Having high hopes on its Playstation 4 (PS4) game console, Sony internally expects the machine's annual shipments to reach 16 million units in 2013 with the supply chain expected to start mass shipments in August, according to sources from PS4 component makers. For more info, read the website

Isn't that, like, crazy? Wasn't PS2 shipment half a million?

How far does 16 mill extend eg. Is that enough to do one region, two, all at launch? I really want this in Europe before next year haha

Does this mean that the console will be launch this year in Europe?, 16 million only for USA and Japan seems too much in my opinion.

16 million? Oh god. Sony....stop trying to shoot for the sun.

That's a LOT of launch units. If the retailers even demand that much, we'll see a lot sitting on store shelves come January.

so is it 16 million a year (the annual comment)..? or 16 million in 2013..?

Ummmm there's no way they have 16 million at launch folks. That wouldn't even make sense.

perhaps they mean fiscal yeah which would still be absolutely insane.

Although I predict if the specs hold up the ps4 handily outselling Durango.

No way they'll sell that many in such a short time.

I have doubts they could make that many. And given the aren't even talking about a worldwide release in November it would seem impossible. At least if its calendar and not fiscal 2013.

Sony's fiscal 2013 runs from November 2013 to November 2014 right?

seriously though, if this is in a financial report from the company, that makes them confident of decent supply, which makes me more confident of a European launch this year.

No. Their FYs run from April 1st to March 31st of every year.

They won't even sell 6 million. Something tells me the low hardware sales issue won't be relegated to the Wii U this year.

Ahh wait - they are reporting shipments for all consoles together now

So probably it's a mistake beetween 16 milions PS3+PS4 vs PS4 only ?

Something is off about this story. There's no way they'll build 16 million of them that fast, and no way they'll ship or sell that many worldwide by the end of fiscal year 2013 if they somehow managed to construct that many.

As others have said, this makes me slightly hopeful that we will get a world wide launch which means the UK wont get screwed as always.

Please let this happen!

First of all, it should be clarified this isn't a Sony forecast.

Having high hopes on its Playstation 4 (PS4) game console, Sony internally expects the machine's annual shipments to reach 16 million units in 2013

Second, I would read this to mean that someone has looked at expected supply rate for launch and extrapolated what that would mean in terms of annual shipments. For example, if Sony wants a supply rate of 1-1.3m units a month in the run up to launch, that would suggest an annual shipment rate of 12-16m units per year if you used a straight extrapolation. But it would mean, for 2013, something like 3-4m units.

So it's not very useful as a number, if that's the case...since supply rate will vary after the launch months and will depend on demand. Sony's own demand forecasts will be something different.
