Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

How does lock on work? I hit the icon on the touch screen and it seemed like nothing changed.

Clicking it changes the function of the L shoulder button. By default, the L shoulder button will focus the camera behind the hunter. When you click the monster icon on the touch screen the L shoulder button will instead focus the camera on the monster. Really useful in the water.

The icon sets the camera to either re-center behind you or center on the monster (you need to have engaged the monster to active this though). It's not a true lock-on.

One of the helper boomerangs hit Lagombi to finish it off.

I've been enjoying trying all the weapons out but what a buzz kill. In the middle of a hammer animation for goodness sake! What a killsteal!

Oh, glorious gunlance. How I love thee. There's nothing quite like sticking a wyvern's fire shot right in a monster's face. Now even underwater! :D

I don't like the controls at all w/o a CCP. You move your guy with stick, and they put a digital dpad on the touch screen you use with your thumb.

Land combat is really good without it. Underwater may get some getting used to.

Now, fighting underwater without dual sticks and the crappy nub is a nightmare... but the graphics weren't bad at all.

I felt it was a bit frustrating and, well, tiny? Granted, I am new to the 3DS anyway and have only spent time with Fire Emblem. I need to play Plessy again and use the digital D-pad. I was very annoyed trying to use the stick to move and the hard D-pad to change the camera to dive.

I also had a strangely difficult time properly gauging distance to the mob. Kept whiffing. I can't wait to see how the Wii U Demo is tonight.

These demos make the purchase decision pretty easy. I don't want the game on the 3DS. I can control it well enough with touch screen dpad but don't like the feel of that nor the small screen. Especially compared to seeing the game the TV. Some games this doesn't bother me but it does here.

Hmm, not sounding good for the non-CCP 3DS controls.

Ya it's pretty interesting to hear newcomers having problems with the rabbit. Still I remember first playing trying to use a great sword against a Great Jaggi. Just to slow for me at the beginning.

Also if you playing on a 3DS it feels better on a XL than a regular 3DS. Just to small, but then I was trying to record for a Youtube video. So maybe with out the extra stuff in my way it might feel better.

Tap L to center on the monster (not target lock, just on the monster at that moment). You can set it to single or double-tap in the options.

Ah that's right. Thanks.

Well canceled the 3DS version and just get the order for the Wii U. I might get it later on but at the moment not comfortable with the 3DS. Going to save the rest of my demo play sessions to try it out again sometime down the road.

Yeah. I think people assume the bigger weapon is better because of the damage. I always found that unless you really knew how to use those weapons well they'd get you killed most times. When I first started playing MHTri I ended up getting frustrated until I just went with the sword and shield. The game starts you out with it for a reason. It's the easiest to control. Less damage but you stay alive longer and can move quicker. Allow you an easier time to kill things, gather, and then move out of the way during normal hunting too. Mobility early on is key I found.

Those having trouble with the demo I recommend using the sword and shield and see how you do. Then try the different weapons to see how they feel at the camp instead of going for the monster right away.

Holy cow, monster won't die. I think I can grow to like it, but maaaaan, 40 minutes boss battles sound a bit hard to get used to.

Thank you!

I like the concept but honestly the demo isn't doing "it" for me and I think it's the frustration of trying to learn in single player with a time limit. I didn't die and had the easy monster staggering 2-3 times but it kept running away and I guess I couldn't finish it off.

I plan on getting Lego City Undercover and may pick this up after completing it since they come out the same week.

Never ever played a monster hunter game in my life but decided to try out the 3ds demo. I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing and the first monster kicked my ass. Are there any good introduction videos avalible on youtube for complete noobs like me?

Well most intro guides are usually about getting into the main game, which is different than the demo. All I can suggest is read the manual for sure (I've probably said this a dozen times in the thread lol). You may also want to check out videos of people hunting a Lagombi.

Here are some:

Btw, to all of the new chums, here's some stuff I think ought to be said

- What you're playing in the demo is simply the hunt. Usually the structure of Monster Hunter is

A| Selecting a map to gather supplies, doing so
B| Returning to HUB town, Build Weapons, Potions, Armour, Traps, Status Effects
C| Sell/trade misc stuff to build/buy more stuff
D| Meet with chums (online) and choose a monster to hunt
E| Hunt/Merk monster, loot better items
F| upgrade to better stuff

Obv in the demo you're missing out pretty much everything but part E, which is inherently less satisying as you're given default gear and it completely lacks the satisfaction of working your way up.

