PlayStation Vita Sales See Massive Spike in Japan (nearly six times increase)

That's a pretty nice headline IGN's got there. It is a fact, but pretty sensationalistic.

It's great that Vita has did good this week, but it also is worrying. The magnitude of the jump of the price drop + new releases is a bit underwhelming. It would be safe to assume this is going to be the highest week for Vita compared to the weeks coming up. If that is the case, then what is going to be the baseline for Vita once there are no new releases? 17K would be a huge improvement over what was happening before the price drop and would indicate that there is a potential for it. The 3DS jumped to 196K and then hovered around 54K for a large number of weeks. With the Vita, it is kinda worrying about the future due to this reason. Hopefully I'm wrong.

And some people in this thread should just calm down.

I am SICK of these Vita-Dreamcast comparisons.
Vita will NEVER match the Dreamcast in great games and love.

An F2P game like pso2 selling so many copies at 60$ is simply insane. When there is also a superior PC version.

I'm guessing the in-game items that came with that package were very worth it, lol.

Vita is damn expensive when compared to say a PS3.

New tends to cost more. I mean people don't really bring up the 3DS' price compared to the Wii, do they?

Media Create figures, precedent and overall sales-Age knowledge is not "agenda".

It is not "agenda" to note that the Vita is underperforming in the market.

Lets look at the quote:

Nice numbers that won't last more than a week or two.

Vitas dead, you guys just need to let go.

noobasuar is from three weeks in the future!? Although not here, there are also a lot of comments which are along the lines of : "lol, Vita bomba". When people put 'lol' in their sentence its going to make people more defensive overall isn't it?

Since when did B tier=100k?

So Sony has a massive price cut, Senran Kagura outsells PSO2, and you think PSO2 caused the spike

Except PSO2 is an F2P game on PSN, its like comparing a collectors edition of one game to the regular SKU sales of another game.

I'm guessing the in-game items that came with that package were very worth it, lol.

It isnt worth all that much. You could buy ALOT of stuff with 60$ on pso2. and considering the old phantasy star games pushed over somewhere close to 240k? on launch week on the psp. This is definitely a huge title.

I might agree with the memory card reason though , definitely seems like downloading the game and buying an 8gb card just for it would push people to just get the retail version.

i hope you own a vita. only then will your comment be validated. and for the record i by no means agree with your statement. vita is a super underrated system. it's been an amazing 5 months of ownership, and i'm not the biggest fan of mobile gaming + digital downloads in general.

as long as stores can restock Vita will sell more this week then last thanks to the price cut and soul sacrifice.

this shows the vita has legs and there is a want for it. a worldwide price cut as well as a larger pricecut will have significant impact

speaking of which, I saw a guy playing vita on the subway today, I almost went to congratulate him for being so brave and for standing up against gaf's vile hatred

I don't understand why a major video game outlet publishes this news in this format. Anyone remotely informed with the situation can tell you that the spike is indeed temporary and was induced through a combination of price drop and two semi-major releases for the platform. "VITA SALES SURGE!" seems so unnecessary because it distorts the real image. It's a highly optimistic news article, and for what reason? We've known the price drop was incoming, we've known the titles were incoming, we knew the new colors were incoming.. so obviously the hardware spiked. There's no changing of tides, and it's almost a sure guarantee it won't sustain these sales longer than a few weeks. I mean it's not like news articles like this draw in huge outside page views... just seems like a weird spin on a story.

It won't show if it has legs though. The week after will.

Lol

The Vita hate on Gaf is astounding.
I don't think it's hate, it's just too hard to resist being an armchair analyst sometimes and the Vita is low hanging fruit. At least I hope not. PS Vita is legitimately a nice portable system with some fun games, regardless of market trends. I hope they can inject some momentum into it this year.

Who 'hates' Vita? Pointing out that it's selling badly, and will likely continue to sell badly is 'hate'?
It's not just this thread, it's all of the threads. The daily "Vita is teh Fail" threads. People say this shit with glee. They actively want it to fail. Though it may have subsided a bit lately because now they have the Wii U to latch on to. People love to see things fail. I have no idea why, but they do.

I own a vita, enjoy playibg on it. It is a beautiful handheld powerhouse. But even i can see it is failing.. I don't want it to, but it is the sad truth as it stands now.

And please move your avatar a bit up, just like 1 cm...

Don't tarnish Sony's reputation by comparing them to a company that had one hit system and a slew of failures.

