Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Were those pics from Tinypic? That host is gets filtered on GAF, so they won't show up. Try something like imgur.com or abload.de

Yes, i used Tinypic.

Quick question about DS Fix. My monitor is 1080. I put 2560x1440 as my rendering resolution. It looks alot better to me then 1080. What is doing the downsampling?

I'm not sure if that question makes sense, but I'll try.

You're rendering the game at 1440p, but before the GPU sends it to your monitor, it resizes it to 1080p. By resizing it, you get better texture clarity as well as less aliasing.

Anyone know what a GTX680 with a solid CPU can run Dark Souls at without dropping below 60fps except for bonfires of course? Or even on a GTX670.

BTW Xenorik, Xenogears is the best RPG ever.

Yeah sorry I did and got it to work I think, but if my FPS is still going down to 15 when the first boss hits my character, should I just accept it or is there something I can do about that?

I had the same problem, With the game knocking itself down to 15 fps seemingly at random. What I did to fix it was to unlock the framerate in the dsfix config (This turns off vsync used by the game) and I then set a cap of 30fps. My machine can't seem to keep a constant 60fps and a constant 30 suited me better. I then used d3doverrider to force vsync, As the screen tearing annoys me. You could try this and see how it works for you. It sorted out my 15fps problems.

Follow Almyn's suggestion. Also, the settings you put into DSfix.ini will matter the most pertaining to the fps you receive. If you are able to play Dark Souls without Durante's fix and have 30fps, then the settings in the DSfix.ini are above Dark Souls stock settings and your PC is not capable of performing at 30fps with those enhanced settings. Lowering the settings in DSfix.ini will bring you back to 30fps given you were getting 30fps without Durante's fix. Providing us with your system specs can allow us to inform you of which pieces of hardware are bottlenecking your performance the most if you are willing to buy new hardware and install it in your PC to boost the game settings using Durante's fix.

For example I am buying the GeForce Titan card at the end of May so I can finally play through the PC version of this game at 1600p with downsampling at 60fps. No need to upgrade my i7-860 OC'd to 3.8 Ghz for this game at those settings.

Has there been any DLC content for the PC version since it launched? Think I am getting it confused since consoles got DLC that I think brought it up to speed with the PC version.

What's your setup?

I'm running it off a Dell XPS L502X, graphics card is GT 540 M, i7, 8 gb of ram, i7.

Also, hypothetically, what number would I use for downsampling if I had 1920x1080?

But doesn't it actually improve performance for some?

Since your graphics card is a GT540M which is slow I wouldnt do any downsampling with the display resolution at 1080p. Your best bet is to try to bump up other enhancements that Durante added such as SSAO. But I am not sure what you will be able to get away with at 30fps with a slow video card such as the GT540M. Also considering you are using a laptop there is nothing you can do as far as upgrades that will increase performance in Dark Souls other than buying a whole new computer.

How does the 360 version run in comparison? Can I expect it to not hit under 25 at the least?

I would think your PC should be able to handle Dark Souls without Durante's fix at a solid 30fps throughout the game which is a better option than playing the console version. If that isnt the case then I guess the console version is your best option without spending lots of money.

I have nothing of note to say, just thank Durante yet again because I feel like it. I really have to select some of the screenshots I've taken and put them online...

Yeah it's gotten better, it just dropped below 20 every time the asylum demon connected with something because of the smoke. I even have the other AAs on, and 1080p, but without downsampling, and it only drops below like 28 for boss fights or fights with a ton of fire/smoke.

You are going to have major fps issues in Blightown if that is causing an fps drop. Also, I dont know what other AAs you could have on, any AA that is provided in the game settings is worthless and should be off. I think there may be a way to force AA through nvidiainspector, but I would just leave AA alone and be happy with 1080p. Maybe try turning on some SSAO or some of the other features that Durante implemented since I dont think those are all that demanding. Just keep in mind if the only change you make is the display resolution to 1920x1080, then you are playing the game much improved over the console version which if I remember correctly is a lousy 1280x720.

Yeah I meant all of the Durante non-downsampling stuff. SSAO, VSSAO whatever the acronyms are lol.

And I've heard about the infamous Blighttown fps drops, I'll hopefully be able to trudge through it to get to the rest of the game.

Just saw this thread pop up on the first page and wanted to take the opportunity to thank Durante for the amazing work he did with this mod. Also let's not forget how quickly he released the first version of the mod after the game's release!

I'd like to thank him as well. My friends never would have played this game if you hadn't made the PC version attractive. Now I can actually have conversations about the game.