Game is MIIIIIIIIIIILES better online as well.

So deff look into it more if you're semi interested, it's a fabulous series and the demo doesn't do it justice.

I didn't die and had the easy monster staggering 2-3 times but it kept running away and I guess I couldn't finish it off.

Something else to note is that this series is HARD. When me and one of my good friends first played it co-op back in the day, it took us the best part of a week to actually kill something.

You know the manual has the explanations right? I know nobody reads manuals, but I think Monster Hunter is one of the few games that would be better to read the manual first or while you're playing the game. :p

I read it. I read the explanations of each weapons in particular, but I must have missed the dodge one.

Holy cow, monster won't die. I think I can grow to like it, but maaaaan, 40 minutes boss battles sound a bit hard to get used to.

When you build up your armour and weapon arsenal, they get easier. To the point where they appear while you're fighting another monster, and you just ignore it and focus on the real target.

man those controls lol. ^ above post

I was playing the bow class, kinda hard to aim with it on 3ds that is.
I'll try wii U when I get home

Dove right in with my beloved switchaxe and went to work, all of my muscle memory came back and I was doing quite well. I then tried some of the new weapons (gunlance), enjoyable but definitely will take some time to learn the fine nuances. I plan on going through all the new weapons to give them a try. Also looking forward to being able to customize the controls and touchscreen.

Tried out the demo. I beat the easy monster, which was more challenging than I expected. It's kind of weird because it felt almost like Dark Souls combat or something. Can't complain about that. I have never played a Monster Hunter before by the way. I will try out the hard monster later. Seems like a great game to co-op with someone.

It was fun. I still plan to buy the game! I think it seems like a game I'd invest a lot of time into.

EDIT: Tried sword & shield. Is that good for a beginner or should I try something else?

I guess start by looking up the controls and how each weapon works.

http://monsterhunter.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Control_Settings (not all the weapons listed unfortunately...)

There's a bunch of other stuff to learn, but that should help explain how the combat works at least.

EDIT: Tried sword & shield. Is that good for a beginner or should I try something else?

Yeah, that's THE beginner weapon

Gotta learn how to underwater weave. Which is arguably still a bitch, but ducking and weaving man.

I wish they made elaborate traps for underwater play. Like huge wooden rams that set off giants nets, etc, etc.

Yay for the return of DS. My baby's are back.
Oh, I know how to beat him, I just fucking hate how it plays. :p Some monsters just click with you and others leave you cold, everyone's got their favourites.

LIKE THAT BIG RABBIT THAT'S SLIDING AROUND so cute

Sword and Shield are great beginner weapons because they have offensive and defensive capabilities, with short, quick attacks and fast recovery time. Also allow you to use items without putting away your weapon. The best weapon to start with, imo.

But everyone's got a favourite, so make sure to check out the other weapons as well. Try them all and you'll find the 2 or 3 you want to come back to.

How do you lock on in the 3DD version? Demo sold me on the concept; I can see the appeal. I'll end up with the Wii U version.

EDIT: I see the lock on was explained above.

Ughhh, using a bow underwater is no good. Managed to kill Plesioth with maybe 1 minute left.

That wide arrow rain is perfect for him though. I wonder how the damage compares to the explosive rain that most rapidbows seem to have.

Reading some of the newer players' experiences makes me giddy for the game all over again. I can't wait for it to come out and hear stories of players cutting their teeth on Barroth.

Lots of people recommend it, but I think it's a terrible beginner weapon. Dual-swords is probably better because it's faster than SnS and you should be in the habit of dodging rather than blocking anyway. I am not a fan of DS because it's kind of a boring weapon, though.

Can anyone who is used to playing MH on the PSP or Vita give me an idea of how it feels on a OG 3DS? Debating whether to play the demo tonight.

Sword and Shield a great beginner weapon. Dual Swords and Long Sword are pretty easy to dive into as well. Those are pretty much the 'fast weapons', which punish you less for attacking at the wrong time, so you can easily dodge out of the way.

Hammer and Switch Axe have some odd nuances that might make them a bit tricky, but they're not bad to pick up and play with.

