Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Okay, I'm going to sound really noobish but how does one go deeper underwater? That Piesoth (sp?) on the 3DS version avoided most of my attacks by virtue of being underwater.

Press B and circle pad down and up to go up.
I don't really like the underwater monster; longsword did me okay though (I didn't survive though).

How is the demo on a normal 3DS (or XL) without the CPP? I'm going to get a 3DS XL soon, but I have no desire to buy a CPP for it, and as this'll be my first MonHun game, I'm curious to see if I'll have to fight the controls or not.

I don't like the controls at all w/o a CCP. You move your guy with stick, and they put a digital dpad on the touch screen you use with your thumb.

Just played the demo (both on 3DS and Wii U) and...

Land combat is really good without it. Underwater may get some getting used to.

Variable framerate feels a little sloppy, especially as the game goes sub 30fps in places (on Wii U).

Strangely the 3ds version of the demo as far as I could tell seemed to really be a steady 30. The animations looked pretty good as well. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised.

Now, fighting underwater without dual sticks and the crappy nub is a nightmare... but the graphics weren't bad at all.

They're okay imo, but I'm used to MH controls. Camera can get a bit wonky but there's a button that makes it center on the monster when you press L, which is pretty neat.

Otherwise there's a virtual d-pad on the touch screen but you can't customize it on the demo (you can change its size in the full game), which makes it a bit awkward to use (it's too large so reaching the left side is not comfortable).

Never played MonHun before, went to sleep when this thread was on page 4 got up and downloading still made it to page 16

going to get food hopefully will be ready to jump into the Wii U version when I get back

Failed my 2nd try, using Hammer. Time runs out. What's the best strategy using hammer?

Hit roll, hit roll. When playing alone, you should play defensively with that weapon. When you learn monster movements and attacks, you can plan your pound attacks to hit them right in the head. There are hidden meters in the monsters like stamina and after a certain amount of pounding to the head, monsters will KO and fall to the ground with stars around their heads for several seconds allowing other players to hit hard to reach spots or for a general pounding. That is what makes hammer users godly.in multiplayer.

I have seen some crazy hammer pound timings online.

Hammer is useful for stunning monsters and breaking parts, as well as dizzing the enemy. It's a great offensive weapon because it lets you move around while being able to strike at a moments notice. That said; Hammer is a bit different than most other weapons in that it charges up. When you have the hammer out, you want to charge up while holding down the run button to move around. First 'flash' during charge up with perform a quick charge forward, sometimes good for hit a monster's head while it's low, plus this is really easy dodge out of after the hit. Second (final) 'flash' will unleash a whirlwind attack, which is good for getting in multiple hits. Or if you release the charge while standing still, you'll do a really big smash.. but be careful not to knock teammates out of the way doing this. You can obviously attack without charging as well, with the standard three hit combo. Keep in mind the hammer is a pretty short weapon and you might find yourself at a disadvantage with some monsters.

Just keep practicing. Half of monster hunter is learning how the monsters fight, the other half is learning the weapon. Plenty of Youtube videos explaining weapons as well, if you want a bit more of an indepth look.

Played the demo on both platforms and loved it, gonna jump on that Amazon deal and preorder both. Pretty sure I've convinced my wife to check it out for cross platform co-op goodness.

You guys that have no clue what's going on should probably watch a few of those Youtube videos with players that know what they're doing. Sometimes it's better than trying to explain.

Keep in mind, MonHan also involves a lot of crafting, piecing together armour sets for different skills, gathering, different goals for quest (trapping, delivery quest, etc), learning not only monster patterns, but also their type weaknesses.. so this demo is really only a small taste.

New to MH. Is the time limit a part of the actual game?

Yes, but the time limit is usually 50 minutes in Quest. It does come in to play because early on you will have very weak weapons which will really press you for time when trying to slay a large monster and later on some monsters have a massive amount of hit points. Obviously as you progress with new weapons and armor, early monsters will be able to go down much more quickly though. A Great Jaggi might take you 40 minutes to kill your first time through, but after you're deep into the game, you'll be able to slay a Great Jaggi in a few hit.

I just played the 3DS demo - I don't get it. I really don't understand.

Its a skill based action game where you kill monsters and use their parts to make better stuff. All those weapon builds you see on the selection screen have different armors and weapons based off different monster types. Each of those can have varying abilities and types that give you certain skills or more damage against other monsters. While your equipment gets stronger, unlike a regular RPG, you success always depends on you. Its not for everyone and it can be time consuming to learn because of its steep learning curve, but the pay of is enormous.

What the demo doesnt convey, and could never really, is the feeling of carving items and building up a giant arsenal of weapons and armor. The crafting of those said armors and countless other consumable items adds alot of depth and complexity in addition to the joy of mastering a weapon's style.

