Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I'm just downloading this now, never played a Monster Hunter game before and if we like it, me and a few mates will be picking this up at launch to co-op through. I so want to like it! Please be good!
Good luck, don't get put off by the fact the demo throws you in with no explanation, it's really a poor demo for first-timers.

Hmmm, I guess the demo gave me a bad impression then. I can see the appeal in the stuff you guys mention, but still not so sure it's for me. Probably doesn't help that I basically just ran circles around the enemies while hacking and slashing. That got boring really quick.

You can do that to the easier ones, but later on they'll take off half your health in one go, and the attacks have huge hitboxes. It becomes much more important to be getting in on their weak spots too, rather than getting the odd hit on their back or something.

There's a solid curve to it, unlike certain other games panned for awkward controls, they actually fit an actual purpose and design style in Monster Hunter that you really grow accustomed to, it's all very deliberate. I don't think these demos are ever good examples though, as they kind of just throw you into the thick of it rather than starting you off with some light work and getting used to the movement and commands.

Luckily, for new comers though, they also nerf the difficulty every god damned new iteration, apparently taking steep declines with Portable 3rd and Tri G, which is just jolly after how easy Tri already was after Dos.

I'm going to keep whining about this until they make difficulty modes for the game and bring it back to classical style, where the items and gathering actually had a damned purpose.

Best advice I can give you:

1) Use the camera lock on. When you're in the same area as the monster, there will be an icon on the touchscreen. Hit it and a red crosshair appears over the monster on the icon. This then allows you to hit the left shoulder button and it'll focus on the monster.

2) Don't get discouraged! It takes time to really understand the gameplay mechanics. Monster Hunter games are so rewarding and it's hard to see the forest through the trees as you first start out. Things will appear to be funky, like scrolling through items and unstoppable animations.

Good luck & good hunt!

Holy crap the picture is crystal clear on my 1080p TV. Makes me wanna play more games in 1080p. Load times are much shorter than they were on the Wii, makes moving from area to area way more tolerable.

What's the reason behing Capcom wanting to lower the difficulty? To make it more accessible to newcomers ? I mean, that's kind of pointless when there's still a fairly big learning curve to the combat system among other things.

Aspire people!

If you guys want to see something more like how the game really starts, pick the Plesioth (hard) fight and jut run around and explore without going to the beach where Plesioth is. That's the area right outside the village you start in. At the beginning, you get quests to go into this area and kill those little deer and raptors, collect mushrooms and herbs, mine the ore deposits, and catch bugs. You'll find a pick and a bug net in the big trunk by where you start.

I'm guessing you can't play multiplayer in the demo? Either way I'm downloading the Wii U version now and hopefully I like it!

I wish I could play on the gamepad though. :(

Image quality >>>>> everything. There is nothing you can do asset or post processing wise to a game that makes it pop like good image quality with max resolution, downsampling, good, non-budget AA, etc.

If it was up to me, I'd still be on PS2/Gamecube graphics for consoles but downsampled, 60 FPS and with 8X AA. :lol

I probably didnt play the demo long enough but i really miss my wiimote/nunchuck controls. I use the long sword and couldnt figure out how to sidestep and attack like i used to. Any ideas?

The WiiU version looks pretty delicious to me, don't know what the problem is. Do we know if the final version is going to be 60 fps or what Capcom bullshitting us?
The 3DS version is pure sex though, dear god that looks sweet.

The Lagombi was pretty easy, got it on the first try. My skills were a bit rusty though. Haven't played Tri in a while.
The Plesioth needed 2 tries. I really needed to get used to the underwater controls again. The lock-on is definitely helpful though.

People actually used the Wii Remote with MH Tri? Oh my god, so not for me, I used it just long enough to recoil in horror before I went to the store and bought a CC Pro.

High time commitment/low online player numbers, I think. People complained with tri that if you didn't have 4 people who knew what they were doing, monsters took too long to kill before the time limit. So instead of it being easier for you to co-op, it was actually easier to just solo your way through the game for most people, thus exacerbating the problem for online players...

People should really read the manual first. Or atleast right after you tried a weapon.

Tri is balanced for 4 players and 3U is balanced for 2.

That makes so much sense due to the videos I've seen showing 4 people take down monsters pretty easily.

Fixing hitboxes is what made it "easier".

In MH Tri, you had to press two of the face buttons at the same time. Try X + A. Unfortunately, the long sword can't actually do a normal sidestep, instead you perform a sweeping motion with the sword that uses the momentum of the swing to push your character to the left or right as a makeshift dodge manuever.

ARGH! Why do I have to be so busy right now. This always happens to me, fuck my life, I want to play this demo again so badly.

