Female soldiers will not be playable in Battlefield 4's multiplayer or singleplayer

One of the major points from the Chinese BF4 rumors is now dead

"I can already now say that you won't be able to play [as a] female in multiplayer," creative director Lars Gustavsson told VideoGamer.com during Battlefield 4's reveal event last night.

So why hasn’t DICE opted to include playable female soldiers in Battlefield 4?

"Trust me, there are a million things I would like to do," continues Gustavsson, "it's just that you can’t pick them all.

"I have the deepest respect for the men and the women who choose to do military service. It's not that anyone is better or worse. It's definitely a valid question that we asked ourselves."

This time around, everything from direction to actors, to how we built the engine to deliver the human experience and connection to these digital actors, we’ve also chosen to go for one main character that you play, and with that, that is not a woman, as you might have noticed.

No playable female character in single player either

"The geopolitics is more of a backdrop to what happens, it’s more [about] you and your group, and we chose to pick a man for it. It seemed to suit the story."

A mod can edit the title if they want to mention that female character won't be playable in single or multiplayer.

Seems like we don't have a real reason outside of "look bro we just can't do it!"
It's probably partially a matter of getting animations in, though it's possible the target audience would react badly to them being there at all.

I wouldn't doubt if something was lost in translation regarding those leaks and the game including a main female character rather then a playable female character.

"Some of my best friends are women!"

That is one of the weakest PR-speak blurbs I've seen in a while.

Dodged the question completely, but you gotta remember that most shooters don't feature female multiplayer characters, so its not just battlefield 4 that deserves criticism.

It's like they said "Not to be sexist, but..." and didn't even bother finishing the sentence.
Makes me wonder if it really was just focus testing or management going "no you can't do that at all, keep all characters male for multiplayer."

It's why I'd suspect focus testing or upper management, at this point it's so ingrained that you "don't do it" in more realistic shooters that they probably actively try to stomp it out in fear of alienating players. Which sounds ridiculous but they seem to be doing a lot of ridiculous things out of this fear anymore.

In full gear the female would look just like the male, just with a smaller frame. I dont think they want to account for different size characters.

Medal of Honor went through this with being able to play as the Taliban. Bad publicity from non-gamers. You think the same people aren't going to go apeshit over shooting a female avatar, or having a woman's voice shouting about getting her shit pushed in over here? I can't blame them for dropping it, even if I think it's personally cowardly.

Why? It would be very easy for them to do it, and MP should strive on choice.

They can't do all the things. They had a million things they wanted to do! Some of their best friends are even woman and they have deep respect for lady soldiers.

This is me holding back but it's pretty much what they said.

It'll be bad publicity. Feminists will label the game as a woman killing simulator and try to get it banned in as many countries as possible.

so in single player you can play as female soldier?

Nope

"When it comes to single-player, [in Battlefield 3] you shuffled around numerous characters as you played and it was more about the geopolitical events. This time around, everything from direction to actors, to how we built the engine to deliver the human experience and connection to these digital actors, we’ve also chosen to go for one main character that you play, and with that, that is not a woman, as you might have noticed.

Or there just isn't enough time or resources.

I know feminism is the hip thing in games right now, but i doubt everyone at dice is misogynist or whatever. Maybe they have higher priorities than this.

Just for my own knowledge, does anybody know the ratio of men to women on the frontline units for the U.S. army?

Probably. "WHEN'S THE LAST TIME YOU SAW A FEMALE SOLIDER IN COD?" was most likely the subject of the email.

Maybe it's for the best. I can't imagine anyone choosing to use a female and having an easy time online, regardless of irl gender.

Though I do think we should have female characters in MP, I won't deny I'm disturbed with the very thought of what some of the more twisted or gutter minded online players would do with female characters in game.

It's pretty damn small. Most women have roles outside of combat. Regardless, DICE does need to set a good example. It's a video game. Unlike real life, there are no barriers. Too many shooters have already done this with more restrictions (financially and technically) for it not be normal.

If you want to accuse DICE of being sexist, you'll have to explain Mirror's Edge first.

Full disclosure before detective-GAF kicks me: I work there.

Last military shooter I played where you could make a female character was Rainbow Six Vegas. So this isn't exactly a novel concept.
