Live Killzone: Shadow Fall demo with Jimmy Fallon tomorrow

Watching the HD video I realized there are going to be some sort of 'powers' mapped to the d-pad. I don't know if these belong to the weapons or the character, but that could be cool. The one in the demo was being used to slow time. I'd like blinking to make it in somehow, there's a legit FPS innovation for you.

I like where this is going.

Powers like cloak, force field, and slow mo would be awesome. It would be similar to the the Crysis nano suit but tailored to the KZ universe.

They need to use all this damn horse power for new innovations in gameplay.

Let me pause time and select a certain are of the map to "distort". Like say there are beams overhead, well I can use this power to break them and send them falling onto the enemy. Same thing could be done to collapse bridges, towers, etc.

I dunno, if the game feels good to play then I would argue that it's not bland. I still enjoy 16-bit style platformers just as I do first person shooters. Even if it offers nothing new, I can enjoy it if it has been executed well.

This is true of course. I still haven't experienced a shooter with gunplay and enemy interaction as satisfying as in RE4. The fact that it hasn't been 1upped just tells me, most important factors about shooting games being fun is about game design. How the enemies approach you, how you need to react to them, how varied the enemies are, risk/reward in combat etc...

Have you played KZ2. KZ2 has very satisfying gunplay and enemy interaction.

I agree, but these sorts of things always take time to pop up in a given generation. We'll see better animations, new gameplay mechanics, etc... as time goes on. If you compare, say, the 360 reveals at the beginning of this generation, you'll see how things started out the gate just looking like prettier Xbox games. What we're seeing now is just the direct, automatic effect of better tech. The real interesting stuff will come.

The gameplay stuff that looks like it could be added onto KZ: SF is being overlooked and could be great, but so far it's stuff they could have put into KZ3. There may be a mechanic or two that's only possible from the new hardware that we haven't seen. This is how it'll be for the first year or so probably. New innovations tied to tech will accumulate over time.

Well, from Guerrilla's official PR:

In the midst of this all stands a Shadow Marshal, you. The most special of the special forces, tasked with maintaining the delicate balance.

Sounds like someone who could have some sort of special powers/abilities.

I'd actually put KZ2 and 3 up there with RE4 in that regard. The way they react to your gunfire is really impressive and very satisfying.

Yeah it's the one thing they got right in that game. But in RE4 it also served a gameplay function which was awesome.

Glad we finally got a good look at the reaction animations. I'd love to see them dial these up to 11. Combine those with Last of Us' eerily real blood tech and the game could be really gritty and brutal, which suits KZ well.

Combine that with improved destruction, a bit more open environments (multiple places climb to flank from different directions, etc), and the customization/stealth from KZ Mercenary and this could really build on the franchise formula.

I'd also love for the momentum/recoil of KZ2 to come back, although I'm not holding my breath for that. I wouldn't mind if it was less weighy but those two things really made KZ2 feel different.

Oh I agree 100%.

I think they handled it just as well in RE5 even if the content wasn't as interesting.

I remember a time when radical gameplay evolution was expected with any new platform.

Somewhere along the way we went astray...

We made the jump from 2D to 3D, primarily.

That forced an industry wide shift but there are no more smoking gun technological leaps like that to make. Now the PS2/GC/Xbox era was when developers really got to cut their teeth on fully realized 3D worlds. Nothing on PS3/360 was a radically game changer, and expecting something on the PS4/720 to be one at launch is setting an artificially high standard.

Given some time though I think we'll see that happen. The big step I'm expecting is more deform-able environments, which will radically alter gameplay in nearly every genre, but will take time for developers to really wrap their engines around that level of physical modeling.

Yeah and co-op melee moves were just stupidly good. Man RE5 feels so much better now that we have RE6...

I actually LIKE RE6, but yeah, it doesn't feel anywhere near as tight as RE4 and 5.

I don't think we went astray.

It's not as if gameplay saw a significant change when we moved from 8-bit systems to 16-bit platforms, right?

The next shift brought about 3D but it was so rudimentary to the point where there were a lot of things that simply weren't possible. We're reaching the point where technology is good enough to allow for just about anything a developer could dream of.

LMAO...I thought Fallon was a little better then this since he shows this stuff on his show a lot...maybe he was just goofing around with his guest though...anyway,animations look pretty sweet and that slow motion moment was pretty good...

Yeah of course Killzone gets special (good and bad) attention because it's the first real NEXT-GEN powerhouse game to be unveiled.

And definitely agree on dynamic destruction. I loved the first Bad Company just because nobody was safe from tanks... aiming inside a window and blowing a whole bunker up was extremely satisfying. Of course it helped that the game had incredible audio work...

I remember Super Mario World feeling "Next-gen" compared to Mario 3. Looking back, it just expanded Mario 3 ideas, but it did it with such force that nobody could argue against that game...

I also agree that nowadays such innovation and revolution is harder to pull off.

It's just your child mind recalling the past.

Super Mario World is one of my favorite games of all time, but it's not a revolution. It really is just a simple evolution of the Mario 3 formula.

Seriously, the SNES simply allowed ideas from the NES era to be refined.

jimmy fallon is such a fraud. "hrrr i play bideo gahmes" doesnt know to control a shooter.

