One month from today: BioShock Infinite

Now that I have it pre-ordered, I think it's time for another run through of Bioshock (maybe not 2 though...)

Played the game for like 2 hours today on a press event (PC version).... I really loved every second of it, the wait was worth it :)

I know you're NDA'd, but can you share whether the gunplay felt like it had a sufficient amount of combat strategy? Without getting into details, just describing if you felt it was a positive (or negative) direction compared to Bioshock would be enough

AI was excellent for Elizabeth, and good for the enemies. Combat feels solid, melee attacks using the sky-hook are BRUTAL. Hmmmm I only used two weapons but yeah, they look and sound good. About the skyrails, I played a few linear sections, it was really fun.

About the gunplay, yes, totally positive, at least for the sections that I've played.

Thanks man. So the skylines where intuitive to use?
Good to know the gunlay is solid.
I'm glad Liz's AI is good, not getting that right could really have ruined the game.

What would you say about the level design? Did it feel similar to BioShock?

Appreciate the answer, grindamasta.

I'm really stoked. My expectations after Bioshock 1 were for a combat that is similar in depth (i.e. not particularly deep, but fun to a point) and with the same breathtaking atmosphere and brilliantly unique sense of place as the original game.

My ultimate dream is for a game as engaging as System Shock 2, but I'll settle for what I said :D

I'd like my first playthrough to be with 1999 Mode enabled, however a couple of mates are also interested in the game, so I'll likely have to opt for Normal/Hard and save the former for a later playthrough by myself.

Wait..is Infinite co op?

Nice, thanks for the impressions.

late to the RIP party but still.

Ami go play Minerva's Den already.

Is there any way to play Minerva's Den without having the disc copy of Bioshock 2? My disc copy I found when I was looking for it the other day is cracked. Don't know how, but, didn't want to have to purchase another copy if I could avoid it...

If you're asking whether or not it's standalone, it does require Bioshock 2. Minerva's Den is sadly confined to the monstrosity known as GFWL, but it can be made to work with the Steam version of Bioshock 2 if you can have it gifted or something.

Yeah, I guess I'll get it that way then. Thanks

Does your library have video games? Our library (also in PA) rents out games for $1.50/week. They have Bioshock 1 and 2, gonna replay them next week.

I wish I was, but Cystm called dibs. I wouldnt even know where to start with making one and Id probably need a bit of assistance =/ (I have a basic idea though)

An Infinite tattoo eh? Dont give me ideas..

18 more days!

It's not just my thread. It's ours (GAFs) So if you want to contribute I am definetly interested in your input, particularly because of your invested time in anticipating this game. B33 is contributing too. I'll PM
you the details.

Hard from the get go, yes.

1999 for playthrough #2

Although 1999 can be unlocked from the start via input code.

Source on this? Game is on my radar if it is indeed possible.

Any detailed explanation on what they change in this mode?

The thread belongs to the people that's for certain this game can't wait.

How does GAF feel about the PS3 port being decent? Console games already feel like they're being gimped lately because of ageing tech.

FartofWar cemented on it yesterday. Its a couple pages back, plus it was said in an interview awhile ago.

For once 1999 mode is one I don't think I'd play right away even if it was unlocked from the start... it seems like the type of mode one should only play after one has familiarized themselves with the game and formed a strategy in their head for making it through that gauntlet :P

Yeah itll be my second run once Ive gotten acclimated to everything and know what Im doing.

Our goal with BioShock: Infinite was always a way to bring those people into this kind of game, but I think the plan right now – my thinking, anyway – is we’re going to hide this mode behind an old-school up, down, left, right, left, right, start button combination on the console to unlock it. You’re not going to have to finish the game to unlock it, but we’re going to hide it because the last thing I want is some guy who’s not an old-school gamer stumbling into this thing, because he’s going to think “alright, this game sucks, I’m never getting into this because it’s so brutal and so punishing – forget it!”

- No Gods or Kings. Only Levine. (Should be OT title)

1999 from the start for me, unless there are reports that it's not a good way to go.