OMG IT'S A GIANT FUCKING RABBIT so cute

Call me a sucker, call me an idiot, I know exactly what's wrong with this game, I can see what's wrong with it. Yet I'll 100% buy this no questions asked. Already played through the demo 5 times, will definitely play it a couple more times. March 22nd so far away. ;_;

(WiiU version)

It's not for everyone. I tried a demo of one of the PSP titles a long time ago and didn't get it, then bought MH Tri two years ago and.. still didn't get it.

It either clicks or it doesn't. :(

plus the satisfaction of beating the monster, specially in team and underwhelmed

New to MH. Is the time limit a part of the actual game?

yes but usually you have a 50 minute time limit, and unless your unprepared or using equipment that is underpowered should be more than enough time for most hunts plus extra time for gathering resorces, trolling cats etc.

I felt it was a bit frustrating and, well, tiny? Granted, I am new to the 3DS anyway and have only spent time with Fire Emblem. I need to play Plessy again and use the digital D-pad. I was very annoyed trying to use the stick to move and the hard D-pad to change the camera to dive.

I also had a strangely difficult time properly gauging distance to the mob. Kept whiffing. I can't wait to see how the Wii U Demo is tonight.

New to MH. Is the time limit a part of the actual game?

Yes. It is almost always 50 minutes except for certain quest types. It only really comes into effect at the beginning of the game as you battle with weaker weapons, and almost never in multiplayer, again outside of a few gigantic monsters that are designed to take a couple times to beat.

Edit: Dammit! I am slow to answer some of this stuff. You guys take it from here.

Yeah, fuck Plesioth, only played the Lagombi portion over and over. Plesioth might be my least favourite MH monster.

I've put in 200 hours in Tri (my first MH) and sought out the newest PSP versions of the first and second generation games afterwards.

I don't even think that much of the games, but as soon as I get my hands on one, it's just one long obsession with me.

Me neither. It seems like something I could get into if I invested some more time into it, but I think my Wii U bux next month are going to go toward Lego City. I may pick it up in April or May.

These demos make the purchase decision pretty easy. I don't want the game on the 3DS. I can control it well enough with touch screen dpad but don't like the feel of that nor the small screen. Especially compared to seeing the game the TV. Some games this doesn't bother me but it does here.

I am really out of practice. I could beat the easy boss fight on the 3DS with the dual blades but ran out of time with the long blade on the Wii U against the same boss. Need to get my timing and positioning down better. I thought they had added a target lock of some kind with these versions? Or is that not the case?

The demo is just as bad as the Monster Hunter Tri one. Not instruction on controls for people. Just tossing you right into the fire. A better demo would be one to explain combat like in the game. Then enough where you just hunt normal creatures. Then a third part where you fight a big creature. This demo is going to turn a lot of people off the same way the MHTri demo did.

The regular game allows you to build up to the first boss fight. You can do other missions over and over again until you are comfortable with the combat and maybe just waste the first big fight to learn the creature's movements and attacks and then go at it for real on the second try.

Those not liking the game or being turned off on it should rent the game if you can or see if you can rent MHTri if you have the option to see what the very beginning of the game is. Why Capcom doesn't allow for this with demos is something I don't understand.

Using the target lock on and double L tap to recenter the camera did away with any problems I had with camera control using the d-pad or digital d-pad.

Wait, I can roll? No wonder I keep getting thrashed even after circling it to land an attack.

You know the manual has the explanations right? I know nobody reads manuals, but I think Monster Hunter is one of the few games that would be better to read the manual first or while you're playing the game. :p

I'm one of those that don't get it. Guess this game is just not for me, just doesn't seem fun.

Yup, same here. I even get the Wii version a significant amount of time because it was the one game my friends were playing.
I like the crafting and messing around with food and all those miscellaneous items but I still don't understand the gameplay or the love some people have for it.

Tap L to center on the monster (not target lock, just on the monster at that moment). You can set it to single or double-tap in the options.

Fucking hell, my muscle memory for the claw is betraying me especially with aiming with the bow.

Also, in case any of you guys didn't realize, the blue box near base camp has goodies in it for you to raid.

Gotta learn how to underwater weave. Which is arguably still a bitch, but ducking and weaving man.

I wish they made elaborate traps for underwater play. Like huge wooden rams that set off giants nets, etc, etc.

Yay for the return of DS. My baby's are back.

The controls on DS work surprisingly well, I honestly think a lot of the complaints have yet to work out the lock on and camera controls using the L button. Before I worked those out it was a chore to do anything, but now even as a first time player I'm able to take down the easy monster with ease, although I'm not game enough to try the hard one again just yet...

Lots of mixed reactions in here. I beat it with almost every weapon and I still love great sword and dual swords the most. This demo is the best thing on Wii U right now <3

Never ever played a monster hunter game in my life but decided to try out the 3ds demo. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and the first monster kicked my ass. Are there any good introduction videos avalible on youtube for complete noobs like me?
