Shoot the Core! - Gaf Shoot ‘em Up (aka Shooter/SHMUP) Reference Thread

Someone sent us a 1 Life Clear of Satazius in the hardest mode, using a custom OST. No death, no miss, pure brutality. This, this is madness of the bloody good kind.

You have to see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53QBNlZX_jo

Insane was the way Satazius was meant to be played according to the devs. I can see why, heh.

Is this available on another site? I can't watch the video because it's blocked on YouTube in Germany, probably because of the custom music.

I bought Under Defeat HD from a gaffer, and I wanna know if it is normal the slight hiccup when you are shot. It is incredible annoying.

Otherwise, a great game.

Yup, it's always there. Not sure if it's a stylistic choice, or a technical limitation. It does bug me as well.

I fear it will be stuck on greenlight where it will have no chance in hell :/.
This will almost certainly happen, but being stuck in Greenlight Limbo won't stop Nyu Media from getting the games out via other services (Desura, GamersGate) like they did with Croixleur. So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Edit: you edited like right as I posted, lol!

Hopefully that won't be the case. Hopefully. Who knows. We are attending BitSummit and Valve will be there...

We are working on the localization of the games as I type. SITER SKAIN are a busy bunch but, good lord, these guys are legendary. Kamui is godly, I freaking love it. We've had plenty of discussions about the storyline too, which is very, very interesting.

(For anyone wondering or who doesn't bother to check profiles, I'm Nyu Media's MEC and a hopeless, absolute STG tard. I bought EVERYTHING from SITER SKAIN, including the book, long before I even started working, just saying :P)

Hmmm, it's available on Desura: http://www.desura.com/games/satazius

Oh, wait, wait, I think you meant the video, right? Ask DJI about it just in case. This is his thread at the shmups forums: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=20959

Perhaps it'll be put up for download at SuperPlay.

Yep, that's intentional. Lets you see exactly what hit you.

Well, it should be optional, just like some games that let you remove the slowdown, since I never saw it coming. I never understand the "defeat boss, game slowdowns like is defective" thing that most of the shmups have.

Well for the boss explosion, slowdown is baller shit, but in the middle of the level, it's a bit jarring. I would definitely like a toggle option.

I brought this up in the Cave thread about Cave games but I thought it'd be a good question to ask here about non-Cave games.

Im finding my favorite shmup mechanics are ones that let me convert bullets on the screen into gold. Im not talking destroy bullets, I'm talking moneysplosions or money clouds. Something about the visual thrill really gets me going.

Aside from Cave titles what are some shmups for any system you know of that let me convert bullets into money somehow? Im eyeing up Trouble Witches BTW.

Mars Matrix
Mars Matrix
Mars Matrix

Oh... and Mars Matrix.

Go play Mars Matrix.

It has CUBES. And the cubes are golden. Period.

In fact, why aren't you all playing Mars Matrix?

That or Giga Wing, where you reflect bullets to get GOLD MEDALS. BIG MEDALS!

I own Giga Wing, and hate it. I tried Mars Matrix, and was instantly bored. I guess I just hate fun or some shit.

I just looked up Mars Matrix and that is the oddest mechanic I've seen in awhile. You don't cancel bullets like normal and convert them into gold. You fly into them with a temporary pink hurricane shield and then try to steer the bullets that got caught in it into the enemies themselves to get more gold. The gold seems to level your shot.

Its interesting and looks harsh, its not quite what I'm after since he doesn't seem to be turning enemy bullets into gold, but is more or less just turning enemy bullets against their masters. Sounds fun though. Giga Wing seems to also use this mechanic but with a reflect style of doing it and not an attracting hurricane you need to drag around.

Gigawing sounds more my style than Mars Matrix as it lets me fly more conservatively and doesn't require me to fly into the belly of the beast as much.

Keep em coming guys! Im really digging this Dreamcast nostalgia. I also own a Saturn as well if that helps.

