Sim City is now down, the maintenance message is amazing

Cancelled my preorder on amazon the night before release. I made a damn good decision too. This launch has been a serious mess.

Why do people put up with this shit? I'm going to seriously L O L in a year when EA brings down the login servers for Sim City 2014.

I'll laugh even harder when, just before they launch Sim City 2015, they'll shut down the servers for Sim City 2013 since 'not enough people' will still be playing to justify keeping the servers up.

It's like launch day on an MMO.

Except this is a single player game with forced multiplayer functions.

And those multiplayer components have, arguably, made the game significantly worse.

Ridiculously restrictive city size.
Always on DRM.
No custom areas.

I don't know if there will be one in 2015

If you follow EA's business model for this and Command and Conquer.

They are focusing on creating a service platform so they can constantly sell you micro transactions, DLC, and expansions. They might not need to create a new product for a little while.

Ha and the game opens up in a few hours all around Europe.

Those servers are going to fry.

What's amazing was one gaffer reporting paying an extra 20€ to download earlier from Asia, when this was oh so predictable. The power of nostalgia.

I consider myself a bit "older" of a gamer at 41. I grew up with Vectrex, the Atari 2600, Colecovision, Intellivision, Odyssey 2..basically when video gaming was in it's infancy.

You younger guys and ladies are "inheriting" the legacy of home gaming and what you are supporting with always on DRM in today's games is not something you should support nor be proud of.

You only back up claims from the likes of EA who state that gamers love micro-transactions, free to play models and suspect DLC(some of which is cut from full games to monetize it later).

Remember just buying a game, putting it into your console and playing it? Now we have internet activations, always on DRM, micro-transactions, DLC instead of mod tools and upcoming consoles that may block used games.

That's not what gaming is about. It's not fun. It's not enjoyable. It's corporate suits sitting in an office thinking of additional ways to screw over you younger folks and extract more money from your pockets.

They're using the guise of "development costs", "next gen" features and so forth to justify the nickel and diming of your wallets.

Don't embrace this legacy. Don't support it. If you support it, you only have yourselves to blame when your "digital future" some are so eager to embrace is locked behind pay walls or downed servers.

Please fellow gamers, wake up and don't support this.

Spot on.

I'm 35 and have been gaming longer than i can remember (cpc 464 with green screen)
This is getting daft.

I cracked with season passes. Buy our £40 game and then spend another £18 to get more of it. We did include the first bit of dlc on the disc to make it quicker for you to play it. If you're really lucky one of the 4 extras will be worth playing. (i'm looking at you, RE5 and GOW3)

Always on DRM. Great. IF your internet connection is fast enough. and IF the servers can cope (which they never do as it would cost too much to ensure enough servers are available for launch which wont be needed a few weeks or months later)

I already know 3 or 4 people ready to give up a hobby they love if pre owned games are blocked.

if you're wondering where this post is going, i've got no clue either, just a small rant

Don't understand people at all. Everyone here blames the DRM, and no one blames the incompetent server people. If this game had no DRM, it would still be unplayable online. Why is that ok? Why is everyone ignoring this point? People are ok with incompetence and a shitty product as long as it can be played offline? When did this garbage become acceptable? Who decided it was acceptable for all these online game launches to be complete and utter shit? What other product can you buy and have immediately fail where the multitudes defend it because the game is "really popular". Everyone here getting their panties in a twist because companies using retarded forms of DLC, but not one complaint about the companies also being completely stupid, incompetent, and inept.

Seriously, every person here complaining about the DRM, what would your stance be if this game had no DRM? Would you be ok with the servers being complete garbage and being unable to play online?

I won't buy another Origin product, and the DRM is not the reason. The reason is because its all complete shit.

We don't know that. Forcing everyone online (even people who only want to play single player) is most likely overloading EA's servers. Had they let people play the game while making logging in completely optional this might very well have been avoided.

Ahahahah I remember the people defending always online DRM. You won't even notice it! Just like Diablo 3!
But the implementation is what always sucks, not merely the existence of DRM.

