[RUMOR] Paul Thurrott: Xbox 720 is expensive: $500 or $300 for sub model, 5/21 Unveil

From the likes of GAF and Reddit. The vast majority of Xbox owners haven't heard any of the FUD, or perhaps know that some guy was a jerk on Twitter.

I'm going to assume a fair few gamers know. The story spread everywhere, even to NBC, Yahoo, Huffington Post etc.

A good point, but early adopters are who sell the system to the masses. It's not looking good that the our sentiment is so negative with no official reveal yet.

Microsoft throwing a billion dollars into a carpet-bombing ad campaign will make the masses forget, and maybe even some of the hardcore who would comprise the early adopters.

Apparently, creating polarizing products that no one wants is the new thing at Microsoft - Windows 8, Windows Phone, Surface RT and Pro. I wonder how the 720 will fair. Do you see the pattern?

"The problem Microsoft has has nothing to do with Sony or Nintendo anymore, it's Roku and AppleTV. The market for hardcore video games, the market of people will always buy the next Gears of War game, the next Halo game, the next Call of Duty game, it's fairly finite. It's a decent market, yada yada yada, it's not the market for tablets, it's not the market for smartphones.

This paragraph tells me everything I want to know.

I already have an Apple TV and a gaming PC, and I'm buying a PS4. Fuck off, MS.

Pro-tip: before you try and school someone in geography, read a book or something.

Unless you're from some backward, god forsake country that groups Asia and Europe into one, there are seven continents. Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia.

So the guy was right. South Africa is part of Europe.

To be fair the 7 continents count is just as arbitrary as any other one and afaik depending on how you "count" any number from 4 to 7 continents is possible (with N/S America sometimes counting as one, sometimes as two, Europe/Asia/Africa sometimes one, sometimes two, sometimes three, Antarctica sometimes one, sometimes not at all etc.).
I'd say the only thing that everybody agrees with is that Australia/Oceania is a continent on its own.

Why this thread suddenly became about teaching basic geography to someone who thinks Africa is in Europe. What :lol

@shinra: From what I've gathered, he's very reliable on Microsoft stuff, but creamhackered (supposudely Tom Warren from Verge) said that he said wrong things about Stingray's infos and pricing. At first I thought the pricing part was referring to Durango, but now I wonder if he were referring still to Stingray, actually.

Xbox treats the people who sign up for there $99 Xbox sub model like 2nd class citizens. They don't think of you ass a full gold member, so you can't get gold status on Xbox rewards, and some other shit.

This has failed time and time again though. Marketing money doesn't create sales.

They threw a Billion+ at marketing Windows 8 too.

And they threw 500 million at Kinect, which was a success.

The Xbox is a powerful brand. Microsoft and Windows may no longer be, but that really isn't indicative of what the Xbox - which they have very carefully guarded from the rest of Microsoft's branding and image - can do.

I'm not saying I personally believe that, but that's probably what Microsoft is betting on.

I see why in USA many people knows nothing about geography.

Seven continents?
"Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Antarctica, Europe, and Australia".

America is ONLY ONE, period. And... what about Central America, then?

Germany, France, Brazil, South Africa, Australia.
I thought this seemed right. But I just investigated this "Germany" you keep bringing up.

The two most famous animals from that "country" are Knut the polar bear and Paul the octopus.

Those don't live in Europe. One of them doesn't even live on a continent. It lives in the part that isn't a continent!
You tried to pull a fast one on me but I saw through your shenanigans.

The idea was a seller, the tech was broken. The idea behind the next Xbox appears to be Kinect 2.0 and Always Online.
Kinect stopped selling a year after release. 1.0 is dead.

You sure about this?

Besides, it's not like they're going to be selling the 720 on the idea of "ANTI-CONSUMER FEATURES!"

It's just that they're going to downplay those and emphasize the "ideas"/features the masses want - Halo, CoD, and Kinect shit - and bombard you with that for months, so that even people with reservations go over the tipping point into becoming buyers.

Interesting.

Either Kinect 2.0 is very expensive, there really are two APUs in the box (lol), or some amount of the above and they're also simply trying to gouge early adopters for profit.

I guess if you can only make a few million units to sell worldwide at launch anyway, and you think that you can still sell them at ~$500 you may as well.

Thanks for reaffirming my decision to upgrade my PC or go PS4 next gen Microsoft.

No offense, but it is great that this guy has sources and the info , and the info is great but he obviously knows nothing about gaming or the gaming market.
Cool that Nextbox is a Win8 device for syncing.

Should have gone to specsavers. Read over the document properly. There's a tablet device and then a base unit.

yeah, 2.5" SCSI 10K drive isnt going anywhere near mass market device. Not even sure if anyone does 2.5" SCSI drives anymore? They are used in servers and some old school Macs long time ago. It is not something you put into gaming consoles.

Read up on your technology.

If any good comes from this, it'll be Balmer finally being fired, so there's that.

Xbox 360 is still topping the NPD chart every month and has done since Kinect launched. It is no coincidence, even if the standalone Kinect isn't selling anymore.

I agree, my 72 year old mother told me about getting a Kinect without even knowing if I had an Xbox at home...

She doesn't have a clue about windows, xbox, or anything... but she's the kind of demographic that gets caught in that kind of marketing...

When I was young she hatted videogames (and to some extent, she still does), and now she tells me what to buy? I'd say that's a very compelling marketing campaign...

