Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Unleashing that fully charged hammer pound and spamming the upswing makes for a great teammate. Haha.
Apologies to everyone I've ever done this to.. it was by accident

I always do it after the quest is done and everyone is done carving. Great way to celebrate lol.

I like snap-lock myself. Sounds quick, and that is what it is. Not lasting. Lock in general is probably not the best work to use in there though, since that tends to imply that it sticks to and stays on the target.

Both of these are good too.
Man I suck at coming up with names.

For the new people, do bear in mind that with longer weapons like longsword and switch axe you need to learn to be mindful of your surroundings because once you get into multiplayer you will send your group members flying if you're not careful.

Thank me later after upswinging you from Plesioth
right before you land your wyvern fire :D
.

Pretty tough. First time playing besides a few minutes with the Wii version. Finally switched to the Monster-Focus Cam and it was a lot easier.

Still, tough ass game and that was on the easy dude but I figure it will just take time.
It definitely does gets easier. This is my first MH and I got my ass handed to me by the time limit the first time I played the demo. Now though after going through it so many times it's become much easier, especially knowing what attack patterns the monster follows. I assume the full game will slowly ease you into those big battles as well.

Why does this game run like absolute dog shit on Wii U? It's an up scaled Wii game and it can't even keep 60fps.

I honestly do not get it. The Wii game ran better.

As a quasi-nub, I was surprised I killed Plesioth my second try (because I was testing out different weapons) and did it only seeing the 10-min warning.

The hardest challenge were the controls with the 3DS version, heh.

I really liked the Hammer.

Yeah, just died a few times before posting that went back with DS and killed him in a couple minute! Sooooo satisfying dodging just right knowing it's going to slide a few times and then attacking. Wll try the tougher boss soon.

Any word on how difficult co-op is? Do the bosses have more health? Are the different or harder?

Yeah the controls were definitely a hindrance to the game on the 3DS.

I used to get a real kick out of that when you'd see guys launching other hunters off the boat with their hammer or SA when hunting Jhen lol. I never did that but it happened to me plenty :(

I could maybe see getting into MH after playing the demo but all I have is the 3DS. I don't enjoy longer actiony games on the 3DS in the first place because of the ergonomics of the 3DS, but the controls also felt really awkward. It feels like I was wrestling the camera half the time. The ghetto lock on just seems tacked on, why can I only lock on to the quest monster? I haven't thought about it too much but why did they tie holding down the L button to initiating item selection rather than have it as a camera follow button.

There are other smaller things like sectioned off arenas leading to situations where I'm knocked into another zone or the weird item selection controls. Maybe I could get over these things but the lack of online play really reduces my interest for the game on the 3DS.

I'm a bit unclear about the structure of the game. At first I thought it was more like Final Fantasy XII's marks, where as long as it is triggered, I can just explore freely and fight any monster I might find on the way. What happens after the hunt fell? I thought I'd return to the base/wherever, but you mentioned carving.

This was not a very good demo. I'm still getting the game, but it would've been nice if the game actually told me the controls before I started...

The demo was definitely meant for MH fans to get a taste of what's new and what's changed :\
Would've been nice if Capcom had made a new demo for the west, considering that the western fanbase is still small.

Well it is a game where you gather materials, fight monsters (pretty much bosses, they get harder further along the game, but the game eases you into them), create armor, weapons, and other stuff in helping you complete your quest in completing all quests.

Quests are what you do, it may involve gathering materials, killing certain monsters, and do miscellaneous things (i.e. carry an egg to camp). Quests are initiated in the main hub, which is Moga Village in this game. You choose a quest, and complete it. You are limited in what quests you do based on your "level". So once you complete quests, you will be able to go to the next level, and so on.

So to answer your question of what happens after a monster is killed, when you kill a monster, you get to carve it and get materials for armor, weapons, and jewels (these are basically skill modifiers). You only get a minute to carve, so you have to go fast. Once that minute is over, you are done the quest. You are taken to a reward screen and get rewards, which are basically bonuses for the quest. If you damage certain parts, you will get more rewards.

