Real Racing 3: It's the Sim Racer You've Always Wanted On Your Phone/Tablet

I guess you have an iPad 2 Alextended? I guessed I was getting such poor fps because it's running stupidly high res on iPad 3. I was gonna request that they add the option to run it at iPad 2 res, but if you're getting poor performance too then I guess it's just a disaster all round.

Isn't the mini just a smaller iPad2? With the same resolution which means the smaller physical size of the screen doesn't also result in better performance? If that's so, I guess people have extremely different definitions for what "pretty good" is.

I checked out how it runs on the Mini on youtube, and it looks really nice and smooth. Did you try clearing all your running apps from ram? A restart works too.

Link to that nice and smooth video then. Doesn't look nice and smooth in vids like this but it could be the camera.

Though it still looks worse than the other device's framerate they test before that as they show off two versions of the game.

My device was just restored/updated earlier today and has 50% space left and no apps open.

Yes but the iPad3 should have more juice and so run it better than iPad2 at that res.

Runs great on my iPhone 5, as it should.

EDIT: just beat Chris Johnston(superpac) in head to head. Was that actually him, or the time shifted ghost?

The moment I see 2 types of money in a game, it's going bye bye.

I did give it a try. First imporession was "whoa, this looks great". However, the framerate is all over the place on an iPad 3. It's beautiful but laggy. Probably runs smooth on an iPad 4.

Bought an S15 and went to the parts shop to buy decent tyres (first mod I do in any racing sim). Bought the tyres and then had to wait for two minutes for them to be delivered. What the hell, EA? This is not how You make a F2P game unless You want the FarmVille backlash and go the way of Zynga (dodo).

I tolerate microtransactions in Infinity Blade, because the only thing paying extra $ does is buy more in game cash for those that don't want the grind (I'm used to the grind, have been playing JRPG's all my life).

It doesn't run that perfect on an iPad 4 - I experienced some slow downs. But I deleted the game nonetheless. I don't like the ecosystem and the part where you have to wait for parts to arrive. I would have gladly paid 10 bucks upfront for a full game.

That doesn't make any sense...

How would the same resolution in a smaller screen mean better performance? It still renders the same amount of pixels.

Not a fan of the game setup at all.

It is somewhat better the more cars you have, but to me a racing game is meant to play the same car on the same track shaving time off doing lots of laps.

They took out replay? WTF

They took out "real" online multiplayer? WTF

So it doesn't make sense that I said exactly the same thing you did. Neat. We're no sense bros.

Playing on iPhone 5 here and the game is smooth enough...not even sure ill bother with putting in on my iPad 3.

I don't mind the f2p model...sounds like it rewards people for driving safer and not bumping and nudging your way to the finish line...which is something I've always wanted in a racer.

The one thing I was surprised didn't make it in was replay. Especially considering how replay and video sharing is really becoming a thing. I mean on a phone like that why not have it so you could easily share your replays on Facebook or Youtube?

Also my friends are all downloading it today so I'll comment on how the "multiplayer" goes.

It's lame. Your friends time is recreated by an AI driver, it doesn't actually follow his line at all. Not like racing a ghost. And there is no live online play.

It doesn't matter... even after a few races of being 100% clean you will face oil changes, suspension wear, engine rebuilds, new tires and so on with cool down timers. Your car needs maintenance even if you don't hit anything.

So I thought about creating a new thread for this, but I guess I wont.

I wonder. Do all of you who have played this one think it's the best looking phone/tablet game ever (even if the framerate doesn't always hold up)? What would you compare it to graphically speaking in the world of dedicated handhelds and consoles?

Yes, I think it's the prettiest game I've played on my phone, but far from the best game.
I'd say a somewhat fair comparison regarding graphics for this game is Ridge Racer 7 for PS3/Ridge Racer Vita.

The iPad 2 outperforms the iPad 3 in most games. I have yet to play a game on my Mini where performance is poor.

I don't mind the model at all, mainly because I'm not the biggest fan of racing games. I would have never tried it were it not free, but I'll definitely give it a shot now that it's easily accessible.

Oh...bummer.

Not compatible with my Xperia p.it's not that old device I hate when such things happen will try ion note 2 tomorrow

Sorry for super late reply, by 'pretty good' I meant it barely goes under 20 fps, I wasn't expecting it to run good on the mini to begin with.

By the way this game is painful to play to me lol, I'm the type that divebombs, and that takes quite a toll on the car, I'm waiting 5+ minutes for services and spending money on repairs like crazy.