I'm gonna record my Plesi hunt with Bowgun when I get the time. You guys should do the same! Want to see how good some of you are. 8)

I love the dual swords. My second time I played the"easy" monster I beat him so quick. The first time I had like 5 mins left warning and shit. Didnt see one at all this time though playing on the Wii U maybe sped up the process.

I see. I appreciate the insight, but I'm still not sure this game is for me. I'm thinking it's probably just not for me. We'll see. I may or may not change my mind later on.

They reverted the bowgun system back in this one didn't they? No more terrible mix and match with limited, terribly tuned parts?

Thanks. I'll try it after I play some rounds in Tekken.

Oh hey, my set from Tri. :D

I believe so. They ditched the bowgun customization after Tri.

Oh thank god, it was a really cool idea in theory... then the execution and the removal of bows destroyed ranged in the game outside of random gimmicks.

Just defeated the Lagombi using Sword & Shield. My first ever monster hunt! First try, he fell down just about time. Feels good man. There's a huge sense of "Fuck Yeah" when he fell.

I'll try another weapon later, maybe ranged. The sword & shield feels too...vanilla.

THIS PLESIOTH FUCKER I SWEAR TO GOD I REFUSE TO LET HIM KEEP BEATING ME I WILL KILL HIM I WILL TAKE HIS LIFE THIS IS FUCKING BULLSHIT FUCK YOUUUUUUUU

I can't believe it I can finally post on the GAF! After years of stalking this site in the shadows. Thank You Elder Dragons in the sky! Monster Crack demo, and permission to post on GAF!
Today is a good day!

Well the Dual Blades seem pretty easy to use and they ditch decent damage (plus the one they give you have Para effect, I love Para weapons!), killed Lagombi with them much faster than with SnS or the Bow.

You chose so very wisely as to which topic to put that ever important first post in. Congratulations and welcome!

Why does the 3DS version look and run better than the Wii U one? For that matter, why does the original wii version run better? I'm not too happy bout this. Thinking maybe the 3DS version should have had the online mode.

So, I've never played a Monster Hunter game before, but really wanted to try it out.
Downloaded the demo for the 3DS, selected the rabbit, and the sword + shield.
I got destroyed by the bunny, but I want to try it again.

Impressions:
The graphics are lovely, and the 3D effect is great!
Can't cancel attacks halfway. Wat.
Enemies are tough. This isn't a hack-slash game.
The armor is bombastic.
Sword + shield is not for me. lol

I want to play some more until I rip that bunny to shreds.

When you turned off the two "shake to..." options, it's arguably superior. Camera control is digital no matter what. SnS you could use an item without stopping to hold R. LS fade slash was minus and twist the controller in the direction you wanted to dodge to. Bowgun, quitck aim was way better because you weren't suddenly using the camera controls to aim. I could go on and on.

Nintendo WiiU users in preparation for monster hunter I bought a WiiU.

Now question how can I unify my 3DS and WiiU Nintendo network accounts? Is it even doable or is all that's shared is the club Nintendo?

3DS doesn't have accounts for online.

How do I play this? What is going on? Why does this monster have infinite health?

you can't see the monster's hit points, and consider it a boss fight.

please don't get discouraged! pick a weapon, practice away from the monster and take advantage of your companions (let them take the damage). control is 'weird' but it will make sense eventually. always be aware of your currently health and stamina, heal away from the monster.

this demo is not very newbie friendly, but i'm pretty sure the real game will have an extensive tutorial like in MH3.

Thank U all! I been a register member for years, but today I was finally blessed with the right to posts.

I'm TheWon aka JodeciDeion! You someone posted one of my videos recently! So I had to get on here and say thanks!

It's a video of the Demo released today. Surrounded by a very anime presentation! I do a lot of videos on Youtube. So I will be uploading a lot of footage of this game. If you see me online please join me maybe you will end up in a video of mine! Thank You all for the warm welcome. Now it's time to do a video of the 3DS demo!

Only got to play through Lagombi so far. Beat it in just a little under 20 minutes because I kept pressing the wrong buttons. Camera also messed me up somewhat but it got better after I figured out the lock on stuff. Also only managed to try the Hammer (easiest weapon) before my system died.

Will try to fight Plesioth once my 3DS is charged.

Is it me or does the demo feel neerfed?? It could be the pre set armor selections...or maybe the enemy difficulty is adjusted, either way Plesioth felt a little on the easy side. Anyone else feel this? And I just checked out vids for Guran-Miraosu...never expected the new elder dragon showdown would take place in the water.(Though I suppose it makes sense.) I've been playing MHFU for so long I think I'll need to brush up on my water combat lol.