There is a mode of where you are free to roam around and kill monsters there. Moga village is basically on Deserted Island, which you can roam freely. You can gather materials and kill monsters that may show up.

Even from the very limited demo I can see its addictive nature. I'm beating the rabbit thing faster and faster the more I play :P And since I'm a noob I'll stick with the dual blades. Shame because great sword is really cool.

So as complete newcomer convinced I would love the game I'm a bit disappointed.

I mean, after I killed the rabbit (used Longsword and Hammer) I was pretty excited and greatly enjoying it, but then after killing the water dragon thing I've lost most of the hype. Is this just a particularly frustrating fight in the game or am I doing something wrong or what?

When he's underwater the game consists of me trying to line up my depth with him using awful camera controls and then swinging away until he decides to fling me away with his tail which seems impossible to dodge since movement underwater is so slow. Am I wrong? Am I supposed to be able to avoid attacks underwater?

When he's on land it's fine, exactly what I expected. Waiting patiently for opportunities and then going in hard then running away ect. Underwater is just shit. It's not fun at all.

I hope I'm either missing something or that the underwater stuff isn't core to the main game.

I tried playing as the guy with the Heavy Bow gun and got my ass kicked.. Is it even possible to play through this game alone with this weapon?

Also there's no co-op in this demo, right?

Dat 3D.

The 3DS controls were fine for me, but I'm assuming they'll be even better with the CPP.
The only quirk was that the "lock on" button didn't seem to do anything.

There needs to be a notice in the first post to read the manual. I liked the 3D, not too overpowering but still got a feeling of depth.

Is it just me or are Dual Swords overpowered? I'm probably pretty rusty, but it took me 10-15 minutes to beat Lagombi with my trusty Greatsword. My first time trying out Dual Swords and it took noticeably less.

The 3DS version is surprisingly nice. I prefer the Wii U, but I think the controls are decent without the Circle Pad Pro. I wish there was a way to play it on the Wii U in 3D.

I'm a little surprised that anyone would have trouble with Plesioth. Getting used to underwater controls, sure, but it's often hard from him to hit you and he enjoys standing there like an idiot.

yes it's possible. easier if one adds the shield attachment, but that's for the release.

no co-op in the demo.

If you still want to try the Great Sword, here's some advice. Stick and move. The unsheath attack is slow, but it's pretty powerful. After you attack, dodge away and sheathe your weapon.

The slap follow-up can tire a monster out and cause it to stop moving. If a monster stops moving or falls over, then you can do a charge attack.

Obviously, it takes practice, but it's not a bad starting place.

i can't beat the plesioth i get close but the timer always goes out and right now its way behind the invisible wall at the beach if i attempt to go after it it will load the next area. what class is good for taking this thing down

I honestly do not get it. The Wii game ran better.

1. It's 1080p.

2. Its average framerate is higher than the Tri (which was locked at 30fps.)

My work day dragged on because I was looking forward to this demo so much. It's so good! It took some getting used to the 3DS controls, but the Wii U version was so much fun! Smooth animations and great sound. Can't wait for March 19th.

How prevalent are the underwater sections in the full game? I enjoyed the on-land aspects of combat, but I can't say I enjoyed the underwater parts on the 3DS (might be better on the WiiU, though).

no co-op in the demo.

That may be what I'll use when the game comes out. Anyone else have trouble reading the text in the menus on the 3DS version? It's also weird that the 3DS version even with the 3D cranked up seems to run better than the Wii U version.. Although they've probably fixed the frame rate of the Wii U version since the demo.

If that's true, why does 3U feel so choppy to me? Like Tri was a smooth 30FPS but 3U is a choppy 4xFPS because it should be 60 or something. Really bothers me in the demo.

Somewhat. From what I remember in Tri (although there should be far more monsters in 3U), 3 bosses by Lagiacrus.

Very small amount of the full game judging from Tri, so no worries there, I think they only meant to explore the mechanic, not really have it take over, MH Freedom Unite didn't even have underwater combat in it.