Real Racing 2 HD is a muuuuch more complete experience. From the multiplayer to the AirPlay optimization, it just makes RR3 pale in comparison. Gameplay IS better in RR3, though, and of course, so are the graphics. If only EA made a fully featured paid version, without the waiting for repairs/revisions bullcrap. I'd pay $15!

They'd rather get the ongoing $60+++ from whales via IAP rather than cater to the one time 10-15 dollar crowd like yourself.

In light of that recent article about that 5 year old kid who spent 1700 pound sterling on a F2P game like this, I'd think they're heading in the right direction lol. More chumps = More bucks.

So just started playing again. Service times are now back down to what they were before. Can't wait til a week from now when they jack it up "unknowingly to us" again. Sigh.

ok played a little bit on note 2.
and my conclusion is mobile gaming is meant to played while taking dump sitting in office or when on a bus ride.

I like the game but the fact that it doesn't sync progress across ios devices really limits my enjoyment of it. I switch between my iPhone and iPad all the time and I'd rather not have to repeat the same races.

Same goes for angry birds but that's another story I guess.

Any screen comparisons between iPhone 5 and top Android (Adreno 320) devices?

There you go. :)

I have to wait 5 minutes to change my oil? Are you kidding me? Loved the first 2, made it 6 races in and deleted this one. Way to ruin a great game.

They've been 'down' since version 1.0.2 which released 27th feb, which also brought along instant repairs. compared to version 1.0.0 this is the lowest they've been so far.

I had to wait 2 hours after I bought my BMW to drive it lol. This game.

The game is beautiful, I still have it on my iPad and I might keep it on there but they completely ruined it. I'd much rather pay $15 for the game and everything it has than to have to go through all the little things this games makes you wait through. EA ruins everything they get their hands on.

I've just tried it out on my Kindle Fire and it runs pretty well, although the lack of mirror reflections is a bit annoying. I'm definitely not spending an real money on this game but I have to say that it's been pretty fun for the first few races. I'll have to wait and see how bad the push for microtransactions becomes.

Anyway my main concern is that there seems to be no way to set a username and I'm stuck with the name 'Guest'. Is connecting to Facebook the only way? There's no way I'm connecting my Facebook account to something like this. I've seen some other players with usernames that look custom made so it would be nice to know if there's a way to do it.

Uses your gamecenter name

edit: oh kindle fire... IDK then :P

I think a lot of the outrage over this game has been pretty exaggerated. I've played the game for around 6 hours (the NZ version and the NA version), and I've yet to see any of the horror stories of repair costs that the Eurogamer review describes. Aside from the rare occasion where I have 10 repairs and several maintenance jobs to do at once, I haven't come out of an event with less cash then when I started. Also, I've never been rammed from behind so hard that I have had to pay $2,000+ in repair costs.

A lot of unnecessary costs can be avoided just by playing better and driving with more skill. And it isn't like you are charged for every time you tap a wall or another car. It is only when you hit something with significant force that repairs are needed. One race I was in had me lightly tapping and scraping a dozen or so other cars and I had no repair cost at the end.

Actually, the model this game adopts has a few advantages that make the game more enjoyable to me, as crazy as that sounds. In most sim racing games, you quickly become so flush with cash that buying new cars and events quickly becomes a non-event, you aren't concerned about damage because there is little downside to incurring it during a race, and you are commonly expected to place first in every race. In this game, you are heavily encouraged to drive more safely and conservatively, each upgrade and car purchase feels like a big deal, and winning an event feels earned rather than expected.

While overall the gameplay is really satisfying and engaging for a mobile game, it has some issues. The biggest one is that the game should give you three cars at the beginning instead of one. It's a bad idea to penalize people with no other car to play with when they are just learning and most likely to crash and be forced to stop playing due to maintenance. The other big thing is that the costs and wait times for repairs and maintenance has been altered several times and there is no way to know where that balance will end up. Also, there isn't enough music in the game.

And, of course, I'd like to make a bit more money from each race than you do, but that's the price you pay for a free to play game.

So I thought about creating a new thread for this, but I guess I wont.

It's definitely the most technically impressive game on a tablet or phone, but between the varying levels of performance even on new devices and some serious pop-in on other vehicles that, on my iPhone 4S, doesn't let you see if someone ahead is braking before the high-detail model pops in, I wouldn't say it is the best looking game on phones or tablets.

Just on a technical level, I'd say it falls just short of Forza 3. It's definitely pulling off more impressive effects and has higher detail vehicles and tracks than a Ridge Racer or a Gran Turismo 4.

Can I play the game offline and if so how? Don't want it chewing up all my data limit.

Yep, no online connection required to play.