My first playthrough of Bioshock was hard mode, and I forced myself to not use any vita chambers (this was before the option to turn them off was patched in). It added a lot to the experience, especially when it came to tackling Big Daddies.

Playing Bioshock on Hard is the only way to play it in my opinion. Turning off the Vitas is just an added bonus. That was like a pre 1999 mode in and of itself really. Quick saving whenever possible and as much as possible. And if you quicksaved before you got one shotted? Sorry bud. Good times. Cant wait to get back into it.

I played Bioshock on hard first go, but didn't want to attempt the Vita Chamber thing on the first go because the tension would probably be too over the top to be enjoyable (because I'd feel I never would be able to know what was around the corner, so I'd be so paranoid that I'd play the game in an extremely awkward manner). After I beat Bioshock I got the brass balls thing because then I was more comfortable with it.

1999 mode sounds like they really put a lot of thought into making it really different and uniquely difficult over the core difficulty modes, and I probably would feel the same without a test run of the game first. Hats off to ya, though... should have BRASS BALLS 2 for people who go with that mode on the first go and then beat it without dying,.

Probably should be called Iron or Steel Balls in that case..

Id give it a shot. Id be more than willing to do something like that over a Dead Space Hardcore mode or something of the like.

RPS: On PC, instead of the up down left right thing it should be the old Looking Glass, Deus Ex keycode…

Ken Levine: Oh, 0451? Yeah. Or we could put a codewheel into the box, or a cloth map…

1999 mode for start for me as well. IMO BioShock's biggest problem was it's difficulty. I mean, I ain't even a good shooter player and still hardly had problems to finsih the game on hard as you got flooded with medipack, money and ammo. There were times used suboptimal weapons just to clear some space for ammo. Like killing a Big Daddy with a machinegun. This totally ruined the game for me. No way I'm gonna use anything but the 1999 mode in Infinite.

I can't wait till this comes out. Just pre-ordered my copy the other day. I plan on playing on normal difficulty first, then hard. Pretty much what I did with the first 2.

Hah, just what I was talking about a couple pages back. It just seems so fitting!

1999 from the start for me, just because I want to be the blind guinea pig and because I think it might be a good slap in the face.

I'm tempted to start with 1999 mode, but I think it would be a mistake in a first playthrough, when the atmosphere and narrative are going to have the most impact. If you're distracted by the frustration that the mode is going to provide, the story beats, details of Columbia, and inevitable mindblow may not be appreciated as fully as when you're playing in the normal mode, which is probably more conducive to flow.

There is no way I'm bothering with any other mode. 1999 mode from the start.

Everything game should attempt to have something similar if they insist regenerating health, "instinct" vision, maps to reveal all secrets and just about all modern game systems.

What the best deal for this game currently?

Yeah I always try to play the game the way the developer intended at first so I can get a proper view on things. 1999 may be tougher (though I doubt it's a proper hardcore mode due to my belief that you can't make a true hardcore game out of a game designed not to be from the start) but it's not the true vision of the game.

Does this even matter though when their vision for it is something you can just blast through with little regards for anything? I mean, that interview pretty much says you have to actually think in 1999 mode. So what does this say about vanilla?

1999 mode is a must for a first playthrough, and any playthrough. I don't want to play a version of Bioshock Infinite where choice isn't meaningful.

I think a lot of these kind of games really start out with something much different in terms challenge. But through the course of development and because of the endless need to go for the broader appeal it eventually turns to crap.

Why have different ammo types if it's not necessary to utilize them?
Why present choices as some big commitment if they really aren't?
Why have a branching skill system if you are just going to be able to unlock it all by the end?
Why have things called secrets if they are just going to be notes on the map?

The list goes on and on. The funny thing is that so many games have systems like this these days but it never matters because whatever resource is involved in unlocking skills is so plentiful and because devs are just terrified of even challenging a player for even a few moments.

I am really excited about this 1999 mode.

Perhaps the only FPS I'm interested in for this year on current gen console. I skipped the original Bioshock but this game's plot seems even grander.

