early 2013 (still with 4GB Ram):

There are 2 main differences:

- The 4 cores have been “upgraded” to 8 cores (this time as we know they are Jaguar cores instead Steamroller)

- RAM amount is still the same (4 GB, this change is very recent)

- Almost all the speeds are “downgraded”.

So now we have:

- “Garlic” bus between GPU and Memory (176 GB/s)

- “Onion” buses between GPU and Memory through CPU (10 GB/s shared)

- CPU bus between CPU and Memory (less than 20 GB/s). The only one apparently untouched.

One thing to note is that losing 16GB/sec on the bandwidth front may not make much of a difference. The GPU is based on Pitcairn which on PC has an internal memory bandwidth of 153.6GB/sec (for both models). Given the CPU will use less than 20GB/sec that still leaves around 2-3GB/sec surplus, part of which may be used by the 3D camera.

So in the end the downgrade may not be detrimental to the performance when compared with the retail version of Pitcairn models.

Plus, the evolution does include 2x the original RAM which would help it in the long run.

I'm still stunned by dat 8 GB GDDR5. :-O

I think it was teasing insider info without actually revealing it (or didn't do it quickly enough and lost the opportunity to do so).
I was working in the hospital at the time, and after I got done with the patient, BANNED. -_- It's ok I've learned my lesson though :). I'd rather STFU now and be alive, than a dead bird.

Far as I know, the ram is GDDR5 which is slower than what DDR5 will be whenever it comes out. We'll have to see how DDR4 is later this year to get an idea.

I can't tell if this is a joke post. DDR5 isn't a thing (yet) and DDR4 is not faster than DDR3, it just has the potential to go to higher clock speeds.

Kind of interesting although there isn't much in the way of useful info.

Also, people need to stop letting hardware engineers name things.

So the design went pretty much marginally changed since 2011? Disappointment-ton.

Past generations had way crazier design stages. :(

This wasn't that interesting at ALL. I'm not buying a PS4 because of this.

So it was never 2GB RAM? Or if it was then it was wayyyyy early in development.

There was an option for 2 GB of RAM initially. I've been told this by a variety of people. The initial VG leaks document they had even specified 2 GB. We were all mega excited when 4 was announced, but 8 was something no one saw coming.

Thuway is legit. Did not deserve the temp ban. Glad he's back!

Agree. Always thought he conducted himself in terms of giving out what he'd knew. Unless I missed something I thought his ban was a tad unfair.

EDIT

Bishoptl didn't like that he was playing the Insider card.
I hope thuway can reveal more without getting in trouble.

Must have missed this as he wasn't exactly holding everything back. Fair enough if that was the case though.

Yup, both you and BruceLee said it wasn't happening. Sony kept that card not close to but rather in their chest.

After the announcement, I realised how clueless most journalists were as to its significance. Plus, it has now become highly annoying that some of them keep referring to the RAM as DDR5. I loved what Mark Rein of Epic told Geoff Keighly post unveil; only developers would truly understand the significance of this upgrade.

Its to be noted that the PS2 and PS3 had several major design steps, IIRC, before their final stage.

The PS2 at one point had at least one additional CPU, and there were rumors that Hitachi had a hand in the PS2 development at one point as well, betraying their former association with Sega's Dreamcast. The early rumors of it being a connected machine with HD and ethernet kind of did pan out, but those accessories weren't included as early specs suggested. The early specs even had some sort of high speed PC-like expansion port (or there were on initial models? Google search is unclear)

The PS3 had several, with rumors of there being a super CELL, two CELLs, and other various configs. It was rumored to have a TV tuner/recording ability, Ethernet hub, and all sorts of misandry. It was a computer, a HTPC, a gaming console, and an interconnected home device, and when Sony first presented it they mentioned being able to control home devices and other crazy bull.

This was relatively tame.

memory bus going from 192GB/s to 176GB/s.... sounds like a switch from Nvidia Kepler to AMD Pitcairn.

I thought the reason there was a bandwidth downgrade from 192GB/s to 176GB/s was because of the switch to higher density chips (4->8) that aren't available at that much bandwidth.

That's what I remember the Hynix PDF was showing, anyway.

It's possible they dropped to the lower bandwidth (and so I imagine cheaper) chips before they decided to go with the 8GB.
Yeah. I was just wondering out loud.