Genesis, Saturn and Dreamcast were the best gaming years of my life.

Vita reminds me of the awesomeness that was Sega GameGear. [Not sarcasm]

I have/had both. GameGear's battery life was somehow worse than the 3DS. Er wait, that was probably because it pushed more pixels.

I kid I kid. But seriously that thing's battery life was horrendous. When I had my overnight flights to Tokyo from Chicago I'd have to buy a whole set of batteries even with my batteries being rechargeable.

But it is failing. And 60K units one week in one territory of the world does not change that fact. The posts might be beating a dead horse, but that doesn't mean they aren't true.

As always, we see so much animus toward the Vita whenever some good news pops up.

It's clear some GAF'ers just want Vita to fail and always have.

Animus?

On topic: great, great spike. If this results in an increased baseline for Vita (and I believe Vita will rise to selling 15-18k units every week after the effects of the spike die down), then it will be a good first step towards recovery.

Well argue all you want about failing or not, dead or not, I just hope it can sustain good enough sales worldwide to get more new releases. Even if those games are just niche and/or indie titles with the occasional Bend, Japan Studio, MM, Guerilla Cambridge type game mixed into the fold.

I'm okay with that.

Edit: it does have a great attach rate as well, so hopefully that helps too.

Love my Vita. Hope the upswing in the east will have a ripple effect here eventually. After just re-upping for 15 months of PS+ and all the fantastic games available on the Vita as part of the various promos I'm happier than ever to be a Vita owner. I'm also really excited about the 2013 games coming out, especially Soul Sacrifice, Ys and Tearaway

I would buy a Vita at $600 if it had more than 2 games I wanted to play on it. I wouldnt buy one now even @ $150.

More games or bust.

There are way more than dozens of games I want on the Vita (thanks to PS1 games on PSN), but that Amazon amazing 32GB Vita memory card discount thread reminds me why I haven't picked it up yet.

This week... Soul Sacrifice.

Next... One Piece 2

I predict march numbers will be high for Vita this month.

After that? We'll see... or anybody here suspected the Senran Kagura success?

So at this point its impossible for the vitas fortune to change. Unbelievable. Granted its one fuck of an uphill climb, but its not done quite yet.

]So at this point its impossible for the vitas fortune to change[/B]. Unbelievable. Granted its one fuck of an uphill climb, but its not done quite yet.

Unless every 3rd party drops what they are doing and makes exclusive Vita games like FF15 Vita, MH4 Vita, MGS Vita, yes it's pretty much impossible for it to recover to any signficant baseline based on what is announced. Of course it would probably be better for the Japanese market if everything outside the 3DS was a flop right now, but 3rd parties don't seem very interested.

Few things are literally impossible, but it would take a significantly stronger software lineup, speaking strictly from a sales perspective, than anything announced or released for the platform up to this point to turn things around in Japan (demographics make the West basically impossible to crack, unless Tearaway becomes the next Mario or something; dudebro console spinoffs may be profitable for their publishers, but the last holiday shows that they can't drive hardware sales to any great degree). After two E3s, two Gamescoms, two TGSes, and over a year's worth of atrocious sales figures, there's little reason other than wishful thinking to believe that's going to happen.

PS1/PSN games dont count. Only exclusives count. If its not exclusive I can play it on any other system I own (which is all of them). Every other system has had some version of a killer app or at the very least a repeated string of damn good exclusives. Vita has a few games in the B- to B+ category and thats it. I'm not buying a Vita to play PS1 games.

In GAF there is no such thing as a profitable with decent market share platform.
There is only domination, everything else is doom.

Oh I believe in getting a profitable decent market share. I just don't think Vita is going to be at that place. But of course if we're going to generalize in many people eyes when defending their system of choice you either completely agree with them or its doom mongering.

that's x9 last weeks wiiU sales which was at 7k.

:)

if that's doomed, wiiU's already dead.

Sure if we ignore the fact that Wii U has been out for not even 3 months and Vita has had over a year for correction. Even then Wii U's prospects as a healthy platform do not look great.

1) Wow, I just don't understand why some posters keep bringing up Wii U sales as if it is relevant.
2) Last week's Wii U sales were a bit above 9K.

On to my ignore list you go.

just stating some facts.

Well you certainly don't seem to like to do fact-checking. ;)

This right here is the real Media Create thread we were waiting for.

Let's gather guys!

Haha, yea.