Have you tried Giga Wing 2? I like it more than either of those others, myself... pretty good game. Great graphics for the DC too, it's done in nice 3d. Giga Wing 2's crazy epic stuff. It's short, but so much fun! Plus, it's one of the very few shmups with a four player co-op mode.

NCXS, Amiami, and Amazon.com.jp have Shooting Love 10th Ann. up for preorder arriving May 30th. Yay for yet another 360 shooter!

I suppose I should have at least one Dreamcast shmup, even though I have no plans of getting a DC stick.

(Hmm... Hori VF4 PS2 stick -> Total Control Plus?)

Are Giga Wing 2 and Mars Matrix the ones to get?

You could always wire your main shmup stick with a PS360+, that now supports DC and Focusattack.com sells RJ45 to Dreamcast cables.

I've considered dual mod (especially since I'll need to adopt a PS3 stick for SEGA Cup) but considering that next gen is on the horizon and everyone here plays on 360, I probably won't bother. Too expensive to justify it. I'd rather get a DC converter for ~$30

GW2 was one of the few that slipped by me. I keep hearing good things about it, so I've always kept an eye on it. If I find it for cheap, I'll grab it for sure.

The DC has the best port of Psyvariar 2, which I love, and Zero Gunner 2 which is also a personal fave. Gunbird 2 is another solid Psikyo joint. Those would be my recommendations.

Giga Wing is probably better than Giga Wing 2, but I enjoy GW2 infinitely more out of the two. Also: 4 player shmup co-op.

Mars Matrix is in a league of its own, IMO. It's like... pulsing industrial techno, fucktons of bullets. You want me to dodge what? Throw their bullets back at them! GOOOOLD CUUUUBES!!!! Meter not full, wave of bullets I can't dodge! FUUUUUUUUUUCK! dead... instant respawn like Unreal Tournament. Repeat... continue? Credit feeding is for pussies. Start again...

It's weird how I can restart Mars Matrix over and over and over (or just do score attack and play one stage again and again) and never get bored. Like, ever.

BTW, would anyone want to trade a US Giga Wing 2 for my JP Giga Wing 2? They seem to be worth about the same and I'd rather have the US copy to match my US Giga Wing 1. Most people prefer the JP version for the voices, but they bug me.

Shooter PSA:

Section Z is out on the Capcom Arcade Collection. Great old school shooter that no one ever seems to talk about. Ever.

Go play it shooter-gaf!

Yeah, though Gunbird 2 is also worth very serious consideration. And Bangai-Oh! too...

Yeah, definitely get it if you get the chance. It's a great game.

Just pre-ordered the NEO XYX Limited Edition for the Dreamcast from NG:DEV.TEAM!

So excited. Those sprites are gorgeous.

That's been on the top of my hype list all year. Cannot wait to see what NGDev does with the game - was a big fan of Gunlord last year.

The Toaplan style graphics look amazing - and dat bobcat bomb...oh man.

Easily my most anticipated shooter this year so far!

More than Sturmwind?

Yep! More than Sturmwind, Ghostblade and Redux - although to be honest, I'm pretty excited for all of them!

Redux looks the most interesting of the bunch - though it really doesn't get a lot of chatter here. Reminds me of Rtype... with Fantasy Zone style colors. Weird - but pretty awesome.

Great year to be a Dreamcast owner!

Still find it utterly crazy they didn't offer the up-front "season pass" for these, but you can buy them all cheaper by waiting til May.

Did I miss something? Why will they all be cheaper in May?

I imagine it's because the original DUX was pretty hated.

Really? Never played DUX - and after looking at some vids, it does not look like I missed much. Still, Redux and Dux 1.5 both look pretty fun (not very challenging tho).

I believe Jeff Gerstmann posted the pricing for the individual purchases & the "buy everything" option coming in May, and it costs less to just buy the package deal.
Yeah, the all-in-one pack will be available for $30/2000MSP. So if you're interested in all of the titles, it makes sense to wait for that instead of buying the packs as they come out (which would cost $45/3600MSP).