So I recently bought this and when I try Durante's fix I get this and i am too dumb to work out what I am doing wrong

Uh, pc specs i7-3770, 8gb ram, HD5770, monitor at 60hz doing 1440x900

Durante fix specs

Code:
# Graphics Options
###############################################################################

# internal rendering resolution of the game
# higher values will decrease performance
renderWidth 1440
renderHeight 900

# The display width/height
# 0 means use the same resolution as renderWidth/Height
# (use for downscaling - if in doubt, leave at 0)
presentWidth 0
presentHeight 0

############# Depth of field

# Depth of Field resolution override, possible values:
# 0 = no change from default (DoF pyramid starts at 512x360)
# 540 = DoF pyramid starts at 960x540
# 810 = DoF pyramid starts at 1440x810
# 1080 = DoF pyramid starts at 1920x1080
# 2160 = DoF pyramid starts at 3840x2160
# higher values will decrease performance
# do NOT set this to the same value as your vertical rendering resolution!
dofOverrideResolution 540

############# Framerate

# Enable variable framerate (up to 60)
# NOTE:
# - this requires in-memory modification of game code, and may get you banned from GFWL
# - there may be unintended side-effects in terms of gameplay
# - you need a very powerful system (especially CPU) in order to maintain 60 FPS
# - in some instances, collision detection may fail. Avoid sliding down ladders
# Use this at your own risk!
# 0 = no changes to game code
# 1 = unlock the frame rate
unlockFPS 1

(I've only copied in the things I've changed/messed with because otherwise this post is massive)

Anyone got any ideas?

Did you disable AA in-game? That tends to screw things up in ways similar to that (I think I simply couldn't see anything.)

I do (a 680). Running at an internal res of 2560x1440 on a 1080p monitor at a near-constant 60fps. Hell of an upgrade from my old 512MB 8800 card.

Ugh, any SMAA? Would really like to see your full DSFix.ini text. I am buying a Titan in May and really want to have an idea of what to expect as far as performance in Dark Souls. Just based upon what you are stating it looks like I wont be able to downsample at all using a 2560x1600 Dell U3011 and maintain 60fps everywhere except bonfires. Although maybe I could push 3840x2400 internal res at 1600p if I got a Classified version and OC'd like crazy. Going off of a 50% boost estimate in performance over what you're getting. Also plan on posting screen shots and what I can push within 24hours of getting the card in May; so annoying evga wont announce if they are going to release an FTW or Classified version. Altho it will be unplayable, I also really want to see how far I can push the DSfix.ini settings without the game crashing. That way I can see the difference in quality from downsampling at 5120x3200 or higher at 1600p to what I can manage at 60fps.

I have a question. So I haven't played Dark Souls since November and I was using an old version of the fix (0.8). I wasn't using any of the AA, SSAO, 60 fps stuff so I didn't update. But I want to get back to the game and the patch forced me to update the fix. I noticed something interesting.

0.8
Code:
# texture filtering override
# 0 = no change
# 1 = [B]enable supersampling by downscaling (use only if you need it!)[/B]
# 2 = full AF override (may degrade performance, currently implemented badly, do not enable)
# if in doubt, leave this at 0

2.01
Code:
# texture filtering override
# 0 = no change
# 1 = [B]enable some bilinear filtering (use only if you need it!)[/B]
# 2 = full AF override (may degrade performance)
# if in doubt, leave this at 0

The bolded part has been changed. I'm using downsampling. Does that mean that in the newest version I don't have to set the texture filtering override to at least 1?

Hey anyone else have a vertically stretched HUD while using borderless fullscreen? The HUD seems to scale to the ingame resolution selection which is not the correct aspect ratio due to windowed mode being enabled.

Just force AF through your drivers and keep it off in DSFix.

... should I just consider that required legal mumbo jumbo and go ahead doing it without a worry anyway?

"This program must run with data execution protection (DEP) enabled. You cannot turn off DEP for this program."

Help! This is the error message I get when I tried to turn off DEP for Dark Souls. I want to play with unlocked frames, but it always crashes on start up.

How important is DEP?

Recently bought from steam sale. Two days now, trying to get dsfix to work.

Dsfix would freeze the game at the "press start" screen. Before the DARK SOULS logo would fade in.

Tried so many settings, finally found the solution.

Turn steam in game community off.

Simple once steam is loaded, Steam->Settings->In-Game Tab->uncheck "enable Steam Community In-Game" box.

DS is running at 1920x1080 60fps. Happy now.

Gonna change it to 1920x1200 now, see if I break anything.

No you will need something like the offline version of motion in joy to emulate a 360 pad. Then it will work fine.
Yeah, you can also get a texture mod to replace the button prompts with their PS versions. DS3 works much better for this game than the 360 pad IMHO.

Looks like the steam sale is going pretty well:
Notice: We are currently out of product keys for Dark Souls: Prepare to Die Edition. We have requested them from the publisher and as soon as we have more they will be automatically added to new owner's Steam accounts.

Can't stand coming back to a game a few months later only to find that you crash upon loading a save game or creating a new game as soon as the loading for the actual gameplay starts. Also asked me for my GFWL cd key even though I went through this when I first installed the game months ago.

Ok posted this in OT but here's my problem:

Initially I lost critical progress due to some fuckup with Steam Cloud and decided to revert back to earlier save (used a DSFix backup file). I was using a old version of DSFix (1.4 or something probably) and the game started crashing after ~30seconds.

Tried reinstalling the newest version and started to be able to play for about 5 minutes before executable stopped working. Tried another backup save and it's now crashing on character menu. :(

Wat to do.
