[RUMOR] Paul Thurrott: Xbox 720 is expensive: $500 or $300 for sub model, 5/21 Unveil

$500? This tells me Microsoft probably didn't cheap out on the hardware, think it'll be very close to PS4 like Ubisoft said but PS4 might be $50-100 cheaper.

I don't get how don't have negative feelings about at least some of Durango's rumored "features".

Of course I have negative feelings about both machines. But at the end of the day I prefer MS multiplayer based approach to thier games, and im prepared to overlook other negatives because of this? I'm assuming they will introduce a new multiplayer based IP next gen, which will no doubt sell me the machine.

I didn't realize neo-gaffe was such a massive circle jerk. I can't believe some of the conclusions you guys have reached. Especially considering that one company hasn't even announced their product and second the company that has shown console hasn't even announced a price. But immediately everyone is heralding the end of Microsoft and ps4 championing the next generation. Not to mention PlayStation hasn't even announced their final strategy with their online service. The only thing that they have said is that most of the sharing functions and it online features that they are showing in the next console may not even be finalized once it's released.

Sounds like the PS3 all over again. They're seemingly making so many mistakes. Hubris like crazy.

Also, 5/21 unveil? Really? Cutting it very close to E3. Why are they waiting so damn long? I feel like PS4 is gaining a ton of momentum, while MS stays silent about their new box. Then again, maybe it'll have more buzz going into E3? who knows.

I'm the least fanboy in this thread son. You have people insulting gamers for buying Live, for playing Halo and I'm the fanboy? I'm merely stating my preferences.

Preferring a console over another is totally fine and dandy, but wanting a console to succeed over another is treading fanboyism. Every thread I've seen you in you've come to MS defense or made snarky comments about Sony, I don't understand the logic, can your brain not process the idea of two consoles being good or enjoyable?

I am reading all your posts with Clay Davis voice and I'm loving it.

Let’s not let one ill-conceived comment ruin what’s going to be an awesome year for Xbox. And yes, it really is going to be awesome.
I remain positive and happy. You guys aren't dragging me down.

No but what I mean is, what if any PC title that has Windows 8 compatible on it, you can just pop it in and install on your Xbox 3.

Most of the games I buy for PC are downloads. The few retail discs I've bought usually require Steamworks or Origin anyway. Hard to believe that Microsoft would support either of those marketplaces on the Xbox.

Well one of the positives we were holding onto was that 720 would be cheap.

>.>

In fact, that was used on the pro side just a couple days ago...

People were bumping the PS4 wouldn't be backwards compatible to justify Microsoft. Now we have another rumor suggesting it will not have BC. Seriously this is humorous.

If MS is pricing this at 500 I would assume that they have big big features in it and comparable or better specs than ps4.

That always online thing I hope isn't true though...

honestly, anyone who thinks sony wont come up with a tier system ala xbl is just delusional. ps+ always seemed like a test run to me. wouldnt be surprised if that gaikai bs is only available for top tier subscribers.

I think the Kinect, or something like it, can be revolutionary for sports titles. The bowling in Kinect Sports is a small window of what could be. Years from now, I would love to see a game where we can actually fight Ali or Tyson. Golf, Tennis, Baseball could be replicated almost exactly. I don't think we're too far from that. That's why I don't mind giving technology like this a chance.

If I want to actually bowl or play tennis or baseball, or golf, wouldn't I just go out to do this? The whole point of videogames is that I can just press a stupid button and it does it for me.

I know PS4 is gonna disappoint me with a "not so funny" surprise, but Durango really feels like the oppiste of what I want to buy.

No reason to insult anyone that is for sure. I believe many people here would buy a PS4 even if it had all the same crap the 720 is rumored to have.

Jack Tretton already told us PS4 will not be another 599 so that is pretty telling that it will probably be around 450-500 depending if they want to take a hit.

And most of these rumors will be true, it is clear as day at this point. And when going by the rumours I cannot see MS outselling Sony unless they get another expanded audience Wii style in the US with their yet to be unannounced plans.

I want it to succeed just because of how delicious the irony would be.

There is already some pretty fantastic melt downs in this thread and it's only rumor.

I wasn't here for the PS3/360 generation reveal but if this is a taste of what is to come... NeoGAF will be more entertaining than E3 itself this year. Amazing.

That's fine as long as online P2P gaming is free, which it always should have been

Let it go guys, The Crusty Juggler is your typical console warrior guy who acts like he has shares in the company or works for them. Rumours of DRM, weaker than PS4, Kinect Required, $500 and etc, but still hopes it sells more than PS4. I personally want the console that is priced right, isn't anti consumer, powerful and etc to succeed. If we take what is announced for PS4 and the rumours for Durango, majority of gamers would want PS4 to succeed, unless your a fanboy or a die hard Halo/Forza fan,

Because neoGAF is not a massive circle jerk, that's why you didn't realize it.

