Reviews:

IGN - 9.1

Anyone worried about EA eschewing Real Racing 1 & 2’s $10 up-front asking price in favor of a nickel-and-dime freemium strategy can put his or her mind at ease. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve spent 34 hours in Real Racing 3, with 21 hours spent on the actual racetrack. I’ve medaled in 247 events and competed in a total of 476 races. I own seven cars, five of which are fully upgraded.

And I haven’t spent a cent.

Touch Arcade

Real Racing 3 is a weird game to review. On one hand, it's free, and is the absolute best looking game available on the App Store right now. You need to experience the sights and sounds of the game as it is downright jaw-dropping to see what Firemonkeys has accomplished on a technical level. On the other, it feels incredibly strange to take a genre that's typically very hardcore and wrapping it in free to play trimmings with hard timer-based stopping points. The juxtaposition between awesome adrenalin-fueled racing and the "Sorry bro, insert coin or come back later" is very, very odd.

Touch Gen - 4 out 5 stars

Nice OT!
I've been playing the Android version on my tablet. I really like it. I'm 10 races in, and I haven't been nagged about IAP yet.

No reflections in the mirrors. :( Looks like the iOS version looks better.

This is better than I expected. Real Racing 2 was the first thing I used when testing out an iPad so it has a special place in my heart, but it got old quick.

Now to put it on my phone for the 5 hour-long doctors visits to keep me occupied. I need to find some fun games for those moments since I've played every Angry Bird level in just a few visits...lol

Yea, mobile gaming is limited to lobby waiting but that adds up to a lot of time. :D

Edit: I'll have to compare the Android version to the iOS version and see I guess. I knew it wouldn't look as good as they've made it out to be, but I hope it looks better on an iPad.

I played some, I don't like how it's set up compared to RR2. I haven't gone back to it since. I played RR2 nonstop when I first got that and this isn't how I imagined the sequel. If this is meant to be an OT, it needs more info like what you need the IAP for, how you're made to wait for everything, etc. It doesn't even mention the base game is free. And the app store link is wrong.

I just quickly through a thread together because we didn't have one. Sorry if it sucks.

PS: Thanks fixed the App Store Link.

Amazing game, been playing and haven't been asked or forced to spend a penny. RR3 100x better than RR2

Edit: I spoke to soon, this game is bad with the terrible AI and a grindfest if you want to play free.

I don't understand why I would turn off the breaking assist. I don't have to do anything and win most races...

The brake assist is a bit too aggressive at places, you do way better times without brake assists... and you can play quite aggressive too :P

Only way to play racing games is go full speed into a corner and bounce off your enemies. Sure you gotta repair... but w/e.

Here is a screen from my DNA @ 1080p.

here's as close as i can get on iphone 5

People wanna play me, gc is chickendig

Turn off all brake, steering and traction assists ASAP. I left mine on for a few days, and once I turned them off (you'll get much better times with manual control) I was ALL OVER the road for way too long.

Full control feels so much better and lets you drive much more aggressively, posting far better scores.

Amazing that they've been able to squeeze this level of graphical fidelity out. How does it run, frame-rate wise?

While I agree with braking and steering, I've found traction to be more helpful than harmful.

Gran Turismo for smartphones. I hope this runs decently on my Galaxy Note II.

Incidentally, if you're looking for an arcade-style street racing game, I suggest Need for Speed: Most Wanted.

Here's my ipad 4 shot for comparison:

And here's an android screenshot from my s3:

I have no idea why it looks that terrible lol, but it isn't too noticeable in the smaller screen of the phone

For anyone who cares, I have reflections in the mirrors in my game. The framerate seems really inconsistent though, I guess the aging ARM Mali-400MP isn't exactly holding up well against the 720p resolution on my Note II.

Wait times were better before the official release. Now they're horseshit.

Surprised that there's been so little mention of this in this thread so far, given that the ios gaming thread was full of complaints when it launched elsewhere. I had actually started to suspect that they'd dropped all that bullshit for this release.

Yep, doesn't run too good on my s3 as well (it was struggling real bad on the intro). I wonder if an OC will help.

Here's another ipad 4 shot, this time cockpit view:

I played this game for a good 8 hours until I stopped playing from loss of interest. It's good until you realize the pay model and how AI works and other bs

If it was an actual game without the bullshit, this would easily be the best racer on mobile

I'll give it a crack if it's out in the UK. Sim racers are one of the few genres I can't really get on with on a phone, but I appreciate the effort they've put in. I'm not too phased by lengthy wait times because I've got eight million other games to be getting on with.
