Sim City is now down, the maintenance message is amazing

Seems like people are getting the same always-online problems that troubled Diablo 3, even in SINGLE PLAYER...well, I learned my lesson after that situation. I won't be getting SC anytime soon.

Since some old EA related memes have popped up, I just got this one I read earlier after a search:

LOL how long ago was this?
lol wtf. i haven't laughed this hard in weeks

Anybody knows how to go about getting a refund? I can't even contact a tech support.

And shame on gaming media for not giving this the attention it deserves.
you don't need a refund. this happens with every MMO.

go play something else for a couple days while they work out the server stress and it'll never have problems again.

Sorry I disagree. I have already paid for this POS. I can't play it -now-. I want my money back -now- and when the problems go away (if they ever do) then I might come back and buy it again.

Yes, I understand you are trying to be helpful but what you are suggesting is not acceptable.

Jesus Christ, haven't laughed this hard in a long time. Tears in my eyes.

"You will surely have the karkland."

Fucking lost it.

nope! this isn't something you'll have to deal with after the initial release rush and the game can't be pirated since the simulations are done server-side. stop spreading misinformation.

I believe the same was said of Diablo III, no? (Okay..I'll fess up and say I don't know if it's been pirated, but it's surely been hacked. I know one of the online-only "reasons" was to prevent cheating. That totally worked out.)

I'm pretty happy I didn't buy into this game..which I guess is ironic in a sense because I'm buying HotS next week. But at least that game I can play single-player, by myself, without having to be online!

iirc in the last thread someone said the only way to pirate Diablo 3 is redirecting it to connect to private servers which you still need to be online for. Same as how WoW was "hacked".

lol DRM defenders

And I was referring to the "always online" future mentioned in the post I quoted, not Sim City: Server Overload Edition. Calm down and pay attention.

this happens with every company yet it is always EA that get the crap.

Blizzard has gotten plenty of shit for Diablo III. EA gets perhaps a bit more than warranted blame at times, but in the case of DRM they're taking just as much as Blizzard did, if not less. Diablo was a much bigger launch with more widespread problems. (at least how I remember it, I've actually been able to play SimCity the past two days despite outages)

There is no single player in Diablo 3 or SimCity...

EA gets as much crap as blizzard(activsion)

but the diablo3 situation was way worse than this

If you try to get a refund your account may become banned.

Come on, thats just bullshit. Its not as if EA dont do enough stupid shit so you have to make up reasons theyre crap. If you try and get a refund you may or may not get it (looking at various threads/posts most people seem to get it). If you do a chargeback then your account is suspended and you can only play your current games offline, just like with Steam or most other online retailers.

Yeah I think some people forget how bad Diablo III was at launch. This game you can play albeit with server problems, D3, you had no access to at all.

I'm not defending DRM. -_-

It's fucking horrible how Ubisoft does it with fully single player games, but this new SimCity is more like an MMO so it not fair to bitch about needing to be logged in.

We need some kind of basic definition of ehat qualifies as an mmo, because right now, it's being used with any game featuring really basic social stuff.

Since Maxis decided to give this game MMO-like features? It's not the same as the old games.

If I had to guess, EA gave Maxis its marching orders. Implement a game system that demands the consumer to online at all times so they could pass off their always-on DRM as a "critical game feature". That is my theory, anyways.

I remember when you defended this Sim City when it's DRM/always online functionality was revealed, I'm glad you had faith in something that ended up being broken at release.

This is a terrible MMO launch.

Take away the multi player component from World of warcraft, you're left with an empty game.
Take away the mp from SimCity, you're left with a fully functional city management game.

The other shit you need from other cities can be provided if a person playing by themselves builds cities that can give needed supplies for the main city.

The social aspects can be mimicked by a single person, which begs the question why have social aspects as a main gameplay mechanic or there to begin with.

I am slow to catch on.

I gave EA my money for Dragon Age 2.

Then I gave them my money for Dead Space 2.

Then I gave them my money for Mass Effect 3.

Now, however, I stopped giving them my money.

It came up in one of the earlier threads where an "EA insider" revealed that Maxis had more or less free reign on the project. Though take that with as much salt as an anonymous forum "insider" deserves

They should have created a more indepth tutorial with multiple maps to practice on with AI before you join MP. That way they could cache authentication and let the servers populate at a more measured rate as people advanced into the main game.

Seems like very few companies grasp just how difficult it is to run high volume servers reliably and decide to not fully invest in large scale load testing before launch.

But surely this has happened with enough EA games in the past that they should have some experience? Why is no-one learning from the mistakes of the past?

Im surprised all the people defending always online arent here to do damage control.

It's because there's no point. There's no discussion to be had in it, just people yelling at each other. Especially when most people don't know the difference between an online game and DRM.

Wrong. Again. With Steam your account isnt banned. You have full access to all of your purchased games. You do have limited accessability in that you cant use community features nor buy new games. Though this limitation goes away nine weeks after the chargeback regardless.

Big companies take forever to learn. I imagine that the people in charge of server infrastructure have very little to do with the game development staff and the development staff is firewalled from the live production environment. This makes it very hard to deal with issues in a timely manner.

Where was I wrong the first time? Because I'm sure as fuck not wrong this time either. When your account on Origin is suspended you have full access to your purchased games. In fact Origin implemented that before Steam did (both originally didnt give you access to your previously purchased games when the account was suspended). The article I linked earlier quite clearly covered that. Perhaps you should try reading what people are posting?

I can already map out the first Sim City DLC's.

Sim City: Mass Effect Citadel edition
: Manage a sprawling space station filled with anything imaginable, make sure this city can be habitable from infinity and beyond!

Nobody wanted a new Simcity more than me. Nobody. But to this point and for various reason I have decided not to purchase this iteration. However, if your dlc existed I cannot say that my resolve would not waiver.

I only saw the post from you that I responded to. Mind linking me the post that you included the link mentioned above?

If you only saw the one post then why would you say "Wrong. Again"? Curious phrasing, no? Here's a link to the article in question - http://www.cinemablend.com/games/Va...u-Can-Now-Access-Your-Games-Banned-41650.html Anyhow, not sure how I got around to defending EA - though as I said previously people making up stuff when the facts themselves are already bad enough is just sad - so I'm out. Back to the wonders of the Queue!

My apologies. I just reread your post. Looks like I didn't read it to its completion.

Also it looks like that Valve changed its policy around the same time as EA though it didn't notify its users. I wouldn't be surprised if they both didn't do it based on a possible challenge to their policy through a lawsuit. Obviously I don't have any proof but seems more than a coincidence.