The problem for your nonsense is that we didn't reach some 'conclusions', there have been a neverending stream of rumours from very reliable sources that have echoed a litany of similar features all of which are extremely negative on average for the consumer. As neoGAF is a community filled with consumers, it's no surprise why the majority would react harshly.

As for anyone 'heralding the end of Microsoft', I'm a consumer. 360 was my favorite console until Microsoft released that Kinect abomination. Then I just disliked all the consoles. But there's no doubt PS4 is far more exciting as a consumer than the new Xbox sounds to be, and this is not 'jumping to conclusions' it's simply evaluating what we know about PS4 versus what we do know about Durango and then combing through the most reliable rumours we have.

PS4 has been designed so far in every way to be extremely friendly for developers, indies, consumers. There has genuinely not been a single shred of negative news about the system except maybe that their initial reveal could have used more exciting videogames, which most of us know we'll see at E3.

And why wouldn't we be excited for PS4? it's a gamers dream machine.

The only thing that they have said is that most of the sharing functions and it online features that they are showing in the next console may not even be finalized once it's released.

But that's not all they have said. JUST from the initial reveal we got more news than that ->

+ Words from virtually every developer on the planet about the massive change in philosophy toward helping devs and having a friendly, easy development environment.
+ Words from any Indie that has bothered to comment about how great PS4's indie philosophy is in every conceivable way, with considerable detail about why it's so great
+ Words about how massively powerful the system is going to be, and what it's potential is now considering its unprecedented amount of super fast RAM.
+ Words about the SHARE button, which is one of those innovations that genuinely have huge implications for games without being a pointless gimmick.
+ Details about every aspect of the controller, from its touch pad and color indicators.
+ Details about the new PlayStation store and the various ways the new interface will be changing the game
+ Details about the new downloading schemes: start playing games as soon as you start a download.
+ Details about the new online infrastructure and what it will mean for games
+ Details from weird creepy Crash Bandicoot guy about the extensive change in approach toward courting anyone who wants to make anything on PS4.

In short, we got a plethora of information that gave us a massive idea about exactly where Sony was going with PS4.

I'd only agree with you that the current slate of game announcements was rather unimpressive (except that Drive Club game), but I hardly expected them to reveal very many of those before E3, which will be their big show. The important thing was understanding the philosophy behind the system, who is supporting it and what their outlook is, and we got all of that with the PS4 unveil.

??? No he is talking about a system that does exist and he has some factual insider knowledge about, rather than the sensationalist crap all the media has been foisting. As he said, no one except a very few insiders have actually seen the new Xbox. All the people that have seen it, from developers to Gamestop, say it is an extremely good system. The only people who hate it are those with no real information.
Can you please tell us which of the rumors are facts and which ones aren't?

From everything that I've heard rumored about with the next MS console, I'm thinking they should go with the name:

XBox Hubris

It still has that "techy" ring too!

I hope people like you are just a few minority because I'm starting to be worried. I don't like what MS tryng to do (from the lastest rumours), is something just unacceptable from my mind & furthermore not sound good for my pocket.

We aren't, all the numbers from this gen prove it. The mass market is online connected, has no problem with DLC, and is not worried about the same things as the GAF crowd. Microsoft has done their research, they know such a model will be successful. They also know not to listen to the vocal enthusiast because they don't represent anything but a microscopic part of the market. Things that GAF tends to love often sell horribly and are basically financial disasters. Things GAF hates tend to sell 10+ million copies and are cultural icons. The only valid conclusion is ignore the loud enthusiast. Microsoft is going to try it, Sony is going the opposite way, we will know who was right in 5 years or so.

There is preference and then there is hoping a console sells more even though said console would be the most anticinsumer and closed in history.

It is only a problem for a tiny portion of the market. If it isn't a problem for me why would I change my preference because a few million people don't like it when the other 100 million people in the market don't care?

Considering what E3 has become, that's a pretty low bar. I'd say it's more like a ditch, really.
But, yeah, this thread is pretty good.

I'd do a generalisation for you but I've no idea who you are.

That $599 pricing. The Cirque du Soleil show. Man. Hells. The Konami event was priceless. With all the current rumors going on about now, this year E3 should be pretty damn good here on GAF.

Crystal ball?

I'm thinking at least some part of these rumours are leaked by MS themselves. They're testing the water basically. How people react. It's better to get this negative publicity before they reveal then after the reveal.

I'm wondering as well whether they have different machines, one that supports always online, and one that doesn't. If the negative reception looks like it will affect them, then they just switch to the spec that doesn't support this feature.

That's a fucking DANGEROUS way of doing things. You run the risk of poisoning the well and setting a perception in the consumer zeitgeist that no amount of good press after the fact will shake.

$500 sounds right for the 'premium' (read: bigger HDD) next-gen models. I don't think there will be a $300 model, just $400.

Crystal ball?

There are way too many sources at this point. There is no way this hasn't at least been true very recently and I do not expect them to change it at this point.

It was the same way with PS4 rumours. At one point it all became clear what the basic machine was with the sole exeption of 8GB of ram and even that we had few hints at.