The always online stuff is inevitable whether you like it or not. What should be questioned is how it's done. This SimCity debacle is worthy of its own laughing stock.

As bad as users are having it, EA is having it just as bad. Not making excuses but imagine spending the last few years of your life making this game and having it release where people who have bought it can't even play it and then telling other people not to buy it.

I'm a chump for preordering it. I'm part of the problem.

I'm glad someone is willing to take responsibility. Kudos sir.

Ah yes and imagine having the simple foresight to see something like this happ-....Oh.

Reading this thread, I get the impression that a lot of people are almost excited that the servers are wrecked because it means they can say "HAH! Told you so, always-online defenders! Where are you now, huh?!".

That's far too reasonable for this thread.

Yeah, imagine engineering a completely predictable situation through your own transparently stupid decisions and then suffering for it. I feel really sorry for them.

I'd say everyone's blowing things out of proportion a bit because it's only a problem in the first few days, and should just go in pretending launch is a week after the real launch, but then I remember all the times Ubisoft always online DRM servers went down for periodic maintenance or got destroyed by a bunch of new customers after a sale or price drop, and I can't help but worry that Sim City DRM will be an ongoing problem as well.

Uh, you'd be able to play your $60 product offline until then. This way, you can't play it at all.

Correct, because no game should be always online short of MMOs. Even those should allow you to roam around or tool with your character offline if you chose to.

The damn 'server people!' Always ruining it for the rest of us.

If the game had no DRM, a single player, offline component, and an optional multiplayer component no one would be complaining right now.

Even if the servers were overloaded, which they probably wouldn't be with the reduced traffic, people could still play the game they purchased.

I agree with the idea of what you are saying in general ... but you're putting a pretty wide paintbrush on an extremely large demographic (games) for a seemingly few amount of games that actually have these issues.

Almost this entire generation I've enjoyed just putting the disk into my machine. Things may change with the PS4 and 720 but I haven't seen any facts so I can't assume.

There are issues, there are troubles. And to be honest I think we're at a tipping point but I don't think it's going to be as bleak as a lot of people say.

I'm glad someone is willing to take responsibility. Kudos sir.

That's daft. It's not his/her responbsibility.

Some of you guys seem oblivious to the fact that millions probably bought the game having no idea that it required such a connection.

Correct, because no game should be always online short of MMOs. Even those should allow you to roam around or tool with your character offline if you chose to.

While some may have that opinion, it's strange seeing people being, as I said, almost excited that the game they bought isn't working because it means they can throw random bait posts toward anyone who doesn't feel the same they feel.

I bought the game to play it online. Yeah, I could be playing it offline, but the whole point of this one is the online stuff. I guess its ok. You can get a worse experience offline guys, so its all good! Its the DRMs fault! Not a bunch of incompetent people behind the scenes!

Erm, surely the incompetent people are those who insisted on the DRM and caused all the problems?

So millions of people share the responsibility of telling EA they can do whatever they want. I fail to see your point?

Ah yes and imagine having the simple foresight to see something like this happ-....Oh.

They obviously can't meet demand and severely underestimated it. They are also getting punished for it. How many people are not buying the game right now because they know they can't play it? On top of this they are gettin bent over by the press so not only are they losing cash but their reputation which is already pretty shaky is getting hammered.

Interestingly Microsoft has no problem with always on DRM. The entire Xbox Live Indie Games channel is set up like that and there is only ever a problem if Xbox Live as a whole is down.

While theres some truth to this theres also a lot of populist nonsense. Theres nothing wrong with free to play models, dlc or even microtransactions as long as theyre handled well. Theres also no need for "air quotes" around stuff like development costs and next gen features, because development costs are massive these days for larger games/studios (for even smaller studios as well, e.g. the recent Skullgirls funding drive) and for next gen features. As long as its not exploitative or required DLC is fine, it allows the developers to cover their development cost and make a profit and allows the consumer the choice of more content for a game they like.
