Will Shadow Fall be your first proper Killzone?

If so I can relate, I previously couldn't shake this feeling of a delayed input but I think that was back since either Killzone 1 or 2. I really hope it's a lot snappier to look around and aim, was KZ3?

Watching that 1080p youtube video in slow motion it looked so stable even with the motion blur and obviously the other leaps they've made in terms of lighting and scene detail that it will be a definite buy for me. Although I will probably play Mercenaries first on Vita.

- If you didn't like the gameplay in the conference please post why if you can. Initially when I watched it I couldn't really tell what was going on yet he was responding and shooting quite fast and it seemed a bit boring and automatic although very pretty, I can understand it was difficult to show well and live reliably but still.. the second gameplay video was a slightly different play through which was a little slower in the beginning with all the shooting gameplay and was in 1080p was much better though! I watched that repeatedly, you can see so much going on and nearly all of it was very impressive.

-- Just to be clear I mean 'proper' as in not the psp game which wasn't an fps, and one that you've played a reasonable amount of time in, not just shortly at a friends house or the demo - although feel free to interpret it however.

I've been a member of the Killzone Defence Force since 2004

Honestly this demo looked a LOT less appealing to me than KZ2 did. Entirely artistic reasons.

nope. well if you don't count the psp one....

But I feel like i'll probably get the vita one before this if I'm drunk enough and have psn up.

I want more of the original KZ atmosphere...

The aesthetic shift sure makes it a lot more likely to be. But I'll have to see a lot more before I make up my mind.

Played a demo of Killzone 3 which was my only real experience with the series. Good graphics, incredibly generic everything else.

The Shadow Fall demo looked to be an upgrade on both those aspects, the latter of which is not in a good way, so no.

I have played KZ2 and 3. I most likely will get KZSF but hope the MP is like KZ2, the control response remains same if not slightly better than KZ3 while bringing back the accuracy characteristics of KZ2.

Trailer looked boring. So generic. The sooner Sony kill the franchise and GG and start afresh on a new shooter franchise the better. Right now they are throwing good money after bad.

No. Played Killzone 2 a little after release. The story was bad and I really wanted to punch

(spoilered just in case anyone cares)

Played Killzone 3 and it killed my interest in the franchise entirely.

I've never really been sure what the focus is supposed to be with Killzone. There seems to be a lot of showing off of the Helghast which made me think perhaps Guerilla were implying that single player story was good, but that really wasn't the case.

Multiplayer seems quite good, but there's better on other platforms and games.

Anyone care to explain what the big draw to this franchise is, outside of the enemies looking kind of cool?

Killzone 2 was my last proper Killzone. Killzone 3 was rushed and stumbled back a bit.

Have played every Killzone to date though and loved them all.

KZ2 is still one of the best FPS games of all time.

It may be the first Killzone I pass on. With the previous games, I've always been drawn in by the look of the games and find the Helghast an appealing enemy, but always find Guerilla's brand of level design, encounter design and pacing to be very lacking.

I've played part of 2 and 3 and thought they were both extremely poor, so I probably won't mess with 4 even if it is very pretty.

Infamous was the most interesting looking Sony game of that conf to me.

I watched the trailer quite a few times...the number of players in the battle, the way your team moved forward and attacked/took cover, the extremely fast knife throw after using it to melee, the reflections and explosions and sheer size of what was going on while running smoothly. The lighting and textures of other players as well as the sheer amount of stuff that was littering the screen after the explosion hit and during the flying sequence. It's too much. I've been looking for a slower paced shooter since backing away from CoD and this looks really appealing.

Does anyone feel the same way about the input slowness on 1/2/3? Did 2/3 have any (if you noticed it on 1..). I think I've asked this before and people say it did improve in 2 onwards but not sure how much. I can handle the 30fps, it looked pretty consistent I need it to be fast and responsive..

Thanks for all your posts as well, any opinions appreciated especially if you've played them before or were put off by them for some reason (and why). Don't have any killzones to pop into the PS3 and get a feel..might try the demos again if they are still up.

I've owned every Killzone game. I'll definitely be picking up Shadow Falls (along with Merc on Vita).

I'm happy about the newer art direction, hopefully the rest of the game looks as good.

Not sure what "proper Killzone" means, but I have played Killzone 3. In any case, Killzone: Shadow Fall looks pretty average at best. Just judging by the demo, the game looks like a repetitive and generic soulless shooter. I can't see myself paying much for it.

Played and beat Killzone on PS1
Played and beat Killzone 2 on PS3
Skipped Killzone 3

Not my first go round with the Killzone series, but I personally don't think the series is all that great. I keep holding on hoping it'll get better, but I should just accept it for what it is. I pretty mediocre shooter.

With that being said, I obviously haven't learned myself because the hype is starting to get to me

day 1

If it's great. I skipped out on KZ2/3. KZ2 looked pretty good, but that demo's gameplay looked horrible. Hopefully it's just early.

Terrific launch game seemingly, already looks release ready. Can't wait personally. Have played all entries in the series so far but yet to complete KZ3.

If I do get shadow fall, it wouldn't be my first. I got 2 and 3. Played and beat both. Never played the original killzone on PS1 I think.