I'm sort of nervous about Infinite.

Personally, Bioshock was/is the BEST game I've ever played in my 18 year old life. The memories, the general atmosphere, of me playing this in my basement during Spring Break when I was in 8th grade..a time when shit and just life in general was so simple and sweet. It was a great time in my life, and the fact I was playing such an awesome game during that awesome time just makes me cherish Bioshock that much more.

I literally think, that when I'm grey and bald, and 92 years old lying on my death bed, I'll still remember my 14 year old self, chilling on my basement couch with all the lights turned off, become so inspired by the city of Rapture, and the general narrative and atmosphere of Rapture.

I love Bioshock so, so, mcuh.

Honestly, I thought Bioshock 2 was trash. Not because it was a bad game per-say. It was in all honestly a great game..but it just didn't have that same Atmosphere that Rapture had. It just felt off, consistently. It bugged me alot. It didn't feel like Ken Levines Rapture, but someone elses, and I just couldn't connect in that regard.

Plus, while the narrative was more "solid"..I couldn't help but prefer Ryan over Lamb, and the whole "would you kindly" twist as well.

If it wasn't called Bioshock 2, but rather a new ip of sorts I would've loved it more.

So..regardless, obviously Infinite has ALOT to live up to.

It's Ken Levine, and I honestly consider him as one of the best game developers of all time. I love him to death, and honestly think that there is ever a video game developer hall of fame, he should be first ballot.

But I'm still nervous. I'm afraid of being let down..I'm afraid of not being inspired by Columbia the same way I was by Rapture...that said I do like what I'm seeing of Columbia..but still.

I kind of miss Raptures dark, bleak, moody atmosphere..and from what I've seen of Columbia, alot of the horror seems to be gone..and the latest trailers just put me off. I know it's trying to appeal to the "mass ea gamer", so obviously there going to try to make it look all cool and dude bro ish, but it just depletes the hype rather than inflate it.

Long post...pointless post, just venting here lol.

Regardless, can't wait. Nervous though...

I like you.

But we have to play the wait and see approached right now. Unfortunately they are trying to appeal to that mass demographic, they don't need to focus on us as much.
2K knows they don't need to grab our attention, we are reading previews and dissecting trailers already.

They have been consistently showing segments from the beginning of the game. The game could change to a darker, cramped, more atmospheric later on.
This is the same guy who did BioShock and System Shock 2 after all.

How does this setting make the game look dude bro-ish?

Its colorful, its full of whimsical details, Elizabeth alone seems to be full of life as a character.

Or am I missing something?

I don't get why it has to to be bleak and horror. This isn't rapture, it's an entirely new setting. It's already atmospheric to me, and personally I find dark and cramped feeling of Rapture to be played out. I will be severely disappointed if Columbia is Rapture 2.0.

Anything bright is automatically dude bro it seems.

True. I have faith. I trust Ken more than anymore..his track record speaks for itself.

I'm just afraid that it won't click on all cylinders. I remember before purchasing Biohsock, just watching all the gameplay walkthroughs (on g4tv on demand on timewarner cable..it doesn't exist anymore of course), and all the trailers how much it gave me chills. Every morning before hitting school I would watch it, and just become absorbed by the atmosphere of Rapture, just by a short 10 minute walkthroughs.

I honestly can't say the same about Columbia so far.

I was discussing the recent batch of trailers. There very actiony-hollywood esque and seems very honed on selling this game to the dude bro market it seems.

The game itself looks about as risky as it gets in the gaming industry nowadays.

Now I have to read just what the fuck 1999 mode is.....

edit: : / well that article with Levine didn't really explain it well IMO but the idea behind it sounded good. Sounds like a 2nd playthrough kind of thing. I don't want it messing with my first experience with the game.

I remember playing Deus-ex and specking my character poorly. I limped through the whole submarine section with one arm, no legs and a stun stick. It was kind of fun to figure out just how the hell I could pull it off since I had saved over the older saves. If it's like that then it could be awesome.
