow up about the car is the same thing.

This.
Most people on here with any common sense knew that the price would not be there.
They have to be able to react to Microsoft in some fashion and have room to get the price as low as possible before committing.

its not even reacting to microsoft, technology prices drop fast. 8 months is a lifetime for computer parts

Like I said, 8GB GDDR5 may have thrown a wrench in the design. A box design unlike the hardware should not be as tedious to design. Plus, I would think they do not want to give something people can run with which is in such volatile state. Lastly, I would assume they are holding a few cards close to their chest for E3.

I want to scratch my face off when reading these but the reality is, this is what most mainstream potential buyers will be exposed to (despite my best efforts ;-)

Sony (as well as its competitors) will have to fight this mindshare iOS/android have now. Those phone and tablet games are good enough, and cheap to boot. The 360/PS3/Wii were born and developed during an age when consoles were still the go to platforms for gaming of any kind.

Outside of GAF level core gamers, selling to the folks who already have one of the three platforms and/or games on mobile, is going to be tough. Very tough.

I think its important to acknowledge that at the very least. The climate is certainly changed.