Having only played Tri, some of these new weapons are taking time for me to learn. I don't even want to touch the Hunting Horn yet, and I failed to kill Lagombi with the Gun Lance... Talk about embarrassing.

Also, I'm having difficulty deciding whether I like inverted X-axis camera controls or not. Anyone have any input?

dual swords was pretty easy weapon to start with, i had fun with em

Beat the first "easy" boss on the 3DS. I can see the potential, but ugh is it awkward to control. Also, where the heck are the enemy's life bars?!?

I see a ton of people playing MH for the first time if I read this thread. This is awesome, means the new WiiU footprint is introducing allot of new people to the game, I really hope people check out the full game, fighting monsters is just part of the fun, there are loads of crafting, smaller monster hunting etc in the full game, and the online is going to be sweet, they really should have gone all out and included online in the demo, just to show people how awesome it is.

And the netcode for Tri was absolutely stunning, game worked like a beast with three other people and my ping averaging 300ms.

You can think of the enemy's reactions as their life bar. If I remember correctly, they stagger at set points, so you can tell that you've made progress when that happens. They also become enraged (much faster and stronger) more frequently if their health is low.

Tri had 4 (if I'm remembering correctly) underwater-heavy fights. Most of the fights are on ground though. The underwater segments were dropped entirely for the PSP version and given how they feel on 3DS I'm not entirely sure they should have brought them back, but it is what it is. An inconvenience you just have to face once in a while.

Plesioth has always been a somewhat frustrating fight for me because his standing spin move has such ridiculous range that it's hard to do get a hit in. (That and his hipcheck move used to have a ginormous hitbox, but that seems fixed here.) His underwater behavior seems pretty frustrating too, since he does that tail flip constantly, and by the time you get lined up with him using the poor underwater controls, he's moving again.

As others have said, bear in mind this demo isn't really a great show of what the game is about. You're not just killing monsters. When you kill a monster, you get to carve parts from them and craft new weapons and armor with them, which is a hugely rewarding experience. There's nothing like completing a full set of gear from the hides and teeth of beasts you painstakingly slayed yourself, making you more powerful so you can take on even bigger and harder challenges.

The only quirk was that the "lock on" button didn't seem to do anything.

There is no lock-on. It's "Monster Look" or "Monster Focus" or "Monster Center" or whatever you want to call it. At any time you can tap the L button to center the camera behind you. Once you've engaged the quest monster, you can tap the icon on the touch screen to turn on "Monster Look." With this on, when you tap L while in the same map area as the monster, your camera will instead center on the monster instead of behind you. This is a workaround for the lack of a right analog stick. A true lock-on in a Monster Hunter game would be contrary to the core experience of the game, which is about timing your hits and getting your aim perfect. Skill plays a huge role in MH and that's why expert players can jump into a mission practically naked and kick a monster to death, while new players have trouble with even the smaller raptor-type quest monsters.

Let's face it... it's terrible.

I bought the WiiU exclusively for this game, dude it's bigger than Pokemon in Japan, this game is brilliant, just wait for the full release and try it out, or you can grab Tri, or Freedom Unite (PSP)

It might also be that you don't like the Dark Souls-like full animation fighting style, and fighting the controls is literally a mechanic!

The demo is an unplayable mess, and fugly to boot.

This is NOT how you introduce a franchise to a prospective new audience.

No one plays MH for "amazing" graphics. And plenty people are managing to learn the controls and hunt monsters. If you are interested a game rich with compelling combat, you might want to give the game a real chance. If you aren't, then you aren't obligated to check it out.

It is my first MH. I really don't like fighting the controls at all.

Because they are...? Are you comparing them to other games?

You have to be methodical in your hunts. Learning how each weapon works, animation, evasion times and learning the moveset of each monster, etc... There is no health bar by design. You have to develop a feel for hunting each monster with each weapon. It's part of the joy of victory having put such effort into it.

You're supposed to look at the visual cues.

Kinda wished there were more visual cues, though. Like blood, or the monster getting limp on the legs if I keep hitting the legs.
