Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I only finished the first mission, and after 4 tries. I got used to the controls, and the boss lock-on tip really helped. I'm sold on it, though I'm really looking forward to the U version when I do eventually get one.

My only wish was that there were online for the 3DS, and that I had a CPP. Do they have a CPP for the XL yet?

Importing the CPP XL is your only option right now in NA.

In Europe the CPP has an official release on the same day MonHun comes out.

If anything I'll get the 3DS version. It felt off playing it on the Wii U. Graphics aren't everything... The controls and animations are as sluggish as I remember. Every action in general is just super slow. I've played MH in the past, but now I remember why I never became hooked. The actual gameplay is fun, but the controls and animations need to come out of the stone age.

There are only two attackers per weapon, right? I'm not missing anything to the combat beyond attack1/2/roll/ability?

After playing this for a couple of hours. I'll not be getting this on my game starved WiiU. I just didn't like it and the poor graphics did not help.

I played both versions, and I liked what I saw. Even if I had no idea what I was doing. But by the time I played the Wii U version, finally got the hang of it. Though that "easy" monster was anything but.. Took me like 15 minutes. lol

Even "easy" monsters can be pretty daunting for the first time. You need to study their movements and know when your openings are.

They actually took a good provision in this demo to give (most? haven't used someone weapons yet) G-Rank armor.for low-rank monsters. When you play the actual game, even Lagombi will hurt a lot more than it does now so you'll really have to study it then.

Some weapons require you to hit Attack 1/2 at the same time for special moves. ie., For Dual Swords, once you're in demon mode (after you hit the R button), you have to press both attack buttons to use the demon frenzy attack thing which is where the true damage of output of the Dual Swords is. Another is the bow, you have to hit both attack button to apply the coatings; without the power coatings, you are doing very little damage. There's a lot of stuff like this that doesn't make itself obvious at first.

7 of the large areas and 4 Arena-like areas (including the Great Desert), according to the wiki.

Of those areas only Deserted Island, Tundra, Sandy Plains, Flooded Forest, Mountain Peaks, and Volcano are expansive, multi-zone areas.

The others are zones where you will deal with the larger, special monsters. They aren't expansive, it's just 1-2 zones.

There's also the Colosseum, which has a normal arena and an underwater one.

I downloaded both demos last night. For some reason I did much better playing on the 3ds?

Either way it is super disappointing that there is no MP for 3DS. I know there is talk about being able to connect through the Wii U but it will be hard enough convincing friends to pick this up let alone asking that they buy a Wii U...

I'll probably still pick this up and play with randoms but it just won't be the same without people I know.

Okay, so I played both the 3DS and WiiU version.

WiiU version - Uhh... wow. This looks surprisingly good, especially considering its roots. I've been dying to play some 1080p content on my projector and this game looked pretty great on it. Very happy in that regard. About the game? I liked it, though like many others, I did feel a bit lost at times!

Played the easy quest and started attacking that rabbit. I felt I did okay at times and it looked(?) to be getting sluggish towards the end I think. Not sure if I'm imagining things or if the monsters do reflect signs of defeat. Well, anyway, I ran out of time, which goes to show how poorly I did!

3DS version - I didn't like the controls too much and felt the game was too cramped to play on a small 3DS screen. I guess my 110" projector screen spoilt me! I was impressed with the 3D effect though the muddy textures weren't overly impressive. I definitely prefer the WiiU version out of the two.

Overall, I think I might be buying it. I love that fact that it requires skill which you acquire as you go along. It bucks the common trend of making a game artificially difficult by just throwing more enemies at you instead of having to take a single one down strategically.

It really does feel like a game where you go to hunt an enemy, die, adjust your strategy, die again and continue dying until something clicks and you suddenly know the best approach to take an enemy down. Or, at least I hope it's like that because that's what I'm finding engaging.

edit - I can understand where the mixed impressions are coming from. It's the type of game that's not everyone's cup of tea, like many Japanese titles. I'll also add that one main negative I did find were the size of the areas? Why are they so small? It would've been better to create a seamless world I reckon, but what do I know, I've just been playing it for an hour!

That's pretty much exactly what these games are. All 500+ hours of it.

Whether it's deciding what armor combination gives you the best skills, what weapon best applies to a monsters' movements/positions, and devising new ways to exploit weaknesses, that's pretty much what the game boils down to.

Never played Monster Hunter before and I just tried the Wii U demo. The lack of a tutorial really hurts the demo, but the incredibly tiny text and icons were enough to convince me not to buy this game. I'll try the 3DS demo later and hope I'll actually be able to read things.

The lack of a tutorial really hurts the demo

There's no tutorial that will tell you how to fight the beasts without dying. The only thing a MH tutorial usually does is tell you how to fish, cook, and how to use the basics of the weapon. Tutorials in MH basically boil down to regurgitating the manual to you in-game. And because there's no need to fish and stuff in the demo, there's no tutorial. As far as the weapon itself goes, you can mess around with it in camp, or on the neutral beasts (the little mammoth guys in the snowy area). After that, it's up to you. You have to study the monster. You have to see the openings. It can't tell you how to do that.

