I even saw an ad for it on t.v today. I did some googling, and it seems like a completely normal thing. I asked my sister and her friends, and she said there are tons of products for men and even in stores now for skin bleaching.

I just cannot comprehend how this is allowed?

Here is an ad from India, starring Shahrukh Khan - he is the king of Bollywood.

The hell?

The prophecy of faceless has come true!

It's a seemingly popular thing to do among celebrities, should regular dark folk start doing it more?

That in addition to some facial surgery (nose, lips, etc) and wearing proper attire could go a long way towards softening the appearance of danger and sense of fear in others. agree? disagree?

Shahrukh Khan isn't even handsome. I would rather fuck the dark skin guy if I had to flip a coin.

I think there's some sort of irony hidden in the fact that it's called "fairness cream" but I just can't quite word the joke correctly.

It's called having a choice. If I want to lighten my skin, I can. Now with that in mind, some of these products have questionable advertising methods.

These are usually for people who want to have a more even skin tone. As a teen I would often use them to lighten areas on my face that were made darker due to scarring from acne.

The hell?

Why shouldn't it be allowed?

Lots of women around here try to look as orange as possible via fake tan.

They just end up looking like Oompa Loompa strippers.

I dunno about regular people using it, but I can understand people with vitiligo using it - even if it looks worse afterward. I feel so bad for people with dark skin who have it.

Why is tanning allowed, then? We can darken our skin, no problem, but if we lighten it.... racist?

That being said, most of the countries where skin whitening are sold do have an undercurrent of racism to the practice (India, Korea, etc).

Why not, it's their body to do whatever they want with it?

On one hand, I agree with this.

On the other, a significant portion of the people engaging in this behavior aren't doing so because they're making rational independent choices, but because of a deep seeded lack of self esteem perpetuated by a white culture that sees lighter skin as more beautiful and darker or black skin as bad or ugly.

I still think it should be allowed, mind you. I just see how it perpetuates Eurocentric standards of beauty. I'd look for ways to move culture away from a Eurocentric standard of beauty generally rather than target this behavior specifically.

because those lightening creams and cake soap permanently fuck up your skin. You think Sammy Sosa will ever look how he did before from using cake soap? No way. Also those place that sell the shit always have an underlying message of being more eurocentric. It's not like the tanning places you go to have an underlying message to make you look more black.

Yup. Skin bleaching is often an expression of self-loathing and indirect endorsement of white, eurocentric beauty and superiority. My feeling towards it is somewhere between shameful and embarrassing.

Avatar quote.

One of the best singers and most successful artist in pop music, Beyonce Knowles, has often been accused of bleaching her skin to appear lighter. While we will never really know if it is true or not, I own all of her albums and have noticed some changes in her skin tone. It could be make up, or just her tanning... but I'll let you guys judge for yourself.

I think she is gorgeous regardless, though.

Um, and tanning doesn't?

so you're telling me someone that tans will always look dark and not look "off' like in the pictures above? if they suddenly stop tanning they'll always have that look? I know, you know that's not true.

This is my take, also it's really depressing seeing people go from beautiful and dark skinned to some weird shade and just wrong.

Amerie has also done more to herself =/.

No, they just get melanoma and sunspots. Much better right?

I'm not sure you can just attribute this to only Caucasian dominance. A lot of cultures for centuries have prized lighter skin.

They may go back to normal but it doesn't mean that have healthy skin. Skin gets damaged, yo.