Great Sword has a really tough learning curve and I wouldn't recommend it for beginners. Ranged weapons are in that category of steep learning curve as well, in my opinion.

That said though, even the newcomer friendly weapons have a lot of depth to them you'll only discover while playing. Try out everything, but just beware each weapon plays quite a bit differently with varying degrees of difficulty.

Finally beat the bunny on 3DS with dual blades.

It kept running away, which was kind of a pain, but made it interesting. Took well over 10 minutes to finally take it down but it was a lot more satisfying now that I found a weapon that worked well with the way I was playing. Figuring out how to lock on and hitting L definitely helped and made the experience a lot better.

Gonna go back to the Wii U demo and try to replicate what I did on 3DS. If all goes well, definitely gonna consider picking this up, despite earlier reservations.

The longer you play, the quicker they fall. Better equipment and growing skills make quick work of monsters you used to struggle with. It is immensely satisfying to fell a monster in a few minutes after struggling with it for half an hour the first time.

If there's a game where you undertake a real journey to get to the end, both as the character in the game and as a player, it's Monster Hunter.

and that rathalos backward jump + fireball attack = most of the time instant death

I guess the longsword or dual blade is better for me. Sword & Shield excels in defense I suppose, but I rarely stopped to defend.

SnS would be a great beginner weapon if not for the reliance on elemental effects, which new players probably won't understand very well. I used to recommend a fire SnS to people having trouble with Khezu.

SnS is still a very mobile and nimble weapon so dodging with it is quite easy. But being able to block is always useful, especially early on before you can get earplugs.

Fighting the Barroth for the first time was amazing. It'll kick your ass and teach you a bunch of MonHan lessons before you end up beating it. Probably on your 6th (or more) attempt. Good memories.. good memories..

Can an expert from MH-GAF make a "Monster Hunter for Dummies" thread? Haha I feel like myself and many other newbies might need it!

Anways, I just tried out the demo on Wii U, and the game plays and feels nice. I think I might have to buy a Pro Controller to fully enjoy this though, but not sure if I want to miss out on the second screen features. Downloading on 3DS now.

Never really played MH before, got totally owned by the Lagombi on my first try against it with the great sword. Second time around, picked the lance, somehow came out on top. I sort of want to keep fighting it until I learn how to take it down with little trouble, but the replay limit is rearing its ugly head. Theres a ton of weapons, and two different monsters requiring totally different approaches, theres no way 30 times is enough for me

don't think it counts as a replay if you don't quit the software. since i don't play anything else on my 3ds at the moment i'll probably have the demo running till it releases.

I would say Vita > 3DS without CCP > PSP

I just couldn't get into MHFU on PSP because of the claw controls. In MH3U on 3DS, there's a virtual D-pad on the right side of the touchscreen. It's not great, but at least it's better than the claw. Of course it's best to just have a right analog stick, like with the Vita. Unfortunately the 3DS demo doesn't support CCP, so I can't comment on that yet.

One of the cool new features in MH3U is the "lock on". I think it was added to compensate for the shoddy camera controls, but it really works well and fits the game just fine.

Khezu was a monster that you could ledge, though. You could pretty much ledge all the monsters in freedom 2 (and possibly unite, but they made the ledges tougher to use) up to maybe rathalos or azure rathalos.

I mean that's what the ledges were there for, weren't they? :P

Played a bit on 3DS, err, unimpressed.

The shadows are horrific, I already miss the 2 foot shadows, they're unbelievably pixelated.

Camera as expected is hard and makes me want the XL Pro.. which isn't announced for NA...

Wii U will be where it's at for me then, I was going to get this day 1 on 3DS, but I'm shocked that in the first 5 minutes of trying it on 3DS it just is not working coming off the Wii version.

Also the game does run at this middle ground framerate, it probably is 45fps, smoother than 30, but not 60 smooth. And it does automatically put on AA in 2D, neat.

I think the textures are better here because they blend much better together, they're blurry, but they blend really well because of the simpler detail, MH4 seems to try too hard to be more detailed and falls flat.

I've completed both Freedom Unite and Portable 3rd and the game controls much better on the OG 3DS, you don't even need the second analog attachment due to the new targeting system. Plus the touch screen camera is always there just in case you need to make subtle changes to your viewing angles. Also the best thing is you don't have to worry about claw cramps anymore.