TBH I'm not even that huge a fan of the series but just playing it and seeing those visuals is worthwhile. I remember a moment in killzone 2 and some moments in 3 where I'd stop just absorb what I was seeing, lol.

The story is fairly interesting if you actually get into the back story, which they sadly never delve deep into in the games. Also a lot of it is simply the feel of the game. The way the Helghasts react to each individual bullet makes the shooting feel satisfying. The dark and oppressive atmosphere is something no other shooter really pulls off (and I'm sure it will return despite half or so of the game taking place in this colorful and shiny city). The AI aren't scripted but rather react dynamically to what you are doing and what's happening around them. I mean personally, there's a lot of stuff that draws me to this game besides the visuals.

And it will look the same since its a FPS.

You cant change that.

Because Halo looks like every other FPS, or R:FoM did as well? Those games had character, something which Killzone sorely lacks. I'll give the Vita version a spin because I'll take any game I can get on it, plus it is developed ground up by SCE Cambridge so it might be worth playing.

I'm not a huge fan of the series but I've been playing the games since 2. KZ2 was decent. Really bland campaign that I hardly remember anything of except for the Radec fight and every level pretty much looking the same. I hated the controls but I enjoyed the Multiplayer quite a bit. I enjoyed KZ3's campaign more. I thought the controls were a noticeable improvement and the campaign felt much more varied when it came to environments. The ending was one of the worst things I've ever seen though. The MP was okay for about a month or so but got old really fast.

So depending on whether or not I get a PS4 I'll most likely get Shadow Fall because it looks pretty impressive despite seeming more of the same as far as gameplay mechanics go. I'm curious to see what they'll do with the Multiplayer for the game.

I agree completely, but I'm still sure that somewhere along the way in the campaign it will "look like a Killzone game".

I don't know much about the storyline of the series, really I don't know anything even though I've played 1, 2 and the PSP one, but did this demo take place on Helghan?

It will be my forth entry in the Killzone franchise fellow GAFfer.

I've played them all but I might not be able to play the Vita one.

Did I say that?

We know zero about this game or its mechanics, and KZ does has plenty of character to me.

It's just that the story leaves so much to be desired. Neither of the previous two did justice to the KZ universe nor the epic speeches by Visari that pointed to the impetus for the war.

The depressing helghan setting is probably one of the reasons Killzone never reached mainstream.

Did I say that no?

We know zero about this game or its mechanics.

I said it's time to shitcan Killzone and GG, you say a new franchise would look the same because it's an FPS. I then point out two FPS examples that stand out and do things differently, one of which is a Sony owned franchise.

We know everything there is to know about the mechanics, it will play identically to Killzone 3, which was shit. More than anything else the characters will all be as hateful as ever and the interesting apartheid state idea will never get off the ground because GG have absolutely zero story telling skills.

Yep! Only other Killzone I played was the demo for 3.

I don't even like Killzone that much, but saying that it lacks character is kinda wrong from all angles.

Why would you want to shitcan GG (you mean fire them or re-absorb GG personnels into other first party dev houses)? They have another project (new IP) in the works.

No, it won't and I'm getting a bit of a sense of deja vu to be honest.

I generally buy new a console when there is a game I really want on the way (even if it's not yet available). With PS3, it was Killzone 2 that convinced me I needed a PS3 to join my 360. I was really psyched about it, extremely impressed with the art style, graphics, animation, etc. and couldn't wait to play it.

I finally got my hands on it and... ehhh, it was okay.

So yeah, I'm going to buy Shadow Fall and it might even be the first PS4 game I get, but I'm not getting my hopes up as much this time. I expect it to be competent and look really pretty, and for a launch game, that's acceptable. If it turns out to be more than that, all the better.

I got into KZ late and bought KZ2 right before KZ3 came out and loved it. Ill never look back, the world, the lore, atmosphere is all great. Im all in for KZ mercenaries and Shadow Fall.

Nope. Was kind of interested in KZ before but recently got bored of shooters. Seeing that it's still a shooter I don't imagine I'll be checking out Shadowfall.

I'm far more likely to play this one because the setting looks so much nicer.... But then it transitions into the same old cliched dark warzone by the end, so I'm not sure...

Nah, I bought Killzone 1, 2, and Liberation, each out of curiosity. I wanted to see how they pushed the hardware. I'll probably pick up Shadow Fall when there's a deal on it for the same reason. They're decent linear cinematic shooters, but that's not enough to get me really jazzed about a game.

Liberation is still my favorite, I think, although I loved 2's multiplayer once they sorted the aiming out.

^ I have been hearing good things about the psp version, will give it a shot. I know what you mean about waiting for a price drop, but if there isn't another shooter for a while (say Planetside 2 never comes) and BF4/CoD aren't available I'll need an fps! The actual gunplay battles in this are what excite me the most to be honest - I loved how there were so many ai on both sides and they were able to take cover and move really smartly. So even for replaying the SP I am pumped for it but hearing about some of the previous games not having great pacing/endings is a bit worrying but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt especially as it's a launch title.

Thanks guys - I know it's not the easiest thing to remember but did you feel any change in the way the games responded or remember feeling a significant improvement in 3/2 from the original one(s)?
Is that what you mean't by controls moonspeak or was that more to do with the layout?

No.

I played the first Killzone which was promising but the second Killzone was so bad I gave up on the franchise and will never return to it.