They threw a Billion+ at marketing Windows 8 too.

$100m on Bing when it was re-branded/launched as well.

Just shows that throwing money at a product that's clearly, obviously inferior to its main competitor doesn't guarantee market-share or success. In Bing's case, it's Google, with Win 8, it's main rival is Win 7. With the Xbox, they're going to have a real fight against (by all account) the more powerful, more attractive, more open PS4.

Did someone up above just Call Australia part of Europe????

Do you mean Austria???

Australia is a continent unto itself. You know the place Crocodille Dundee and Yahoo Serious comes from...

Wow...
Hmmm dya not think hat might have been sarcasm? Perhaps? No?

I don't buy it. There's something amiss here. Otherwise the third console curse is true!

Third console curse?

Let's see here...

Nintendo... N64. Yeah, many mistakes.

Sony.... PS3. Many mistakes.

Atari... 7200? Didn't the 5400 screw them first? Or whatever it was called?

Sega... Saturn. Agree here. People say the Dreamcast killed Sega. It was the Saturn. Such a clusterfuck for them.

Yeah no way Sony gets to 300. I'm guessing the price will the only downer. another 499 system with PS3 selling for 199 as there cheap option. and I can believe it, MS believes what they have to offer with Kinect and all the online media stuff will be worth it.

I don't think so RE PS4 price. You have to remember we are talking about a launch in six months time, not tomorrow.

I think there is credence to the opinion that the Xbox Next will be the more expensive of the two. In the box you have:

Kinect 2.0
Windows 8
1 TB hard-drive
Xbox 3.0 with full DVR capabilities.

And just look at the cost of the Surface Pro to get an idea of a comparable price of a system that runs a full Windows 8 os = $900 iirc.

Not so hard to see the Xbox Next premium going for $499.

These rumours are getting so bad now I am having trouble believing it. Next one will be the Kinect detaches itself and kicks you in the balls while you sleep.

I really dont care much about disc-based backwards compatibility because i really dont play older titles outside of the xbox live marketplace.

with that said... microsoft might have just lost me as a customer if the following occurs:

- No compatibility with marketplace content on the newer system
- Needs to constantly be online to function... even with regular single player titles
- Weaker than the PS4.. launch lineup is full of "been there done that" titles.
- Priced at 499.99

Eh, I don't know what your criteria is for a brand to be "powerful" but Microsoft still pulled in $56 billion in gross profit last year. Seems kinda powerful to me.

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=MSFT+Income+Statement&annual
(Granted, Xbox division is included in these profits)

Windows 8 may have been a blunder in the home market, but just about every business PC is running a windows OS.

Yeah, anyone who was expecting Sony and MS to cake-walk their way to dominance this gen was kidding themselves that they wouldn't get bad press for SOMETHING that would kill their hype. We're just waiting for Sony's turn, at this point.

You do realize that the mass market aren't early adopters, right? The Wii was the ONLY time that's ever been true, and the Wii U shows that it isn't easily sustainable.
The hardcore are going to be the only ones interested at launch, and if it flounders at launch, the mass market is going to ask why and have PLENTY of evidence to assist them.

As for mass market messaging, here's some sites that MS shouldn't want this story reaching if it wants to control the mass market message:

NBC News
TIME
Huffington Post (twice)
Forbes
The Consumerist
Canada.com (which is part of Postmedia Network, whose articles are printed in multiple newspapers across Canada)

Just to name a few.

The short version is that Microsoft is trying to make a Wii-like move with Durango. They are hoping the nifty stuff with Kinect 2.0 in every box will get them major media coverage. For example a UI that can run off the camera, or the ability to control movies and such without a remote. All the coverage you mentioned is website stuff, combined I doubt it all has more than a million views. If Microsoft catches major media attention with their whole augmented reality no controller required stuff they can end up on all the major nightly news, morning news, and afternoon talk programs. That could net them exposure and mind share that is basically unheard of. It is that sort of coverage that drove Wii sales, and that is basically what Microsoft wants. They don't want the normal paltry launch year numbers, they want to be the next iPad.

Maybe everybody is right.

From universetoday:

How Many Continents Are There?
The current tectonic plates.
Not everyone on this planet is in agreement as with regards to the total number of continents. So how many continents are there then, according to the disagreeing parties?

Well, in Russia, Eastern Europe and Japan, the people there consider the continents of Europe and Asia as one, known as Eurasia. In other places in the world, North and South America are combined as one American continent while separating Europe and Asia instead. Thus, according to these two views, there should only be 6 continents.

There are even geographical views that prefer the presence of both a Eurasian as well as one American continent. These geographers therefore contend that there should only be 5 continents.

And if you thought that would be the lowest number, think again. There are others still who are more comfortable with a 4-continent view.

Where I come from there are five continents:

America
Asia
Africa
Australia
Europe

So you all ar smart people.

Yes. It sold fucking loads very quickly but hasn't sold much at all since.
Success by all means but the idea/device just didn't hold peoples attention long term.

I'm pretty sure Kinect sold over 20 million. I'll post the accurate numberafter a bit of Googling. It is by no means a failure.

Sold well, but how often is it used by the people who bought it? I received mine as a gift and just today got a free Child of Eden code from a fellow Gaffer and now I need to actually figure out which box it has been in this past 13 months.