Not sure how you're expecting it to be any bigger on a 3DS screen. I'd recommend giving it a chance at least, but if that's a dealbreaker that's a dealbreaker, I guess.

That's one of the real annoyances with this series. I can't think of one that had legible text/interface. They always choose horrible fonts and make them tiny as possible. I thought tri might have decent fonts after playing the psp versions prior, but it was a horrible blurry mess and the fonts were even smaller (relatively) than the portable releases.

Fix your damn fonts capcom!

edit: I found it odd that the font is even harder to read when you switch 3d off in the demo. You'd think it would be the opposite.

I tried Monster Hunter on the PSP before, but never succeeded in anything. Now in the WiiU demo I finally managed to kill something (the rabbit thing on the easy quest), felt good. I enjoyed this quite a bit more than I did on the PSP (especially since load times aren't nearly as bad), maybe I'll get this on WiiU.

You can exchange your progress between the 3DS and WiiU version, right? Any chance this will work between an EU WiiU and a US 3DS version?

My life is finally complete.

... or ruined.

The small text and icons (I hate I can't see which way the monster is facing...) is lame but at least they're not blurry, and a lot of the UI can be mapped to the GamePad anyways. I really just need to get bigger TV I think.

Well this took forever, used the MHWiki for most descriptions, and for the images. Was too lazy to do the coating and ammo that comes with the bows and bowguns. Hopefully this helps.

Fishing Harpoon A must if you want to gather materials from fish. Weaken the fish, then harpoon away. Can also be used to attack monsters, though not that stong.

The only negative about the demo I have (aside from my aspect ratio and tiny text) is that it doesnt really show the heart of the game. Mining, gathering items and collecting materials from defeated monsters. I hope people give it a chance and give the demo a few tries. It does take a bit to get the hang of it. I remember playing the Tri japanese demo and actually feeling let down after the hype I had with the serious. I decided to get the game anyways and I'm glad I did. It's so fun to go on hunts with friends and have a few holy shit moments.

How do I go from running straight into the hammer charging position? I can't seem to remember the input from my Wii days.

Heh, I asked the same thing a couple pages ago. Was so frustrating not being able to figure this out last night and having to waste time doing a fake swing to get it out so I could start charging.

X + A + R Seems like a wonky combo to press at the same time.

Really annoys me there isn't a splash screen or something explaining the controls and the basics of the game. Working out that kind of stuff on the fly isn't fun, especially on a game designed to be difficult. I'll give the demo a few more tries, but MH doesn't seem like my sort of thing so far.

I'm really impressed with the 3DS version. It has a much better framerate, no? The controls aren't that awful for me, I just shift the camera with the L button if its too much of hassle to use the touch screen's pad.. something ill definitely get used too anyway. I have an old circle pad pro but I only have the XL now...I'm considering doing some rigging to make it fit.

There should have been something like that, but the manual details mostly everything you need to know.

I can see playing this demo all 30 times... Its pretty much what I expected.
I kinda wish I had a WiiU, this game looks beautiful on the 3DS.

I feel the same way. Usually I don't care for tutorials but this game could use one in the Demo.

So, oddly enough, I was able to down Lagombi on the 3DS but not the Wii-U. Then again, I had "warmed up" on the Wii-U, i suppose, before tackling it on the 3DS.

Ultimately though, I think this game is really at its best when you and your pals are getting the shit beat out of them, so i think I am a lock for the Wii-U version. Is it 4 players max?

EDIT: I also used the dual blades on the 3DS and used the S+S on the Wii-U. Maybe it's me, but I found the dual blades to be much easier to handle.

I've only ever used Tri weapons. The Gunlance seems kind of pointless unless I'm missing something. It can't even counter.

Dual Blades seems to have a bit less mobility than SnS, but SnS has less damage I imagine, so that's cool. I tried the "demon" mode and didn't seem to do anything more than I normally do.

I haven't tried the Hunting Horn yet.

Great Sword was still just as BA as ever - love that thing.

Switch Axe is probably still an awkward...thing.

I don't get the bow.

Doing Long Sword next.

No

Capcom thinks their franchise is so perfect, it doesn't need a tutorial. People should just get it and adore it

*sigh*

And then they wonder why the West doesn't give a shit about it the series. It's a shitty demo, designed for those who already made up their made/played the games before (like me).

Way to go Capcom

It's crazy that ZL and ZR aren't even mapped on the gamepad. Could be used to switch between items, or signaling, or mapped to specific item types... anything. Not accounting for extra buttons even if you have extra functionality just screams of a lazy port.

But if I start a rant about all the design failings now I won't be done when the game comes out, so I'll stop myself here. Fucking Capcom.

You got something to say, say it. Don't defend the shit sir