My favorite moments of his have been the Uncharted 3 and KZ3 demos.

"I was just playing Uncharted 2 this weekend to prepare. How do you jump?"

In KZ3 he managed to die with God Mode on. He was so impressed by the ocean waves he walked off the edge and into it while trying to get a better look. Hulst's face was hilarious after that.

lol.

I sorta expected anthony anderson to be better than his showing he was stuck with the camera facing the ceiling.

you could tell the guerilla guys wanted to show off the flying scene as the big end climax but they ran outta time LOL.

wtf? I need to see the KZ3 one now.

I mean, games like Uncharted and Max Payne 3 have come and gone since RE4 with the ability to move & shoot simultaneously. Max Payne raised the bar in games for weapon handling/enemy encounters/shot placement/etc, so I'd try that if you're looking gunplay better than RE4's tank controls.

Not as boring as in the clip? What exactly are you guys defending here? That shown clip is nothing but a sneak peak at those visuals that are coming which is why I said that the seen gameplay is boring - I mean we won't even see most of the stuff in the final game probably, so what's the big fuss about? Those visuals looked good, but that's it; I play tons of FPS games and that looked boring even when compared to BLOPS2

Seem to hit a nerve here :lol
I'm not defending, i'm only asking what you would like to see instead since you criticize the gameplay. But if you simply think it looks boring, then that is fair enough because that is as subjective as it gets, i cant argue about that :) But if someone says that Killzone hasnt changed over the games in the serie, then that is not true.

I wonder who told Sony we wanted another Killzone? The name itself has to go.

Agreed. I actually enjoy the gameplay in the Killzone series, but the branding is silly and the whole project needed a better story, writing and characters.

This actually seems like a step in the right direction. The concept of a East Berlin/West Berlin is actually pretty interesting, particularly if they're going to deal with it's moral complexities.

However, this is GG - so that is a big fucking if.

I think this Killzone will surprise story wise. I reckon they've been listening.

I hope so. Because while I enjoyed the Campaign in 2 & 3 I didn't give a fuck what was going on. I'm happy they went with all new characters. Fuck Sev , Rico, and the ISA.

Totally.

In my mind, Call of Duty really should be the only game that exists.

That and Angry Birds.

...

...

Are you a gamer or do you prefer sales? Serious question.

You fail to understand what Im getting at.

Sony would of had a better showing if they showcased a new IP then other ho-hum sequel.

Yes! Yes! Now i can see it! Its so much beautiful than a ps3 game! Everything is diferent! Im a believer now!

Im sorry, im really sorry. It still looks like any ps3/360 game

And so you are claiming that Nintendo's games haven't evolved in the past 18 years? No, I think too much of you as a poster to really believe that you were serious with that post
To be fair, the arguement can apply to every genre, also the games from Nintendo. It is possible to say that the gameplay in Mario Kart for example is bland. The sequels have new stuff changed and added to them (which can be defined as being evolved), but that goes for pretty much every sequel as well. It comes down to being subjective if someone enjoys it or not.

I don't think so. There were enough new IP's shown.

Knack- New IP.
DriveClub- New IP.
Deep Down- New IP.
Destiny- New IP.
The Witness- New IP.
Media Molecule- New IP.

So they show off Killzone 4 and Infamous 3 and everyone shits their pants? Believe it or not, many people love these franchises. The Killzone 4 thread has over 1800 posts.

So yeah, I'm glad they showed it. Got the fanbase excited about the PS4.

Killzone was one of the few franchises I said might lure me in to a day one purchase (dependant on price). I'm absolutely glad they showed it. Gunplay is second to none in KZ.

I suspect that they may have inverted the Y axis and that was messing Jimmy and Anthony up. It would me if I was expecting the opposite Y axis movement when someone handed me a controller.

Though I do agree with you that I question how much of a "gamer" Jimmy Fallon really is. Maybe he enjoys games but doesn't really have much time to play them. There have been other demos in the past on his show where he didn't look like he had played many video games.

You forgot Watch Dogs :)

I can imagine the GG studio was pulling their hair and sweating bullets when they gave the controls over to Jimmy and company... These demo's are very linear, and bugs are covered up and worked around for a very limited way of playing.

Why would we restrict ourselves this way? Old ideas are often best if you just take them to new genres/scenarios and combine them with something new. Killzone 2 tried to bring "weight" to the genre. I don't know why they changed this, but physics based animations could immensly add to this idea. Maybe the enemy armor could be dynamically destructible too. I remember when MGS4 was revealed and the gekkos were searching for Snake. I was blown away by this. In the end product they were nothing like it though and the game was a lot smaller in scale than I thought. I would love bigger arenas with some sort of mechs patrolling and rummaging through walls and shit :b
Killzone 4 has bullet time/slow down and climbing from what we've seen so far. New stuff has been added that wasnt in the older Killzone games, but the ideas are not new (like F.E.A.R also has bullet time for example). They also have a thing that radio commands in the game will be transmitted through the PS4 controller (it has a speaker).

We have only seen a fraction of what Killzone 4 offers. I understand that we can only go by what we have seen, and everything else will just be speculation. But there is much more to be revieled regarding Killzone 4, so we'll see what happends :)
