Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

So I got though half of that ILM video when it sounded like pretty much everyone had completed Bioshock, so I got my keys, walked to the nearest Redbox, and rented the game since SOME members of the crew are bad at keeping spoilers.

Let tomorrow be a late bombcast...

Going by the logic of some people, it's already late.

Remember when GB made a big deal about if they had advertising it was going to be respectful and not crap?

I have to watch the same GAMESPOT GAMING MEMES OF HISTORY ad for 15 seconds before *every* video. Ugh.

CBSi really wants you to know the origin of the funny Internet jokes.

Yes, and thank God someone does! Lest we forget keyboard cat.

On the subject of QL/ER - Vinny + * = Winner.

Vinny puts the epic in Klepek.
Vinny puts the rad in Brad.
Vinny puts the eff in Jeff.

Remember how whiskey media was shut down and was paying staff like Rorie slightly above minimum wage?

That ad philosophy was dumb. Gotta shill e sports and shit to keep the money rolling in.

I don't remember that but I've only been paying attention to the site for 6 months or so. Maybe you could spend the enormous amount of $30 a year (during their holiday specials) and not have to put up with ads at all?

Since it is the weekend, i have creepy question:

Does Brad has a driver's license, or does he know how to drive? I was listening to an old bombcast from '09 and Jeff mentioned that Brad doesn't have a car. I know Brad takes public transit a lot, and being in a busy and small city, that makes sense, but I wonder if he still doesn't own a car. And, if he doesn't own a car, I wonder if he ever got his license.

I've never owned a car and I've never learned how to drive, exactly because of the reasons you mentioned. I'm also 31.

Does that fulfill your weird car-license fetiche or does it have to be Brad's information? :D

i never knew the deeets on that, any where i can read up more?

I remember during the days after Whiskey shut when Rorie was talking about being caught of guard by the whole thing and no one warning him about it and mentioned that he was only getting paid about 20k a year.

Was he really not told? He was working with his friends so that seems too fucked up to be true.

I hope Drew and Alexis do another 24 hour stream.

Drew's quiet breaking point
Alexis's sweating more and more as the hours go by
And Alexis's sister does a better job of reading chat than everyone else.

Yeah, it definitely seems there was those who were 'in the know' and those who weren't, but that's business really. When the sale was announced, there was a pretty big discrepancy between the month Jeff said (during the Chilli video) they found out about WM looking for buyers, and the month Will (from Tested) said they found out - yet they were supposed to have the same standing within the company as the two WM editorial co-leads.

Rorie seemed to have got pretty screwed at WM. Prior to the sale, he worked day and night on his own keeping Screened fresh, yet nobody had a quiet word to let him know what was happening?

I always thought it was funny hearing Jeff talk about the buyout and how they where in talks with CBSi as far back as late 2011 and on the other hand you had Will Smith talking about how if they had any idea they where going to be sold they would not have done the lego build off which happened the month prier.

From the sounds of things everything sort of happened super last minute though. Things where probably "hush hush" and only for those in the know for a long time then something happened a week or two before we found out and everyone scrambled.

Thats business though. Jeff was the editorial guy for whiskey so he probably got a sweat deal out of it though. No shocker dude got a new car not long after the buyout.

Speaking of.... The whiskey wiki tech and most of the top men went with to the company that bought tested. Has that company ever done anything with it and launched new sites on that web platform?

I remember them saying that the engineers launched a whole website since they were bought (can't remember if it was before or after the Tested redesign).

Looking at the Berman Braun website, they have a site (well a youtube channel really) called "Tasted" hahaha.

was reading the news and saw this. Had to look real close. I never knew that Ryan was a Russian crimelord in Murmansk.

I know this has been asked and probably answered before, but is there an audio-only version of the GDC after hours part 02?

I'm at work and cant exactly search through the thread right now. I got the video streaming in the background but it keeps freezing. Also I kinda need to be able to pause it at-the-ready without alt-tabbing to the GB page every time.

edit:

thank you, sir. just had to find the right thing to "ctrl+f" on the page

Yeah, that whole thing stank. I'm the one who brought up the discrepancy with Will on the Tested forum when the sale was announced. He dismissed it as conspiracy theory nonsense, which maybe it was, but the timing was odd. Who appeals for membership subscriptions to buy Lego sets? Especially after Jeff said they knew about the sale? Blatant attempt at making the site look more attractive to potential buyers IMO.

Like the day before the sale was announced Matt was on twitter apologizing for not doing a Behind the Screened Door because all the podcast equipment was missing

If that's true, then that's pretty fucked up (unless the dude was straight up not paying attention to literally anything sent his way).

Also, it's pretty messed up how he was at GameSpy for like 2 months before the fucking thing was shut down, talk about bad luck.

I find it hard to believe Rorie was only making 20k. That's like...what.

Seems crazy low, but (first article I found) http://www.gamesradar.com/ask-gr-anything-how-much-do-game-journalists-earn/ , so I could see a small non-gaming website making even less

When working for a website, there seem to be three different income brackets. For starting employees on the lowest rung, the average is around $32,000 (associate editor, assistant editor). More senior employees (senior editor, managing editor) can later hope to move up to around $50,000. While we weren't able to get an online editor in chief to respond, we expect there’s a similar bump.

Stuff like that does make me wonder why anyone would want to be a game journalist though, the chances of you working on an actual interesting website compared to just writing up PR releases for IGN or whoever are so low, and the pay sucks, and you don't get any career advancement. It's not even a 'following your dream' thing like game development

I think it was more like the deal happened really quickly. They sort of did it, packed up and left, Alex quit, and Rorie was left with a site no one wanted to buy. I feel sad for him because he really is a good writer and an entertaining guy. He added a lot of personality to the Whiskey Media Hour. Then getting Gamespy's job just for it to shut down! Damn.

I'm also pretty sure he rejected joining GB. Though I might be wrong.

I want to know what the discrepancy between how much Rorie was paid and how much say Brad was paid for instance. I doubt I could find out though.

It seems like they proper fucked that guy over. Like he came into work one day and they had emptied his office kind of screwed.

Ahaha that Slender quicklook was awesome.

I think Ryan was crying at some point.

Next time someone does a bet with the guys, make Ryan/Patrick doing an ER of The Arrival part of the wager.

Hey guys it's good to be back I miss---

why are we talking about peoples' salaries

Because this is the internet. We must know these things:

  • Does Brad own a car? Does he even know how to drive?
  • Are Jeff and Carrie a thing? Were they a thing back in gamespot days? God I hope Jeff is getting laid.
  • Why is Ryan Fianceé so good to him? I wonder what he did to swoon her.
  • How come all of Rorie's friends hate him? They were clearly mocking him behind his back and plotting his destruction.

Among others.
